Golden Bird Chinese Restaurant
Uncle Roger would approve. Hadn't had Chinese in over a year, so I felt like it was time to break that combo and order some take out from the Golden Bird, as it is a location I pass by all the time on the way home. Ordered over the phone, going with the special of the week, Pineapple Chicken with Egg Fried Rice, a Vegetable Egg Roll, and some Crab Rangoon. All together coming to a little over $31 before tip. I feel like this was a pretty fair price, given the heft of the chicken dish alone. Order only needed 15 minutes to be done, though I was held up by traffic, and yet it was still nice and warm by the time I got everything home and set out. The crab rangoon, as I expected, was delicious. Never had bad crab rangoon before, kind of hard to mess up, but I guess you can get shorted on the filling. Not the case here though. The egg roll was also pretty good, though I will say it had a slightly sour-ish aftertaste. It only happened after the first bite, so maybe it did not vibe well with the rangoon? As for the chicken, well, it was a lot. Tons of veggies, good proportions of meat, and a nice slightly spicy flavor that just lit the top of my tongue ablaze. The egg fried rice, my choice of accompanying side, was also real good. It was a bit oily, which was weird, perhaps they used fresh rice instead of day-old? But the flavor was still there and it had nice large chunks of fried egg. Yummers. Saw quite a few people saying this place has changed for the worse, but I'd disagree, it was fine by me.
The Bird isn't what it used to be. It was excellent under the previous owner with good quality, hot and tasty Chinese food. Ever since new owner took over it hasn't been the same...much higher prices, smaller portions, different food supplier because many of the dishes, appetizers, soups, etc just don't taste the same.
