Beautiful South by Kwei Fei
Went for Sunday dim sum, which is like traditional Chinese tapas. It was all sooooo unbelievably good. I’m a California native and the food was like being back in Chinatown San Francisco!! I have not seen proper dim sum of this level since moving to the south 5 years ago. My favorite dish, Lo Mai Fan, was cooked to perfection and tasted exactly right. Everything else we ordered was highly memorable as well. Will definitely be back!!!
We came for Sunday's dumpling dinner and our server was so quick, helpful, and attentive with our order. He was able to explain each dish and gave his food recommendation from this restaurant. The food came pretty fast and thats a plus. We really enjoyed the dumplings, lo mein, and shumai. The sticky rice, dry ribs, and char siu bao just okay. Their coctail was pretty good. I also like the ambience of this place. Pretty good Chinese food.
New Peking Chinese Restaurant
I ordered from the New Peking in November 2024. My first impression was the all too common older restaurant that really needs an update, or at least some work. You order from behind a plastic window that separates the kitchen and counter area from what is considered a dining room. There are a good amount of booths, it’s very dark, and as earlier stated, needs work. I ordered the General special. That came with fried rice, soup and an egg roll. I think it was about $13. I feel that was a pretty fair price considering. I also grabbed two cans of soda for another $3. Although I didn’t need the second can, my total for dinner was only about $16 total. The food itself was okay. It wasn’t bad, but I definitely have had much better. But it did the job. I couldn’t eat it all. It wasn’t bad to eat. And it was pretty cost effective. I was only visiting the area and will not become a regular customer. But if back in the area, I would consider New Peking again. It’s not the best I’ve had. But is far from the worst. Like I said, it did the job.
Omg, my food was awful. This was always the best Chinese food in downtown Charleston. However, what a disappointment.I had Beef and broccoli and General Tso Chicken...there were no sauces just the meat, which was tough and over cooked. The only thing we were able to digest was the soup. Due to the egg prices, I guess they couldn't prepare Egg Foo Yung. This place needs a deep cleaning, improved lighting and better food prep. Again, what a fall from grace, the food was awful plus 😞
