Shanghai Terrace Intro

Fried rice and Fried noodle is the best, peking duck and lobster is on par, dim sum and soup is a bit disappointing, doesn't taste like freshly made in the day. Free mooncake and birthday cake is great, better than most desert I ever had in other restaurants, flavorful but not too sweet and too heavy. I would like to come back again for the fried rice/noodle, desert , maybe veggies next time.

An article in the New York Times said Shanghai Terrace was one of the best restaurants in Chicago. Sadly, I disagree. I had golden shrimp, lobster, and chicken dumplings, steamed pork dumplings (soup dumplings), Szechuan string beans, and the the Seabass with traditional szechuan sauce. It was not bad but not great. The fish seemed to covered in a thick hoisin sauce. It felt like Chinese food for North Americans. The terrace was lovely, especially for late summer. And it was pricey.

A perfect Saturday afternoon lunch on the terrace! Wonderful service and delicious food from start to finish. Loved all the old school attention to detail #gohere

Hefty price tag for mediocre food. I could tell that the steamed pork dumplings (XLB) were extremely overcooked from the super mushy and unpleasantly thick wrappers. The filling was flavorless and the accompanying sauce was way too sour. You're better off buying frozen XLB from Trader Joe's. Lobster and chicken dumplings with black truffle were acceptable but the wrappers, although not overcooked, were still too thick. Traditional peking duck was also a let down: the pancakes were basically thinner tortillas with papery mouthfeel and the duck tasted unseasoned. Update: I have reached out to the restaurant's assistant manager as per their request and received no response.

This is the worst dinning experience I had in last a few years. I chose the restaurant because it’s within the hotel we stayed and convenient for us to go. I also had high expectations for the restaurant since it’s a Chinese Restaurant located within The Peninsula, which has a Hong Kong background. But I have to say it’s even below the average standard of most Canton style Chinese restaurants, the menu is lack of choices, the dishes are too salty and the service is far away from the definition of fine dinning, which the price is charged based on. The food didn’t taste weird as they were too salty to tell but my little one and I developed symptoms of vomit and diarrhea after the dinner that night while my husband and older one seemed to be fine and we had to cancel all the plans the next day to rest in the hotel.
