China Garden on Gravois
So had one of my worst experiences. Live in Arnold/ imperial, easily 25 minutes to get the food home. Hoping the food will still be hot when I arrive. Surely it was. Got the egg drop soup out of the bag, put some ice cubes in it to help cool, went to eat it after blowing on it. Had to spit it out as it burned me immediately . Got a thermometer, the temperature was still over 150 degrees!!!! That is after a half hour, and ice was added, so how hot was it served? Upon further inspection the lid was even warped from how hot it was served!!! I can't comment on atmosphere as I was a pickup order but I can assure you I won't be eating here again. The egg drop soup was WAY WAY WAY too hot!!!
I ordered delivery, House Lo Mein, Orange Chicken with Pork Fried Rice, Sweet and Sour Chicken, and Hot Butter Chicken. The person who took my order was great, patient, polite and helpful without being chatty, I got off the phone thinking if they care about making the food as much as they do about taking the order I won't be disappointed and I wasn't! Everything was fresh and packed with care. There is a bit more sweetness to some of their dishes than I prefer, but it fully satisfied my Chinese food craving.
New China
This is a hard review to determine. As far as the food goes it's excellent. One of the best Chinese places I've eaten. I've ordered pick up 5 times so far. All combination plates that cost $10 even. They come with ham fried rice, your choice of an entree, and either an Egg Roll or two Crab Rangoon. So far I've tried the beef and broccoli combo, which the gravy is beyond amazing. The only complaint I have about this dish is the broccoli both times were not cooked long enough, so the broccoli was too hard. All the combos have very large proportions and will fill you up, and even enough for two helpings with me. The second dish I tried was the ham Lo Mein combo. It was excellent and I have no complaints with it. The third dish I've tried is the sweet and sour chicken combo. I'm used to getting the chicken and sweet sour sauce separately, but this dish came with the sweet and sour sauce already dumped and soaked on the chicken nuggets. It actually was very good, even with a different spin on it then I'm used to. With all this said about the food here's where my review goes south. Every time I call to place my order the person on the phone is rude. They're also pretty rude in person. But then I realized something tonight as I was waiting in line to pick up my order. The patrons every time I've been in this restaurant have been rude and arguing with the employees over petty stuff. So, if I put myself in their shoes, I'd probably be pretty upset after 5 or 6 hours of abuse. The location of this restaurant would probably explain why the patrons are always starting trouble. It's not the safest or the best neighborhood in St Louis. I would definitely recommend eating here because their food is off the chain awesome. But, also expect to maybe wait a few minutes for the drama to unfold before you get waited on and get your food.
I personally don’t see the hype after trying this place, but a lot of people in the reviews seem to like it. It’s not bad, but it surely isn’t delicious or good in my opinion. I’m also not from STL, so this may be the norm for Chinese takeout here (but I doubt it). There really wasn’t much flavor in anything. The wings were fried hard which I usually prefer, but it made them lose their batter, and they definitely weren't marinated before cooking because the meat was bland. The fried rice is darker than any Chinese spot I’ve seen, so I assumed it’d be loaded with flavor, but unfortunately no. Not bad food, but I wouldn’t call it good either. Just something to fill your stomach if other options are closed. Order ahead if you do try it though, because the waiting area is super small and you’ll be standing/sitting with a lot of people around you. There’s also no dining allowed inside.
Kim Van Restaurant
Best St. Paul sandwich I've found so far. Sometimes a little salty, but still the best I've had. I've tried other food from here, but mainly come for the St. Paul. You can call in a pickup order, which seems to be what most people do. Or you can come wait while your order is being prepared. They have a dining room but rarely have I seen anyone eating there... the wait is usually something like 15 minutes. You ring a bell through the plastic partitioned ordering window when you arrive and someone will come out of the kitchen (if no one is already there) to take your order. This place isn't fancy by any means, and the tables seem like they could use a cleaning. Of note are the plants up front which are seemingly ancient. Lastly, not the St. Paul, but I went in late on a rainy night and had the best egg drop soup I've ever had. It may be because I was the only customer at the time, but I will definitely be back to try for that experience again.
Had a craving for the Hot Braised Chicken wings so we stopped in. We were less than impressed by the food and customer service. Called in my order ahead of time and did not leave home for 15 minutes to allow time for the food to be ready. When we arrive there was one person ahead of us and we waited for about 10 minutes while the staff member took his sweet time checking the customer out. Then a gentleman came in who walked to the front of the line and the staff member stopped helping everyone else to get him his meal. Probably won’t be back, great customer service is a pet peeve of mine. The hot braised was more like the chicken wings that Schnucks salad bar used to have. That recipe has definitely changed. The fried rice was very dry. Again under impressed.
A-1 WOK RESTAURANT
I remember when I first started eating here I ate it 3 days in a row it was so good, but on that fourth day I’m not sure what the problem was. Maybe it was because I came and 1 1/2 hours before they closed; which in my opinion still isn’t an excuse to give me what they gave me. The chicken in the rice wasn’t cooked all the way, and the crab ragoon was stale and tasted old like it had been sitting out. I get sick easily so that one time kind of made me nervous to eat there again. Maybe I’ll give them another try cause like I said I ate here 3 days in a row and everything was great.
Very mid food but what makes it worse is that they are so greedy with the sauce packets and will charge you for each sauce if you ask for more. Slow service and slightly overpriced priced
China King
Pretty good food overall! I had fried dumplings (5/5), crab rangoon (5/5), and chicken mei fun (3/5). The mei fun wasn’t bad, a little on the bland side but I also ordered a side of general tso’s sauce and added that to the noodles which was a great flavor combo. Easy ordering, SUPER quick delivery for 730p on a Friday, I think it was like 20minutes and I received it. The website lets you personalize a lot of the dishes which was nice. Delivery driver was polite. Will definitely order again.
Sesame chicken was plump and juicy (like REAL chicken) and their fried baby shrimp were crispy and delicious and they gave me an entire bag full. I'm pretty new to Saint Louis and so far this has been the best Chinese food I've had. Definitely coming back!
