Fortune House
This place is a wonderful hidden gem for Southbury. The food was made fresh and very tasty. The kind lady who took our order was very polite and made sure we got everything we ordered. The food was still yummy a day later and made for delicious leftovers. I'm so glad to know that we have this kind of amazing food so close to home.
Husband's verdict: This spot's like a Bronx joint minus the faded signs – the ultimate praise from a true New Yorker. Food's fantastic, service is on point. Solid 10/10 – we'll definitely be back for more!
Oriental Gourmet
Server was nice. Creepy guy at the sushi bar kept staring at me. Food was small and not cooked correctly or enough. Made me sick. Waitress held out a pad and waited for me to tip her. Food was not good. It was creepy and quiet in the restaurant. Food is overpriced and mediocre. I would like a refund from the manager. I spent 83 dollars on two small appetizers and one meal small with two iced down alcoholic beverage. It’s a dirty small restaurant. The chicken taste dirty and chewy. Vegetables were not cooked all the way. Would not recommend this place to anyone for a good time or a good food. Limes and lemons in my drink were used and they had seeds in the drink! Contact me for a refund please it’s getting disputed. Possibly the worst and most expensive Chinese food I’ve ever had.
Quiet atmosphere but the food and service speak volumes… Ate the Lunch Special : Sesame Chicken w/ pork fried rice and a wonton soup. Price was reasonable for the quality of the food. Was also treated to dry chips and some dipping sauces. A definite recommend for a quick bite!
Ming Feng Chinese Restaurant
From the moment we call, we are always greeted with unusually friendly service that makes us feel welcome. The staff goes above and beyond to ensure our comfort and satisfaction throughout the ordering process and for the meal. The food is undeniably authentic, bursting with flavors that transport us back to our travels through China with every bite. Each dish is visibly prepared with care and attention to detail, showcasing the chef's expertise and dedication to quality. It's refreshing to find such genuine flavors in a Chinese takeout place, making this restaurant always a worthwhile choice for Chinese takeout. Their continuous innovation and creativity are worth highlighting. They regularly introduce new and creative ideas to their menu that are truly worth trying. Exploring their menu feels like embarking on a culinary journey rather than just ordering typical takeout. And let's not forget about the prices, which are surprisingly reasonable. This makes it not only a delicious dining option but also an affordable one, perfect for those looking for a fulfilling meal without breaking the bank.
Super friendly staff. I've always gotten the General Tso's Tofu here and it's so good that it should get an award. Best in CT! It's very sad that I've moved towards Hartford. However... whenever I'm nearby, and in the mood for Chinese food, I will order here.
Dragon 168 Chinese Restaurant
It was my first day in Connecticut. I randomly chose Dragon 168 for some Chinese food. I'm glad I did. Everything was delicious. I haven't had good Chinese food in a long time and thus made up for all the bad. I will definitely go back, and I highly recommend it . We had House Mei fun, chicken and broccoli, General Tso"s chicken, chicken fried rice, fried chicken wings, Krab Rangoon, and egg rolls. Generous helpings, friendly staff, 5 starts!!
All the food tasted the same my spicy chicken was not spicy and bland the beef and broccoli tasted the same as my chicken bland stir fried rice wasn't seasoned either. Despite the food the service was great. Just needs more seasoning
Jia Mei Asian Kitchen
Hands down the best Chinese food on the shoreline and maybe Connecticut. Always fresh meat, seafood and vegetables prepared without a ton of oils, sauces and salt/s to drown flavor. They also will prepare dishes for you including doing gluten free on dishes like General Tso’s or sesame chicken with rice/tapioca flour vs wheat.flour.
How this place only scores 4.4 is crazy to me. Always fresh and delicious. Always fast friendly service. One of my favorite places for Chinese in CT. If you’re looking for greasy this isn’t the place. Also reasonably priced which is tough these days!
Dragon Garden III
Stopped in to get some sauteed broccoli to go with a sushi roll from down the road. Was NOT disappointed! I ordered a side of crab rangoons to try as well, because for the price, I couldn't pass it up. They were so good! My boyfriend ate most of the bag, and we went right bag in for a second! The owners are very kind, and you can tell she puts a lot of love into her food. The taste is excellent. Wonderful place. Highly recommended you give them a try. I'll be back for sure!
What a Gem 💎!! Wonderful service, Delicious food, and great prices!! It may have been our first time but most certainly not our last !🫶🤘
Dumpling House
Please keep in mind, I rate restaurants based on expectations. Obviously a Michelin star restaurant will have higher expectations than McDonalds. With that being said, Dumpling House was great for a lower end Chinese Cuisine. The dumplings were excellent! I would say the dumplings really stood out. Wonton soup was great. General Tso’s Chicken was dry and the chicken was chewy. The fried rice was good too. It was great for what it was. The waiter let us bring in pizza from the place next door for my kids since they don’t eat Chinese. Decently priced, great service, I was happy with our experience here!
The service is slow but the food is really nice! You can do takeouts or there’s a small seating arrangement, nothing fancy but id nice and comfortable. I loved the spring rolls, Chef special dumplings and the House special fried rice! I also tried wontons in chilli sauce and recommend trying spicy chicken if you like spicy food!
Steamed
Steamed is one of the few restaurants I would truly consider a “hidden gem” on the shoreline. I would give it 6 stars if I could. From the simplicity of the menu to the fresh, quality ingredients to their divine sweet chili sauce, everything about Steamed is perfect. Not to mention, the ambiance and overall dining experience has always been a pleasure. Menu highlights include the Chengdu pork dumplings and soup dumplings. On top of those, the pork and pork belly buns are incredibly flavorful, and even the basic chicken dumplings are great. The boba is decent but the food is where this restaurant shines. Always will be a go-to for a quick bite with friends or family.
