New Wing Fat Chinese Restaurant
I’d say this place might be decent if you want family take out of crazy Chinese food. I’m sure it can be very filling. I had missed the lunch special and just wanted a plate to feed my son and I. I mentioned I just wanted orange chicken and chow mein, and they said they could do it no problem. Come to find out my small takeout plate cost $18. Not worth it.
Did not taste right and portion is very small
Golden Wok Bistro
Disappointed at this place, ordered food, unable to eat it due to the extreme amount of salt, DoorDash wouldn’t refund me, my husband let the restaurant know and they said to deal with DoorDash…well this goes straight to the garbage can!!!! So so disappointed!!!!
It's difficult to find a really good Chinese restaurant. We decided to try this one out and it didn't make the mark. First, it looks beat up. The interior is dark, the menus books are worn and dirty and it all looks sad. But that didn't mean the food wouldn't be good. However, it did not measure up. We got Salt and Pepper Pork Chops and Beef Chow Fun. The portions were large. The meat in the Chow Fun was was chewy and the noodles lacked flavor. The chops had an okay flavor but they were all kinds of sizes, some with sharp bone pieces and there were little pieces of breading with no meat inside. The meal was filling but disappointing.
Peking Alley
Wanted to try something new and checked out this restaurant for northern Chinese cuisine. We got the scallion pancake with beef, jianbing with fried dough, and mayonnaise shrimp. The scallion pancake with beef was really good with the sauce and the cucumbers, the mayo shrimp had too much flour but the pieces of shrimp were very large, the jianbing was good but the fried dough was so large that it filled us up fast. The staff was super nice, the portions were very big but the flavors could be better.
Authentic and delicious food! The owners are also extremely nice and friendly, highly recommend.
Little Shanghai Restaurant
Love this place. Their food is so flavorful! The pork belly ( Dong Po Pork) is my go to dish every time I visit as it melts in your mouth but it is supper rich …we tried the sweet and sour spare ribs and the were also amazing. Make sure to come hungry…Service is fast and friendly, they are often busy with large groups, but we never had to wait long.
Visited again - updated Their food was great. We tried “weekend special limited donuts and soup”. Shanghai noodle cake was really good. The food is delicious! It’s really crowded and packed with people. The variety of the menu is surprising, you better check the menu and what to order before going there. Yes, the staff was friendly and funny as many people mentioned! 🥟
Town of dumpling
Worst Dumplings Ever - Don't Waste Your Money I really regret ordered 100+ dollars food from this place. They just don't know about making dumplings. The dumplings were awful — the filling was a weird mix of bland ingredients that didn’t taste like anything it should be and not fresh at all. It was as if they didn't put correct ingredients together and without any thought for flavor. We could barely finish one bite before throw them away. To make matters worse, the dishes didn’t even match their names. I ordered “xie ke huang,” supposed to be some really crunchy cake with nice fillings but what I got was completely off, looks like some frozen beans cakes. All the other dishes the texture was terrible. The chili boil fish looks terrible in a huge tin pan, not many pieces floating in a very diluted sauce water. Looks like someone's left over. We ended up throwing away all of the food. Especially after we got some good ones from another place(yuan bao jiao zi) close by. Honestly, it wasn’t even worth trying to salvage. I don’t know what they were thinking, but they clearly have no clue how to make dumplings or other dishes. I would not recommend this place to anyone. If you're looking for decent dumplings, keep looking because this place is a complete fail.
They have a pretty big menu, so one can easily come back and not get tired of the food. Normally restaurants that specialize in dumplings have much smaller menus. Portion size is significantly smaller than Blue Sky Cafe and some traditionally pan-fried dishes are deep fried here like the green onion pancake, but otherwise we like it!
留湘小聚店 Ping‘s Bistro | San Mateo
Just amazing all around. The cabbage is savory. The pork and pepper/mushrooms are amazing. The luffah was undersalted though. I didn't care for the chicken tomato/potato pot but it's objectively cooked well. The mushroom stir fry is a must get. Cauliflower is cooked perfectly. The sour fish fillet is mid
Used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant in San Mateo county even before they moved from El Camino to Marina Foods plaza. I loved some of their lunch specials and although they kept on raising prices but at least they taste good. The service is good as they would wrap leftover food for you instead of just throwing you some togo boxes. This place used to focus on Hunan but probably sensing a lack of Yunan cuisine they are branching out to Yunan food. I don't think they are that authentic but at least they are delicious. I really like their Farmers Combo (egg, pork, wood ear mushroom and other stuff), spicy and sour beef, and Iove their conch with special mushrooms. Their spiciness is authentic so when they say original spicy make sure you can hold your spiciness before being gunho about your tolerance to spicy food. The place is not large so you may have to wait in the weekend. I do think the price is too high now especially their frog dishes but I still decided to keep the 5 star rating because it is still one of the best Chinese food restaurants in the Bay Area. Oh you can also find parking in the rear or side if parking at the front is too crowded.
