AAFES Food Court

Safe place to grab a bite. Choices are QDOBA MEXICAN FOOD, SLIM CHICKENS, CHARLEYS PHILLY STEAKS, SUBWAY SARKU JAPAN, BOBA + ACAI BUBBLE TEAM & SMOOTHI CAFE, and Starbucks.. Plenty of seating, great atmosphere, and shopping at the AAFES STORES and vendors.

Probably one of the worst Base food courts in the nation, which is a shame since Fort Sam is overall so iconic. Let’s start with Ming. The Chinese food is embarrassing, flavorless and most likely reheated from a frozen bag. The fried rice is dull and the egg rolls don’t have any real seasoning. Panda Express would be a Michelin Star restaurant if it were compared to this. Sarku Japan is just as bad with fried dumplings that are chewy in such a bad way. The chicken teriyaki bento is over sauces and way too salty. It’s connected to Ming so it’s easy to assume they are buying their products from the same Sam’s Club frozen section. Then there’s Charlie’s Philly Steaks which I would avoid if you’re from the east coast. They even have mushrooms in their cheesesteaks and other protein options. This might be a good thing if it tasted amazing, sadly it does not. Qdoba is an interesting choice but let’s be honest here it is not Mexican food and it’s annoying that it claims to be. I can’t really say anything bad about the food itself it’s just not Mexican. More like what an American from the western states would try to claim as Mexican. There are signs throughout the food court encouraging non military to eat there in case they thought they couldn’t but the reality is the food is subpar and not worth the disappointment. Here’s a radical idea, put decent quality food in the court and you will see an improvement in patronage. It’s terrible our service members are forced to have these horrible options thrust upon them. Do better AAFES.

Sawasdee has been in our favorite restaurant rotation for a long time at least 15 years. They have always had a great menu with great lunch options that are generous portions and come with a salad with a great unique dressing that I love. I usually stick to a curry dish but have liked everything I’ve tried. On our most recent trip I tried a special off the white board and was surprised with a three types of curry plate with tempura shrimp. It was very good and way too much food so I was able to have seconds later for dinner! The family that owns the restaurant has always been kind and accommodating and friendly. If you like Thai food give this place a try and support this small business!

If you’re looking for authentic Thai food, Sawasdee Thai Cruise is the place to go! The Papaya Salad is absolutely amazing — just like what you’d get in Thailand. Every dish we tried was full of flavor and tasted truly authentic. The owner and staff were so warm, welcoming, and friendly — they made us feel right at home. The restaurant is also very clean and has a great atmosphere. Highly recommended for anyone craving real Thai food and great service!

Absolutely loved this place! The Thai food was super flavorful and authentic – especially the Pad Thai. You can really taste the fresh ingredients and care in every dish. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the overall vibe of the restaurant was cozy and relaxing. Highly recommend if you're looking for tasty Thai and Asian food!

Tie drinks and quick bites a Here are great! Small family-run location. They are not the quickest but definitely worth the wait for the quality. The Boba drinks are fresh and you will be happy.

Has a variety of flavors to choose from for teas and smoothies and is almost super nice! I love coming here for boba. Also has food options btw.

Friendly staff, prompt service, and hot food. They give you tons of fish and the oysters are huge. My only gripe was I like lots of tartar sauce and the fries portion was small.

Old school folks that like to know you. Friendly & accommodating. No frills, just good food. Great fish sandwiches & the good ice! They are only a walk-in (no drive thru) and have a dining room that is weathered by love. Carne Guisda was kissed by the gods! Sweet Tea with just the right amount of Texas in it.

The food was good. I ate the beef and broccoli lunch combo. I had plenty of rice, but not much beef with the veggies. The sauce was on point. I like the crab ragoons and the egg roll. It wasn’t long of a wait for our order. I didn’t dine in so don’t have much to say about that experience.

Went for lunch plate for $9.50 sesame chicken. Two cars in the lot, thought it was customers, but it was the cook and waitress. I got 5 pieces of chicken.. LOOK AT THE PICTURE!!! NEVER AGAIN....

Amazing food and customer service. Our waiter, was so helpful and suggested we try the edamame and WOW! Loved everything we tried!

If you're in San Antonio, Kuriya at Cherrity Bar is a must-visit! The Japanese-infused food is absolutely phenomenal—every dish is bursting with flavor and creativity. But what truly makes this place special is the meaning behind it. The owner’s dedication to the community shines through in everything they do. Cherrity Bar supports local nonprofits every month and hosts a variety of events and markets, making it a hub for positive energy and connection. The space is incredibly family and pet-friendly, which is a huge bonus, and they offer happy hour every day on both drinks and appetizers. I also love how they support local artists—every other month, the art on the walls is carefully curated, showcasing the talent of San Antonio’s creative community. If you're looking for great food, a welcoming atmosphere, and a place that gives back, Kuriya at Cherrity Bar is the spot!

Great mom and pop shop in a not so busy area. We were going to go to a fancy chain but stumbled upon this little local gem. Lots of menu options and flavors with a fantastic price. Lots of snack options to include fresh fruit and corn just in case the family wants something different 😋. The ice is not snow but more of a medium shred which is great for this heat. Delicious flavors without the artificial flavor or extra sugar rush. A perfect balance. The service is tailored to your needs and they're Lots of topping to fresh upnyour ice. Best part is I got 2 to 3 topping for every family member and still made it out under $10. Lots of free parking and seats if you can handle the heat. But you can also sit in the car if you prefer while you wait or snack on your Delicious treats 😋

Love this place ! Used to come to this place before Covid and like many small businesses it shut down because of Covid but they are back open!! Great atmosphere, great service, great menu, great prices, kid friendly, and best of all great food/snacks !! Definitely will be coming back now that we know it’s open again! Cute little spot 🥰

Delicious food, fast service and friendly staff. The cinammon roll French toast was delicious! The overall price seemed high but each of our meals was a good 2 meals, so overall it was great.

