Sun Wah BBQ Intro

Sun Wah BBQ, located at 5039 N Broadway in Chicago, IL, USA, can be contacted at (773) 769-1254 or +1 773-769-1254. While categorized as a Chinese Restaurant, Sun Wah BBQ offers a distinct dining experience centered around its popular roasted duck.

The environment of Sun Wah BBQ is described as a large, bustling space, almost like a factory, which reflects the high volume of roasted ducks they prepare. It's a popular spot, and many customers seem to come specifically for the "duck feast."

The signature offering is the roasted duck feast, a multi-course meal featuring freshly cut duck served with buns, duck soup, and duck fried rice. It's noted that this is not traditional crispy-skinned Beijing duck but a flavorful and tender version. For the best experience, it is recommended to call ahead to make a reservation and request a whole duck.

In terms of other services, Sun Wah BBQ also offers appetizers such as massive and well-regarded egg rolls with a crispy exterior and tasty interior, as well as crispy potstickers. Customers have enjoyed the tableside carving of the duck, adding an element of entertainment to the dining experience.

A standout feature is the affordability of the Peking Duck dinner, priced at around $75. The tender, juicy, and flavorful duck served with light and fluffy bao buns, especially with the addition of pickled onions, is highlighted as a star dish. While the duck soup and fried rice repurpose the remaining duck, some diners find the duck and baos to be the most satisfying part of the meal.

Beyond the duck, one reviewer mentioned the "egg yolk fried shrimp" as a favorite fish of the day, indicating other potentially noteworthy dishes on the menu.

Overall, Sun Wah BBQ offers a unique and enjoyable dining experience centered around their roasted duck feast at an affordable price point. Its lively atmosphere and focus on a specific, popular dish make it a notable destination in Chicago.

It is surprising to see such a big venue for roasted duck. Almost every table around us got the duck feast which consists three dishes made with duck, duck soup, duck fried rice and freshly cut duck with buns. It is not the traditional Beijing duck, if you are expecting crispy duck skin, it is not this one. For the best experience, you’d better call ahead to make a reservation and ask them prepare a whole duck for you. My favorite fish of the day is actually the egg yolk fried shrimp.

The restaurant is just one big room almost like a factory which is very fitting given the amount of ducks they are pumping out. We requested the Peking duck dinner beforehand and it seemed like everyone else had the same idea. We were a little overzealous and ordered some apps before the dinner. The egg rolls were massive and one of the better ones I’ve had with a crispy exterior and a tasty interior. The potstickers were also crispy but not as good. Onto the dinner, they carved the duck right in front of you which was a nice little show. The first thing that was ready was the duck and bao buns. We ordered an extra six which was well worth it. The bao was light and fluffy while the duck was tender, juicy, and flavorful. Sprinkling on some pickled onions, those duck baos were the star of the show. The duck soup came out next which was an afterthought with everything else we had. Finally, the duck fried rice came out which was good but didn’t contain too much duck. It’s nice that they repurpose the remaining duck into the soup and rice but all I needed was the craved duck and baos. Overall, this was a great experience and a fun night. Something unique with the Peking Duck dinner and super affordable (~$75 for the Peking Duck dinner).

The Peking Duck was out of this world! We had two people in our party and brought home leftovers for later. We arrived at 7:00 on Saturday and waited about 40 minutes, but it was definitely worth it!

Delighted as guest to a quacker 🦆off-menu specialty. Seated, welcomed, orders taken and service started immediately. Could barely keep track. Peking duck carved table side, w all sides fresh, 🦆fried rice, noodles and bbq pork. more. Eye 🍬 candy, mouth watering experience. Not a fancy place. More of a large fast paced family-style restaurant. Great for great dinner if in a hurry or take-out. Ample street and nearby parking. Can't wait for return trip to Chicago and repeat dinner w my daughter and future in-laws. Thk U Lydia and Seth.🤪🙂 Call ahead recommended. Staff geared to fast and courteous service. Give them a try soon.

We came here during weekend lunchtime for their famous 'Whole Peking Duck Dinner', including a roast duck (with buns), duck soup, and duck fried rice. Good things: It is a very rare experience which is super authentic, as the taste of the Peking duck and the way they serve the duck were both great! The service was great. We didn't wait for long and we saw how the whole duck was dissembled into pieces of skin-on meat right in front of us. The show was interesting and something you shouldn't miss if you are going for a Peking duck. The environment was nice, and it was not hard to find parking as there were paid street parking available. Downside: A large portion of the duck skin was overcooked and burnt so it tasted bitter, and the duck soup was too plain to us. The duck fried rice does not seem to be different from other types of fried rice you can get elsewhere. Summary: It is worth a try if you want to have Peking duck with authentic flavor and service in Chicago, but other associated dishes did not meet my expectation for the price I paid.