Palette Tea Garden & Dim Sum 彩苑
I have visited a couple of times. This is the most stable and upscale Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood. Reservations are essential as it is often rather crowded! The food was never a disappointment, and every dish we ordered was delicious 👍 My favorite dish was the shrimp and walnuts, which was amazing. It would be nice to have some kind of call bell at the table because the restaurant is so big and it's hard to call the restaurant staff 😅
My husband and I haven't been to this restaurant in a while and everything has changed. The delicious dishes are gone, replaced by expensive and unpalatable American Chinese food. It was very expensive and the two of us were shocked by the bill in the end. Mandatory 18% tip even if there are only two people. Tips and tax were $50. Will never come back to eat again. It tastes really bad. I hope you won’t come here.
Oceanic Restaurant
My go-to neighborhood takeout place. Fast, friendly, and reasonably priced. Food ranges from good to great depending on what you're ordering. Despite the name I like their chicken better than their seafood.
Very delicious dishes, and great customer service!!! They also give a complimentary side of egg rolls. Definitely recommend!!!
Silver House
Every time we get together with families in San Mateo, we tried different kind of food. This time we visit Silver House, the restaurant that my mom used to like very much. It's on the main street, so if you're lucky you find a parking spot in front of the restaurant, if not there're a few spots in the back alley or you have to park on the street some how. The restaurant is clean and simple, it was a Sunday night so there're quite a few people eating. The chef name Wang came and help us because my sister has been coming here quite often. We ordered quite a few dishes, most of them are Cantonese style dishes, the fried eggplants are our favorite, very crispy and tasty, everyone seems to like it very much. I had a craving for Chow Fun and it was excellent too. Every Chinese restaurant I eat, I always tried the Wor Wonton soup, and this place does have good soup with plenty of meats of all kinds, the wontons are tasty, but the bowls they served are too small to hold all the wontons and soup. My nephews love the shrimp crispy chow mein and it's quite good, but the noodles are not crispy throughout but I think that's the way they cook it. The salt and pepper shrimps are crispy and excellent. The Beef with bitter melon is very delicious, not bitter at all, and great sauce. The eggplant hot pot is quite flavorful. The Kung Pow chicken was gone in second due to being to tasty. I didn't get any peanuts at all that I recalled. The price here is quite reasonable and one thing nice is the service, very attentive and fast. We had some leftover to take home for Monday's lunch and chef Wang actually put some more meats for me. Quite surprising. It was a great lunch for me the next day. Every time we want to go to Chinese restaurant in San Mateo, I always request this Silver House from my sister. It's consistently good.
Been coming here for over 20 years. No soup today and they no longer have the dessert but we always enjoy the food. We love all the salt and pepper items, chicken wings, tofu, and fish. All of these are super good and had to get multiple orders of each for 11 people. Steamed tofu we had to order by showing a picture, we get 2 orders of this too. Was here on a weeknight so it wasn’t too busy and we were able to sit and talk for awhile.
小香牛骨米粉Hunan Mifen San Mateo
Delicious and authentic Hunan noodles with lots of options for proteins. They allow for self-serve cilantro and green onions with fast service and kind staff with customers ordering on a phone. I only wish there were more vegetables inside the soup
The flavor was bold. Spicy beef noodle was very spicy, and stinky tofu was indeed stinky 😅 Recommend the fried fish as a side!
李面请 大碗刀削面 Li's Knife Cut Noodle
AWESOME NEW hole in the wall asian restaurant. I got the Mala Beef Potato Noodle! Love the flavor so much! Servings for noodles are MASSIVE. Portions are great and the pricing is awesome too. Their Chili Oil on the table is a must try btw.
The beef is super well-marinated and the portion size is great! We tried the knife-cut noodles tonight and absolutely loved them — they’re so fresh and chewy. Maybe next time I will try the 扯面. They really hit a nostalgic spot and made me feel a bit homesick
Fortune Star | Chinese Restaurant (#1 Mandarin Style)
Y’all are missing out. Easily one of the best Chinese food places in San Mateo. The sauce is always good. It tastes fresh. The chowmein is our fav in town and the portions are to share or to have the next day. I don’t want them to blow up but it’s time dashed or dined in.
I had food ordered on Doordash and Fortune Star insists you include rice on every item you buy. I thought that was strange. I ended up paying 101.00 on food through Doordash and most of the food that showed up was rice and hardly any Chinese food. I now have a pound of rice since I bought multiple items and the amount of Chinese food is minimal. Another way to screw over your customers. Never AGain.
