Mission Chinese Food
Sometimes we read the lowest reviews of restaurants to see why people rated a restaurant poorly. The low reviews for MCF mentioned too much fennel. We took one bite of the TINGLY SZECHUAN Mapo Tofu and realized the “fennel” was actually intense Szechuan peppercorn flavor. So yeah those dishes are very flavorful (and delicious) altho we did not find them too terribly spicy. Great vegan options we really enjoyed the mushroom mapo tofu, Mongolian long beans, rice cakes with tofu skins.
Maybe one of my favorite restaurant as it also such a classic on mission. It used few years back to be totally packed but now it’s easy to get in and try their totally atypical Chinese cuisine. I had the Lo-mein with duck confit, a very large portion that can be shared frankly, beautifully executed and tasted amazing! Got also the pork belly caramelized one of their signature dish. The staff is so nice and welcoming. They even offered me a coke. I am never disappointed
Mama Ji's
Decent cheap Chinese food. It's definitely better than most Chinese options at a similar price in SF (or the US broadly), so I understand the high average rating, but there are much better higher end Chinese options available elsewhere in SF if you know how amazing good Chinese food can actually be and want something like that.
Amazing service here. Our server really took the time to walk me through the gluten free options. Not only that, he carefully deliberated which ones would be tastiest after making the necessary substitutions! And the chicken beans dish I ultimately ordered was indeed flavourful ☺️ We also enjoyed the Chinese broccoli 🥦 We had a lovely time here. Thank you for a great evening!
Wan Kee Restaurant
Clean spot in the Mission, settled between 17 and 18. Wan Kee is a clean dinner serving Chinese comfort food, the food spread is nicely put together, you can choose your food by the item. The food is cooked constantly being replaced and cooked in small portions. You can choose to go food or seat inside.
I just went for some steamed rice. I don't think the lady there liked that I was only getting rice because when I got home and was getting ready to eat it I noticed, what looks like a cat hair and some dirty black piece of glass thing on the inside of the lid. Gross! Disappointed,I'm not going to eat it or ask for my three dollars back. I'm not going to argue with anyone today.
Dumpling Kitchen - Castro
Food: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Price to Portion: 3/5 Overall: One of the better restaurants I'd consider going to in the castro. Definitely a solid choice. The extended review... Food: 4/5 - Got a bunch of different things. Of course the ones to get always are the soup dumplings and the pan fried Shanghai buns which are delicious. Service: 4/4 - Friendly and attentive staff Ambiance: 4/4 - Nothing special about the ambiance but it's comfortable and spacious.
Dumpling Kitchen in Castro exceeded all expectations for our friend's birthday celebration. From start to finish, the experience was a culinary delight. The friendly waiter guided us through the menu, and each dish we selected was a flavor explosion. The garlic eggplant stole the show with its perfect balance of savory goodness. Every bite felt like a celebration of taste, and we left feeling fully satisfied. The festive atmosphere added to the experience, making it a memorable evening filled with laughter and delicious food. We can't wait to return to Dumpling Kitchen for another gastronomic adventure.
bao
Excellent Chinese dim sum spot. I ordered the house special xiao long bao and loved the idea of serving each one in an aluminum foil cup to catch the soup drippings. I also tried the chive and shrimp pan-seared dumplings, which were delicious and generously filled with shrimp. The sweet buns were adorably designed, and the seafood fried rice had a great wok flavor. The restaurant was very clean, and the service was excellent. Highly recommended!
I’ve tried countless dumplings, from restaurants to frozen ones, and even some my friends made themselves. But let me tell you, this is different and the best. We’ve tried steamed shrimp dumplings, wontons, and potstickers dumplings, and each one was exceptional in its own way. However, the shrimp dumplings are simply mind-blowing. You have to try them! 😍
Mission Hunan
Mission Hunan Restaurant’s most famous dish was the spicy crispy chicken over rice…it was crispy as described and the sauce was so 💣💣! My good friend got that bitter melon and he says it was very good, too! Being in the Mission area…got a little questionable. But one bite of that spicy crispy chicken…who cares anymore of the area! 😂😂😋😋 And oh….free soup too!
The food was OK. The service was TERREBLY aweful from the receptionist to the cleaner. Make sure you check the bill EXTREMEMLY carefully before making the payment (They calculated my bill by hand and gave me only the total number (which was wrong). They charge you $1 for the 2nd plastic takeaway container (although e got two leftover dishes)... The cleaner yelled at us when we used more another piece of napkin which we grabbed from the next table. She snapped us to tell us to ask HER PERMISSION to grab another napkin... Unbelievable service! SFO, 09/2022
Big Lantern
Open late and serving mouthwateringly delicious vegetarian food, this place is an absolute gem! Highly recommend: ✅Chives and vegetarian chicken dumplings – Bursting with amazing flavor. ✅Big Lantern fried rice with meatless chicken – Incredibly flavorful and satisfying. ✅Singapore noodles – Deliciously seasoned and well-balanced. ✅Hot sake – The perfect warm-up on a windy night in SF. ✅Wood ear mushrooms with meatless fish – A bold and flavorful dish, though it would be even better with some complimentary rice. ✅ Spinach tofu soup – A simple, comforting soup that gives a warm, cozy feeling. Also nice: 🆗 Meatless chicken shiu mai – A decent option, though it could use a bit more flavor. 🆗 Chili cucumber – The sauce was delightful, but I’ve seen more refined cucumber preparations. 🆗 String beans with meatless chicken – The dish felt a bit dry and could have used more sauce. The texture of the meatless chicken was nice, though the string beans might not have been the best choice for me. That said, like every dish here, it was packed with flavor. Lively even on a weekday night, this spot offers great prices, a cozy atmosphere, and an unbeatable vegetarian menu. Highly recommend!
