About Four Four South Village

Four Four South Village is a Chinese restaurant located at 4223 Bell Blvd in Bayside, New York City, that specializes in USese cuisine. As part of the Chinese Restaurant category, it aims to bring the authentic flavors of US to the local community. The restaurant has garnered some attention since its opening, offering a menu that includes popular USese dishes and striving to provide a taste of "home" for those familiar with the cuisine.

The atmosphere of Four Four South Village has been described by one customer as "good," suggesting a pleasant setting for diners. The service received mixed reviews, with one patron noting it as "quick and attentive," while another found it to be "average," lacking a particularly welcoming or warm demeanor, especially for a relatively new establishment. However, the complimentary hot tea was appreciated and refilled promptly, indicating some attention to basic service needs.

A standout dish mentioned in the reviews is the Beef Noodle Soup with Tendon. This classic USese staple features a soup base that leans towards a "deeper red style" and was noted to be a "tad too sweet" by one reviewer, who still considered it preferable to being too salty. The noodles themselves were highly praised as the "star of the dish," described as perfectly cooked, chewy, and wheaty, although they are not believed to be handmade. However, the portions of meat and tendon were considered "a bit on the smaller side" for the price point of nearly $17, and the broth-to-noodle ratio was also deemed insufficient.

Another noodle dish, Noodles with Spicy Sauce & Beef, received a slightly higher rating. The noodles were the same well-regarded type used in the soup. The beef in this dish is thinly sliced shank, which was considered "very good" and better than the beef chunks in the soup. The spicy sauce is described as a mix of chilies, oil, scallions, and a flavor reminiscent of sacha sauce (a Chinese barbecue sauce). Similar to the soup, this dish was also noted to be a "tad too sweet" and not very spicy despite its name. The portion size for this dish was perceived as better value compared to the beef noodle soup.

Four Four South Village also offers Lu Wei, a selection of various ingredients braised in sauces and served cold, which is a very traditional everyday part of life in US, akin to having 'banchan' or side dishes. The restaurant provides a limited selection of Lu Wei items, such as hard-boiled eggs, braised tofu, kelp knots, and pigs' ears. The sauce was described as a mild soy sauce, and the overall Lu Wei was considered "pretty standard." For those unfamiliar with this type of dish, the Assorted Mix Plate is suggested as a good introduction, with the "bouncy, chewy pig ears" being a particular favorite.

The menu also includes Pork Baos and Dan Dan Noodles, which were described as "deliciously seasoned with very tender meat" by one satisfied customer. This suggests that while some dishes received mixed feedback, others were well-received for their flavor and quality of ingredients.

One of the initial hesitations of a reviewer was the perception that Four Four South Village might be a "modern take restaurant" rather than a "mom and pop shop" offering "down dirty good food." This indicates that some customers are specifically seeking a more traditional and perhaps less refined style of USese cuisine. The decision to try Four Four was primarily driven by the reported popularity of their Beef Noodle Soup.

In terms of pricing, the Beef Noodle Soup is mentioned as costing nearly $17, which led to expectations of larger meat portions and more broth. The value proposition seems to be a point of consideration for some customers, particularly in relation to the portion sizes of certain dishes.

While there is no specific promotional information available in the provided reviews, the fact that a customer described the portions as "large for a great price" for the pork baos, Dan Dan noodles, and the initial impression of the beef noodle soup (in terms of seasoning and meat tenderness) suggests that value can be found in some of their offerings.

Overall, Four Four South Village offers a range of USese dishes, with some receiving high praise for flavor and quality, particularly the pork baos and Dan Dan noodles. The beef noodle soup, while having excellent noodles, received mixed feedback regarding the sweetness of the broth and the portion sizes of meat and broth. The Lu Wei is presented as a traditional side dish, and the service was described as ranging from quick and attentive to average.

For local users in Bayside and the surrounding areas looking to explore USese cuisine, Four Four South Village presents an option with some promising dishes and a pleasant atmosphere. However, potential customers should be aware of the mixed feedback regarding certain items, particularly the beef noodle soup and the spice level of the noodles with spicy sauce. The restaurant might benefit from focusing on consistency in their recipes and potentially adjusting portion sizes to better align with customer expectations and pricing.