It’s the 3rd time, 3rd strike and they are out!! Gave it 3 tries, they failed all 3 times, even after us mentioning what the problem was the previous visit. Which are the following; their hash browns were half frozen, cold to the touch. I like my eggs over medium. To clarify, over medium is when it’s fried on one side, then flipped over so that whatever egg whites that were still runny will finish cooking and the yolk will be running but slowly, because they will be medium, or half way cooked. They served me nasty uncooked, running egg whites, and completely raw egg yolks. Their sausage were also rushed and not cooked or heated all the way through. And yes, the second time we mentioned it to our waitress these problems from the first time, and the 3rd time we mentioned these problems from the 1st and 2nd time, but either it wasn’t transmitted to the kitchen or they just don’t care. It’s also worth mentioning that we went just before the breakfast rush, so it’s not like they were slammed, but even if they were, no excuses for rushing out food and not properly cooking it. Finally the coffee. Oh my.. that’s just hot black water. Nasty tasteless coffee in coffee pots that have never seen a scrub brush, because they are nasty crusty. So as with everything and everywhere else we have experienced here in SA, it all comes down to this; either people just don’t know any better, or they don’t care, or they just bend over and take it afraid to stand up for what they are paying for. There’s no other explanation as to why we never see real, raw reviews like mine. No way we are the only ones that had these repeat experiences. Or there’s one more possible reason, maybe they are afraid of hurting people’s feelings. It’s a thing these days. So it will only get worse folks.

This may be San Antonio Puerto Rican food but it's definitely NOT Puerto Rico-Puerto Rican or Nuyorican Chinese food in the least. The service, when we walked up was not as friendly as others have experienced. The glass in front of the warming table was dirty and the chicharrones under the heat lamp looked dry. Fried rice and lo mein are $1.25 extra. At a Chinese takeout. It was insane to pay more for mediocre, HARD fried rice that was absolutely not Puerto Rican-style fried rice. It tasted like it was a day old, it was so hard. If you're selling yourself as Boricua Chinese food then give us the ham, ribs, onion, and lettuce like it should be. That or serve stir-fried rice that's fresh and not old. We ordered the two meat plate; one with pepper steak and ribs, the other with Mongolian beef and chicharron de pollo and the birria eggrolls. The ribs shouldn't be sold. The breading is gummy, not crispy, the meat was dry, and the sauce is over-seasoned with Chinese five spice or some other ungodly spice that overwhelmed the palate. Whatever that anise-five spice situation is needs to be scaled back or eliminated. The amount of spice on the ribs is the complete opposite of PR or NY costillas, spicy instead of sweet and sour. The pepper steak was okay, but you can tell it never touched a wok. The meat lacked that caramelization. I think they should start truly stir frying their meats. The chicharron de pollo was the only menu item that tasted like it was "Puerto Rican," it was well seasoned and the chicken was decent, a little on the dry side. The Mongolian beef was beef with broccoli so that was a wash. They need to ensure they're serving the customers what they ordered or prepare the food the traditional way so there are no surprises. The birria egg rolls were rolled too small, which means the inside of the egg roll was gummy. If they rolled them a little bigger there wouldn't be excess wrapper inside. The consommé it came with has globs of fat floating in it but was decent. I'm bummed because we went hoping to have a new place that would bring a taste of home. Unfortunately, I can't bring myself to go back because it just wasn't worth the money.

I enjoyed the lunch special of orange chicken w/fried rice & eggroll. It was tasty & a large portion. Good value for your dollar! Looks spotlessly clean & the staff (owner?) super friendly. It's inside the gas station store so it's to go & delivery orders only, though there is a little outside patio with 2 picnic tables. I'll be going back to try other menu items. This is a great addition to our Leon Springs/Fair Oaks Ranch community.

The place is very chill, and the beer I got (Ultimus) was really good. We got the giant pretzel with beer cheese, very nice. Across the place was a food truck were we got some chilaquiles with brisket 🤤, really vast and fulfilling, and a chicken quesadilla, very good as well. The only thing the place lacks is more advertisement

Hidden gem here is worth a visit. Nice location under the Historic Hays St. Bridge. Plenty of parking (which is starting to be a pain in SA), huge patio, outdoor games with shade from the Hays St. Bridge, and a skatepark next door if that's your thing. Wifi available as well so I'll be back to meander through some work with a pint or two. Beer was great and well priced. I got the Texas Juicy IPA which had a very punchy tropical citrus hit thay was very refreshing. My wife got the Hayz Street IPA, a more standard, less fruity, well-rounded Hazy IPA. Both were great, and we'll be back to try the rest soon. The food truck outside hooked it up as well. I got a pulled pork sandwich that was excellent. My wife got the loaded Brisket nachos, and let me tell you... that brisket... world class. I'm not a potato salad fan myself, but my wife said it was the best she had ever had, going out of her way to tell the cook. Basically, everything on our plate was excellent. Can't find a fault here, honestly.
