The Halal Hut Stony Brook
I've been here a few times as they do make pretty good food. They have the standard Halal fare such as Gyro, Chicken, Fried Fish, etc over rice or salad which are very tasty dishes. My suggestion is to choose the Spicy Chicken for your protein as it is delicious and has a good kick of spice to it. My only complaint is that the white sauce (a Halal STAPLE) is too thin and watery. I usually have to order it on the side or it just makes the salad soggy and it all sinks to the bottom of the tray. If you like a bit of kick, order the #5 sauce. Yes, it's called number 5 and it is a sweet and spicy chipotle sauce. I am typically uninterested in anything chipotle but this sauce is quite delicious. The fried chicken is also pretty good, I do wish they made a spicy version of it as the standard coating is a bit on the bland side. Overall, I do enjoy the food though I would love to see the white sauce stepped up to compete with other local Halal haunts or, dare I say, compete with the NYC cart white sauce.
People working here are super nice and place is very clean. It is near the university which makes it a nice food option if you study or work there. Now let's get to the food...Pictured below is lamb over rice with white sauce..if you can find the white sauce! Rice were delicious...portion size is smaller than most “other” halal spots … the lamb was like cardboard...so maybe having proper white sauce would have made it taste better. but it didn't since white sauce was more like 1% milk with no flavor. They charge 4% transaction fee for using credit cards..which is annoying.
China Station 老北方麵食館
This is the best 香辣肥肠 (spicy pork intestines) I’ve had since moving to the U.S. three years ago—it tastes just like the ones I grew up eating. If you’re looking for the typical American-Chinese sweet, sour, and oily flavors, this isn’t for you. However, if you’re ready to experience authentic 鲁菜 (Shandong cuisine), 湘菜 (Hunan cuisine), and 北京菜系 (Beijing-style cuisine), you shouldn’t miss this place. The quality is excellent, the service is fast, and the prices are very reasonable!
Flavor is adequate. I enjoy heat but this was a different type for me. Not complaining that I couldn't take it. For me when I got closer to the bottom and this was on both dishes I thought they were too salty for my taste. Here I am trying to adjust and enjoy the flavor then you get that over sensation of sodium.
