Dong Tay Restaurant - Norfolk
I enjoyed my visit here! I decided to try this place out with a friend of mine who is vegan and I was happy to see that there were many options for him! It's most certainly a beautiful low-key place walking in and had a nice ambience. We were seated immediately after walking in which was great! The service was cool but could have been a bit better. Now the food was amazing! I ordered the shrimp deluxe with white rice and was thoroughly impressed! It was well seasoned and the portion size was great for the price. I'd highly recommend this place and look forward to returning!
The place is empty on a Saturday evening. Walked in and nobody’s around to welcome or seat you. Walked around and a guy was on his phone hidden behind a column foundation, plugged in on the wall jack. He finally saw us sat us down and took our order. I got the shrimp Pad Thai, and wife ordered beef vermicelli salad. Food came, but he got my order wrong. The nice lady server took away the shrimp fried rice l, and apologized. The vermicelli salad was good, but the beef was a bit chewy and cut into long strips. It was still refreshingly good. Pad Thai came, and it smelled good. Topped with 5 large shrimps, and there was the smokiness that I like and actually craves for. This made up for the overall taste which lacked sweetness. The overall experience is okay, and we’ll be back for more. The place is spacious, and be great for a big party I think.
Yummy Wok
This place has authentic food. We know.. we've lived in Asia for many years ! We tried the Singapore noodles, spicy 😋. The pork finally had the beef. All very well cooked. We enjoyed well priced food that is cooked well. Furthermore, it's nice to support a family business!
Absolutely terrible customer service. The lady working there is beyond rude, and the guy just follows whatever she says like he’s scared of her. My daughter called in our order and accidentally said no vegetables, but quickly clarified just no peas and carrots. The lady said okay. When I picked up the food and verified my order as I always do, she immediately got an attitude instead of just fixing the mistake. Instead of remaking the rice properly, she just tossed onions on top of the side that was visual . When I called back to explain what was happening and I wasn’t happy with me order, I could hear her yelling loudly in the background, which just proved she didn’t care about getting the order right—just about being right. At that point, I didn’t trust them to remake my food and just wanted my money back. The guy told me to bring the food back the next day for a refund. Seriously? It was already late and was annoyed by her mistake. This place is overpriced and clearly doesn’t care about their customers. I won’t be back, and I wouldn’t recommend anyone waste their money here.
Bangkok Garden
I had an incredible meal at Bangkok Garden! The fresh spring rolls were light and perfectly crisp, setting the stage for the feast ahead. The beef pumpkin curry was rich, flavorful, and wonderfully balanced with tender meat and creamy pumpkin. The chicken pad Thai was easily one of the best I’ve had—savory, with just the right hint of sweetness and plenty of vibrant flavors. And to top it all off, the mango sweet rice was an absolute delight, a perfect end to a perfect meal. Exceptional food, great service, and a warm atmosphere. Highly recommend
The flavours in the food are really good , quantity is reasonable and the variety of spice levels are just perfect!
Volcano Sushi & Asian Bistro
This place is an absolute blast! For just $16.99, you get an all-you-can-eat sushi experience that feels unreal. The quality is chef’s kiss, and they don’t skimp on quantity either. Every roll, every bite—totally worth it. It’s wild how much you can eat for the price. Affordable, delicious, and leaves you stuffed and happy. Can’t recommend it enough!
DO NOT EAT HERE. There was hair in my gyoza sauce and he tried to say he’ll get me a replacement after i already ate the whole dish that had the hair in it. My friend also ordered fried soft shell crab and it also had hair it in. I have been finding reviews about this place saying that there has been maggots, flies, and hair in other people’s food. The way the boss handled it was unprofessional and rude. He still tried to charge us the full amount saying we chose to eat. As if it’s not a restaurant? If you want a nice sushi experience, when you see their restaurant sign just keep walking and find a different cuisine.
Golden Gate Restaurant
12/06/24 I stopped by and get 6 egg rolls, large house fried rice, and large beef and broccoli. It was 60 dollars. The food was really good for the location. The amount they give you was big for the mains. Probably would order the smaller size going forward. The beef and broccoli has a great sauce. The egg roll are 3 bucks each but they are tasty.
I personally judge based off the pepper steak and lunch specials.. this pepper steak is some of the best I’ve ever had no kizzy. I’m over here lapping like a dog it’s so good. I like how she was confident when we asked for her recommendations.. She stood on business and I see why. It’s really the peach tea for me lol. 😝 I planned on saving food for later but you know how that go… first we hesitated pulling up because of the surrounding buildings but you really can’t judge, because they’re very clean inside! She was extra friendly also, but even if she wasn’t I’d still be back because it’s good Chinese that’s all that matters.
Super China
didnt realize this was in the plaza so tried it out. ordering online was easy. i got a text when it was done. went in, told her my order, went out. fortune cookies arent included, i think it’s a very small charge. i think these were rib tips and pork lo mein. superrr tasty. containers are microwaveable if you want to save as leftovers too! i recommend!