One of my favorite places, I get them at least once every two weeks. Whether it’s dining in or take out, it always tastes amazing. The teas are great too!
Old Street Dim Sum and Hot Pot
My first hot pot! Such a great experience! I loved every moment of it! The restaurant is gorgeous. The service was excellent. The restaurant is very clean. We went for lunch. We each paid 30 bucks, and it's all you can eat. We started with the cucumber salad, which was delicious We had noodles, vegetables, crabs, beef, pork, and so much more. There's plenty of options. We had a choice of 2 broths. We decided on pork and spicy. We did mild spicy, and it was definitely spicy, which I enjoyed because I have a high tolerance for spice. You order on a little iPad machine, and they just keep bringing food out. They also have a sign at the table with cook times for the food, which is great. It's definitely one of my new favorite restaurants. I'll 100 percent be returning. This place is a must!
What can I say, I was blown away with the Dim Sum. Closest taste and quality since I moved back from Hong Kong. Our waiter Jason was very attentive, as were the other servers passing by our table. We have been there twice in one week and can't wait to get back and try the Hot Pot.
LAO SZE CHUAN MILFORD
10/10 This is the best traditional Szechuan Chinese restaurant in CT! Great to see it’s still top notch. The food is incredible, as is the service and atmosphere. They’re very friendly and kind. I usually don’t get to try spicy Szechuan dishes because of my peanut allergy but they took good care of me! This is the first time we’ve tried their beef hotpot and it was divine! 🤤 We ate so much but felt very ‘clean/healthy-full’ as nothing was heavy and everything was so fresh. Also the portions are big. Can’t wait to go back. 😋 (What we ordered in the picture captions)
My wife and I stopped in this past weekend for a quick bite since New Haven was absolutely swarmed by Yale undergrad move in. The renovations have really gone quite far in modernizing the location. My parents used to come here for well over a decade before the new ownership took over. I had grown accustomed to the plastic sheeted menus but it is fantastic to see new technology being embraced and used competently. The food is great as its always been. The bamboo shoots and tripe were generously seasoned with real flavorful chili oil unlike a lot of other chinese establishments in the area. The food is treated right and you get the full flavor palate that it deserves. The wonton soup broth was rich and not the usual one note salty water you find locally around here. The wonton skin thickness was excellent and reminds me of a homestyle wonton soup. The fried rice was not at all clumpy and flavor was very balanced. All too often in these parts you run into oily clumpy rice soaked in salt. Finally the cumin shortrib used actual cumin seeds. A lot of the local spots cheap out and just use cumin powder and frankly it just doesn’t taste the same. Aside from the now closed Great Wall in new haven (and no Chef Jiang is not the same) this is really the last truly authentic spot on the shoreline.

🫶🏾Don’t let the unassuming location in Branford fool you—this hidden gem is an absolute delight! From the moment you step inside, you’re welcomed into a warm and inviting atmosphere with exceptional service. The food is truly the star here. I enjoyed the signature salad, the chicken with spinach and mushroom gravy, and the limoncello cake—each dish was absolutely delicious. Treat yourself to an unforgettable meal, but be sure to plan ahead as they’re open Wednesday through Sunday. A must-visit!💃🏾
Visited last night for the first time. Very different decor, but very cool and stylish. Food was great. Service was exceptional. Shout out to Aaron, who was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We will be returning soon.
Dalton's
What an excellent experience. The restaurant is a bit on the small side with bar seating and a dining area. I recommend you try to get reservations to ensure you get in. We started dinner with some amazing Italian bread served with some garlic chimichurri sauce, it was delicious. For or entrees I had the ribeye special served with spinach and asparagus which was cooked at a perfectly medium rare temperature. My girlfriend had the special veal and pork ragú over ravioli. She loved it. Or meals were so good, we highly recommend. To end the evening we had the stuffed chocolate churros. Personally, I could have gone with just simple churros (no chocolate) but it was good. The service was excellent, she did a great job of answering or questions and providing suggestions. We will definitely be back.
Despite its unassuming location in a strip mall, this place is a true hidden gem! We visited on a busy Saturday night, so thankfully we had made a reservation. The restaurant offers a variety of seating options, including high-top tables, a bar with 14 stools, booths, and lower tables with chairs. Our party of five was seated at a cozy round table near the entrance, which was perfect for our group. The prices are reasonable, including both the appetizers, salads, main entrees and cocktails. We kicked things off with a selection of martinis, all priced at $12. Our server shared a range of specials, and one person in our group decided on the winter salad, while another chose the Chilean sea bass. The rest of us selected from the regular menu for our orders. If the ingredients are available, they're happy to accommodate special requests. I asked if I could substitute the veal for chicken in the Veal Limone, and they had no problem accommodating the request. The dish featured egg-battered chicken, layered with prosciutto and mozzarella, all served in a tangy lemon white wine sauce. It came with mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach. The portion was quite generous, leaving me with enough to take half home after enjoying a warm roasted beet and arugula salad with gorgonzola, candied walnuts, and a Meyer lemon dressing. My friend's Veal Limone was incredibly tender and full of flavor. The grilled lamb chops, served in a red wine mushroom sauce with baby root vegetables and mashed potatoes, earned high praise -- he practically wiped his plate clean. My husband's seafood risotto, featuring mussels, clams, calamari, shrimp, and scallops in a pomodoro truffle sauce with a hint of cream, was absolutely divine. I believe him as he did not share a bite! The last dish ordered was the Chilean sea bass special, served with clams and spinach in a light broth. It was exactly what my friend had hoped for based on the server's description, and she said it definitely lived up to its flavorful promise. The presentation was also impressive. I suggest a visit although make a reservation so you won't be disappointed as it's a popular restaurant
