Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant
This spot serves up some of the best dim sum around—fresh, flavorful, and totally worth every cent. Lunchtime brings the classic dim sum cart experience, while dinner is order-only, which can mean a bit of a wait. But trust me, it’s worth it. The food is consistently excellent, and the service is friendly and efficient. A must-try if you’re a dim sum fan!
It might be a popular spot for others, but it’s not quite my style. I did enjoy the roasted duck and radish cakes though. The service could be better, so I’d suggest ordering ahead by phone and picking it up. I went for dinner and dined in. They didn’t have the dim sum carts, and it was super busy — you might need to wait a bit.
Dragon Inn
Food was really good. Prices not to bad. Spicy isn't spicy. Had the Beef with Spicy Garlic sauce. Packed full of flavor, but not much kick or spice. The Gyoza ( Dumplings) were pretty good, not enough dipping suave. Had 2 egg rolls which were regular egg rolls. Pretty slow, and dirty tables. Service was fast though.
Don't understand some of the negative reviews -- the staff has always been very cordial with me (offering me chili oil when I'm getting take-out, which they know I like on the side). When it comes to the food, it's within the top five strip-mall style Chinese restaurants in Durham. It's not "high-end" food, but neither is it your typical Chinese fare that's watered down in terms of spice for the American palate. Dragon Inn has that type of fare available on their regular menu, but if you order from the "Authentic Chinese Dish" section of the menu, you'll find very authentic options, with levels of spice that'll satisfy even the most seasoned -- pun intended -- heat lover. Might I recommend the Spicy & Pepper Fried Fish Filet? This is like the Chinese version of Fish & Chips, but on steroids in terms of heat. The take-out in the picture is of their ChongQuing Chili Chicken. The food is so delicious that I order once every couple of weeks or so, as a treat to myself, and wash it down with a craft imperial stout.