Super China has been my go-to spot for Chinese in Norfolk for over a decade. The general tso's chicken combo with pork fried rice and an egg roll and chicken in garlic sauce combo are my absolute faves and are only $10.65 (before tax). This place is takeout only with a large menu. Canned and bottled beverages are available for purchase as well. Photos from various visits include: 1) Pint of chicken lo mein (served in a bowl) 2) Pineapple chicken combination plate (included pineapple, carrots, and green peppers) in a sweet sauce 3) Chicken in garlic sauce combination plate (included broccoli, carrots, green peppers, onion, and water chestnuts) in a spicy garlic sauce 4) General tso's chicken combination plate with a spicy sauce
China King
I eat here almost every week! Best hot and sour and egg drop soup I’ve ever had, hands down - crispy orange chicken, kung pao chicken and human shrimp are my go to dishes. Always hot and fresh and owners are polite and friendly. Best Chinese food in the area!!
The food here is amazing and service is normally very fast and the lady is very polite, the building itself tho could be cleaned more
Chen's Kitchen Chinese Restaurant
This is my go-to Chinese takeout place. I order online and it is always ready when I arrive. Prices are good for the amount of food you get. I love the pork egg rolls, general tso's chicken and the beef with mushrooms or broccoli. I know pancit is not Chinese but the house special pancit is delicious as well.
My sister and I recently visited this restaurant on a Friday night. We frequently patronize this restaurant and never had any problem with the food but on this particular occasion the food was horrendous. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken and it was full of tasteless and unseasoned vegetables and peanuts. There was barely any chicken. The egg rolls have gotten smaller but there still $2.75. My sister vomited and she hasn't had any difficulty with this food before. So, don't patronize this restaurant because now they're cutting corners and charging a lot of money. If you see the bald headed man cooking, leave immediately.
No 7 Grill Express Restaurant
Very kind service and delicious food. I got the chicken plate and a side of vegetable spring rolls. The chicken bowl was bite-for-bite delicious, highly recommend. The vegetable spring rolls had nice taste but I probably should have avoided the fried food (personal issue). There is ample seating in the side room, to the right of the ordering counter, and lots of parking out front. Simple setup but lovely, would come back.
Bottom line: avoid if seeking authentic Chinese food, or looking for fancy setting. However, hands-down BEST service from the manager! This is a no frills restaurant blocks from ODU. Ordered the Chicken and Shrimp plate. My friend that ordered the cheaper beef dish got more food (square takeout container vice my smaller circular container). Not sure how that works out, but the main issue is the insane AMOUNT of sodium/MSG/sugar that went into the dish. I literally felt my blood pressure rising halfway through the meal. I am assuming this restaurant is tailoring their menu to their typical clientele, but as an Chinese-born American from NYC and having ate many home-cooked authentic meals as well as diverse range in quality restaurant food, this meal was unacceptable to my typically very easy-going palate. It saddens me to write a poor review on the food, (this being my first), as the manager was extremely kind, attentive, and genuinely a great guy! He came by multiple times to check on us and other customers (not the norm for take out-focused restaurants). Also, the restaurant features large (for a take out spot) seating area (easily accomodating 20 people). Best of all, no tipping asked. This is the first place where the point-of-sale system doesn't ask for a tip. Kudos! To me, tip shouldn't be needed if no dedicated waiter service. If you like "Americanized" Chinese food, give this place a chance; the manager is super friendly.
China Hut
Went there the other day. Ordered up the shrimp with lobster sauce, lo mein and broccoli with garlic sauce. All small orders and it seemed to feed a party of 4. Not too bad. It was good too.
Called in my order and was told 25 mins. Got there and paid, the guy at the register told me it was almost ready. Waited a good amount of time and my food still wasn’t done. Stood there and watched them make my food after the cook asked me what did I even order. Spent $26 and the food was not good. We ordered General Tos chicken and Chicken Egg Fu Young, which came with egg rolls and I can honestly say the food wasn’t good. I only tried this place because the reviews said it was a 4.4 out of 5. Super disappointed..
Royal Garden Chinese Restaurant
I've been coming here since I was a kid, and now i bring my offspring with their offspring.😁 Lunch specials are the best
Some of the best Chinese food, portions are large for price, waitress is extremely pleasant, and the restaurant is very clean.
Wan Shung Chinese Restaurant
First of all, let's give a HUGE shout out to businesses like Wan Shung that are open on Xmas Day to serve the customers that don't feel like cooking on this day! I got there today at 11:10am and this was my first time seeing the parking lot damn near packed! Go ahead and get that Xmas bag, Wan Shung!! I knew I was not going to cook a dern thing all day, so I had 2 orders of General Tso's chicken and a small order of boneless spare ribs. I mainly order those 2 when I go here. I've sampled some other items on their menu and never had a problem with the taste or order. They have closed their dine in area since Covid blew up on the scene last year. They do have 3 seats in the area where you order. While waiting for my order today, we were pleasantly amused with the singing of the staff's children singing Christmas carols on the other side of the wall in the old dining area. I've been coming to this location for over 12 years and will continue to frequent this location.
The first time I ordered from this place, I asked for honey shrimp, which was not on their menu. They agreed to make it for me 👍Today is the second time I ordered from them and everything is excellent! So, I left a glowing review for this place before, but I have come back to change it. I just called to place another order for pick up, and I was told that I have to go online and place it through an app like uber eats. So, just to order food from this restaurant, you have to pay a fee to a third party app. I'm not going to drive there to go inside to place my order and wait, rather than ordering before going there, just to avoid paying a fee. Ridiculous.
