Sichuan river
New to the area and looking for good Chinese food. Fyi, we’re Chinese American from New York and have lived abroad in China, so we weren’t expecting much. Especially based on the outdoor and indoor decor and atmosphere. But had a friendly server and asked what she recommended. We went with the hot and spicy jumping fish and dry pot chicken. Both were excellent. So much so that my wife said she missed Chinese food like this. Got the fried string beans and chicken Lo mein for the kids, both of which were excellent as well. The food came out very quickly as well. Portions were large, took enough home for another small meal. Sadly the Asian buffet next door was packed and Sichuan River was mostly empty aside from some takeout orders. I’d guess the quality at a buffet is subpar (I haven’t been there). Give this place and chance, would love to see it stick around as it’s so close to home in south Austin. Will be going back.
Not sure what happened to all the reviews for this place as this establishment has been present for over 5 years now. Seems like someone deleted and recreated the restaurant on Google maps. Service is decent, the host and server is the same, more like family owned restaurant. Gives you a feeling of a cozy spot. Prices are okay, reasonable for the quantity, but quality of food could definitely be better. Food is sub par tbh, not really that cozy/ homely taste. When we asked the server that one particular was overly salted, they suggested that we order something different for next time and gave an alternative which supposedly isn’t that salty. Won’t recommend coz of the food taste.
Bamboo Bistro Westgate
Literally the best orange chicken I have ever had. Better than any sit down restaurant Chinese food I’ve had in AGES. Like since I was a kid back in Seattle.
The appetizers were yummy (especially the shrimp, it had a fluffy texture to it). The General TSO is my usual safe choice but we had the basil wings as well (very interesting + savory) and Shanghai Beef (a bit tough in my opinion but the sauce was very good). Portions are pretty big, if you are a light eater then I would recommend to not order much or be prepared to take some to go.
