AAFES Food Court
Safe place to grab a bite. Choices are QDOBA MEXICAN FOOD, SLIM CHICKENS, CHARLEYS PHILLY STEAKS, SUBWAY SARKU JAPAN, BOBA + ACAI BUBBLE TEAM & SMOOTHI CAFE, and Starbucks.. Plenty of seating, great atmosphere, and shopping at the AAFES STORES and vendors.
Probably one of the worst Base food courts in the nation, which is a shame since Fort Sam is overall so iconic. Let’s start with Ming. The Chinese food is embarrassing, flavorless and most likely reheated from a frozen bag. The fried rice is dull and the egg rolls don’t have any real seasoning. Panda Express would be a Michelin Star restaurant if it were compared to this. Sarku Japan is just as bad with fried dumplings that are chewy in such a bad way. The chicken teriyaki bento is over sauces and way too salty. It’s connected to Ming so it’s easy to assume they are buying their products from the same Sam’s Club frozen section. Then there’s Charlie’s Philly Steaks which I would avoid if you’re from the east coast. They even have mushrooms in their cheesesteaks and other protein options. This might be a good thing if it tasted amazing, sadly it does not. Qdoba is an interesting choice but let’s be honest here it is not Mexican food and it’s annoying that it claims to be. I can’t really say anything bad about the food itself it’s just not Mexican. More like what an American from the western states would try to claim as Mexican. There are signs throughout the food court encouraging non military to eat there in case they thought they couldn’t but the reality is the food is subpar and not worth the disappointment. Here’s a radical idea, put decent quality food in the court and you will see an improvement in patronage. It’s terrible our service members are forced to have these horrible options thrust upon them. Do better AAFES.