No thrills no chills but if you are in the mood for some decent Chinese food, Big Lantern works. Certainly the menu is way too long and americanized to a large degree but the flavours are alright. I stayed away from the typical sweet and sour dishes and instead enjoyed the asparagus in black bean sauce, the crispy chicken is yummy and the Mandarin lamb was tendered and not dripping of hoisin sauce which I appreciate. Good spot for a quick fix without killing your wallet.
HK Lounge Bistro
Came here for my partner’s birthday and what an experience! Good - The service is really good - this is the first place that serves you XLB onto your spoon - Nice staff, let us celebrate his birthday and gave us a sparkler - Great food, I liked the honey walnut prawns, the fried noodles, the Tamago tofu a lot - Cozy homey ambiance. - Decently priced for 6 people! Good value Bad - The table wasn’t ready until 15 min after the reservation time Overall this was such a good experience I’d come again!
Delicious food, beautifully presented, with both traditional dishes (beef with bitter melon, walnut prawns, Peking duck) and interesting house variations (coffee glazed pork ribs, Chilean sea bass). Very attentive and friendly staff and quick service.
Panda Express
I’m so excited to finally try the famous infamous Panda Express! It’s located at the food court at the shopping mall. I got the combo with white rice, broccoli, tofu and of course orange chicken. It was great just like what I imagined. Portion was perfect and satisfying. A great option for a quick meal in Downtown San Francisco.
Amazing cleanliness, speed, delicious food and gorgeous looking food - very appetizing. They work amazingly: quickly, politely! I knocked over the drink and the worker immediately cleaned up quickly and efficiently. Thanks for the service! I recommend.
7 Mission Restaurant
This place is definitely going to be one of my go to spots! This place is not too far from my work and I cannot believe this is the first time I’m coining here. If you love Asian food, you need to come eat here. I mean it’s nothing fancy but the food is good and hits the spot! Came here with my co-workers and funny enough we ordered all the same things. The crispy pork chops with steamed rice or fried rice is bussin (very good)! I give that dish 5 stars! I’m pretty sure all the other dishes are great too. So the way it works is you can order at the counter or at your table. They serve you and then pay at the counter on your way out. The service is great, not a very long wait to get your food. The restaurant looks like a mini cafe but it can probably seat about 40 plus or minus. It’s clean but it can get crowded a bit loud. So there’s plenty to choose from in the menu. You better believe I’m coming back!
Had a tasty braised tofu combo hotpot which was really exceptional Good wok hei flavor, excellent ingredients. I gobbled it up so quickly that the rice in the bottom of the pot didnt get to form that crispy crust that can be such a treat. This is a basic, hole in the wall place and if this is the standard of food at a modest price, it is a gem not to be missed
Sizzling Pot King
This place was amazing! I loved the pork belly and it was a sizzling spicy!! The fried shrimp rice was tasty…but everything was!! We ate and still we were stuffed. Food is authentic and service was promoted, quiet, and nice. Found this place in google reviews and I was so happy to try it but even happier after we all loved it.
If you know the saying “yeet hay,” then you would love this place. If you don't, then do your research because yeet hay is good food once in a while. If you are sensitive to spices then I recommend you go down a notch then your usual. I typically can handle spice but order a medium. I should have gone down a notch here. Very yummy food paired with rice. Rice was a little bit overcooked but I would come back.
HULU WA CHINA BISTRO
Came here with a friend and wow the food here is amazing and cheap! Good: - Super nice staff and really reasonable prices for good portion sizes - The food came out super quickly - The Mongolian beef was the best I've had in the city! So much flavor, and it was really chewy but pliable - Nice place to catch up with friends, quiet interior - The chow fun was really tasty and addictive, good texture and temperature Bad: - The place is small there are only really 3 tables in the space Overall I liked how this was a new find and would come back.
Wow oh wow!! Food is absolutely amazing, best Chinese food we have ever eaten! Fresh ingredients perfectly cooked, healthy (not drowning in oil). Stayed in SF for a few weeks, only regret is we didn’t find this place sooner - will place another order to bring back to rural Sonoma.. Thx soooo much Hulu Wa China Bistro!!