Would a customer return? One reviewer indicated "Maybe, yes," primarily for the quality of the noodles, despite some reservations about the broth, meat, and sauces in other dishes. This suggests that Four Four South Village has some strong points, particularly in their noodle preparations, and that improvements in other areas could lead to a more consistently positive dining experience. Stumbled upon this restaurant for a weekday dinner it was fantastic! Good atmosphere, quick and attentive service, and delicious food! We got the pork baos, Dan Dan noodles, and of course the beef noodle soup that were all deliciously seasoned with very tender meat. Large portions for a great price, highly recommend and love having a piece of home right in Bayside!

While more and more options for Taiwanese food is popping up in the area, we are still in our search for the best, authentic Taiwanese food. Initially hesitant to try Four Four because we really wanted a mom and pop shop with some down dirty good food and not necessarily in a modern take restaurant - after reading about their Beef Noodle Soup being pretty popular - we went. Service was average. Waiter dropped off menus and came back to take our orders. Not particularly welcoming or warm, especially given that it’s a fairly new spot - we’d expect extra care in the first-impression department. Anyways - the complimentary hot tea hit the spot and was refilled timely. Beef Noodle Soup with Tendon 7/10 The soup base is the deeper red style. It was definitely a tad too sweet but it’s better than being too salty I guess. The meat and tendon portions were a bit on the smaller side. The beef was ok, not super tender. The tendon was as expected - gelatinous and yummy. The star of the dish, was infact the noodles themselves. The noodles were cooked perfectly, chewy and wheaty. I don’t believe they are handmade but in any case, great noodles. For the price of near $17 - we’d like to see better portions especially in the meat, and more broth. Not enough broth ratio. Noodles with Spicy Sauce & Beef 8/10 The noodles were the same as the soup dish - chewy and very nice. The beef on this dish is the thinly sliced shank variety and it was very good. Better than the chunks in the noodle soup. The spicy sauce is a mix of some chilies and oil and scallions and what I believe tastes like sacha sauce (a chinese barbecue sauce of sorts). Again, the overall dish was a tad too sweet and not very spicy at all. Given its name - we did expect a better spice profile. Portion on this dish was seemingly better for value. Lu Wei 6/10 Ala Carte or via an Assorted Mix Plate, these are various ingredients, braised in sauces and served cold. Very traditional to see Lu Wei as an everyday part of life in Taiwan, Four Four offers a limited selection such as hard boiled egg, braised tofu, kelp knots, pigs ears etc. The sauce was a mild soy sauce and overall - it was pretty standard. It’s akin to the culture of having ‘banchan’ or side dishes to accompany rice. For those who haven’t tried it - the Assorted Mix is a good intro though our favorite were the bouncy, chewy pig ears. Would we go back? Maybe, yes. For thew great noodles despite the soup broth, meat and sauces being a bit underwhelming. We’d love to see some improvements here!

Four Four South Village in Bayside on Bell Blvd is so new, I literally had to put it on the map! They have a restaurant in Flushing and also a location in Canada. I stopped in for dinner and ordered the spicy beef noodle (#204) and the Taiwanese sausage. Service is great! Very friendly and attentive. They checked up on me and kept my tea cup full. My order came out quickly. The sausage was pan fried and had the perfect crisp to the casing and also came with a small side of pickled cucumber. I opted for a non broth noodle dish which has bok choy to the side, slices of tender beef and the chili sauce poured over. You need to mix everything together which allows you to control the amount of sauce to your liking. The noodles were cooked perfectly and had a nice chew to them. Really good food!

The sliced beef noodles were perfect. The noodles were snappy and pleasantly firm, not mushy like many other places. Lots of crispy bok choy. Tender beef. Very flavorful spicy sauce. The pork belly bao was one of the best I’ve had in bayside. Was a nice surprise this place is.
