About Zongzi House
Welcome to Zongzi House, a unique Chinese restaurant located at 1901 Las Plumas Ave STE 30, San Jose, CA 95133, USA. As a distinctive establishment within the Chinese Restaurant category, Zongzi House specializes in zongzi, a traditional Chinese dish made of glutinous rice stuffed with various fillings and wrapped in bamboo or other large flat leaves, which are then steamed or boiled. Beyond their signature dish, Zongzi House also offers a selection of great Chinese home-style food, catering to both meat lovers and vegetarians. This makes it a noteworthy destination for those seeking authentic and comforting Chinese flavors, particularly the specialty of freshly made zongzi.
As a Chinese Restaurant with a focus on zongzi, Zongzi House provides a culinary experience centered around this traditional delicacy. Zongzi are deeply rooted in Chinese culture and are often eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival, but they are enjoyed year-round for their unique textures and diverse fillings. Zongzi House offers both meat and vegetarian options, showcasing the versatility of this dish. Vegetarian fillings include ingredients like tofu, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, chestnuts, and peanuts, often combined with flavorful glutinous rice. Meat fillings can vary widely, potentially including pork, chicken, or other savory ingredients, all encased in fragrant sticky rice and aromatic leaves.
The environment of Zongzi House appears to be that of a casual and welcoming eatery, likely emphasizing the freshness and homemade quality of their food. The owner's interaction with a customer who arrived late, offering the remaining vegetarian zongzi, suggests a personal touch and a commitment to customer satisfaction. The description of the food as "Chinese home food" implies a comfortable and unpretentious setting where the focus is on the authentic flavors and quality of the ingredients, reminiscent of home-cooked meals.
The primary service at Zongzi House is the sale of freshly made zongzi, available with a variety of fillings to cater to different preferences. The positive reviews highlight the availability of both meat and vegetarian options, indicating inclusivity for a wide range of dietary needs. Additionally, Zongzi House offers homemade frozen dumplings, providing customers with the convenience of enjoying their food at home. The mention that zongzi are served fresh suggests that quality and timely preparation are priorities. However, one customer noted that specific types of zongzi may sell out, recommending calling ahead if a particular variety is desired. This implies that while they strive to have a good selection, certain popular items may have limited availability, especially later in the day.
A key feature of Zongzi House is its specialization in zongzi, offering both traditional and potentially unique fillings. The positive reviews specifically call out the vegetarian (tofu, mushroom, and peanuts) and red date zongzi as being "amazing," indicating that their vegetarian options are particularly well-received. The generous portion size, as mentioned by a customer who felt full after eating just one vegetarian zongzi, suggests good value for money. The availability of homemade frozen dumplings is another significant feature, allowing customers to stock up on their favorites and enjoy them at their convenience. The emphasis on fresh preparation of the zongzi underscores a commitment to quality and taste.
The limited information from the two reviews doesn't provide an extensive list of specific dishes beyond the zongzi and homemade frozen dumplings. However, the mention of "great Chinese home food" suggests that Zongzi House likely offers other familiar and comforting Chinese dishes that align with a home-style cooking approach. These could include simple stir-fries, rice dishes, or soups that complement their specialty zongzi. To get a full understanding of their menu, local users are encouraged to visit the restaurant or contact them directly.

Customer Reviews
By the time I got here, a little after 2pm, they were sold out of the Zongzi I wanted. The owner had 2 vegetarian ones left and he offered them to me. It had tofu, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and a chestnut inside of rice that was steamed. It tasted really good and made me full and I only ate one.
Great Chinese home food with delicious meat and vegetarian options! The vegetarian (tofu, mushroom, and peanuts) and red date zongzi are amazing. Zongzi is served fresh, and homemade frozen dumplings are also available. They seem to run out of zongzi types sometimes so maybe call beforehand if you want something in particular.
Came here at 6:50pm on a Sunday and they were closed, even though the sign said "open." They were great in the past when they were open. Also, prices have DOUBLED in the past year. Update July 2 2021: now indefinitely CLOSED
Updated 09/21/2020 Quality of dumplings is no longer the same. Skin is no longer bouncy or chewy but is now thin with no elasticity. More than half of the dumplings came out with broken skin. No complaint about the raise in price from $8 to $10 for the pork dumplings but will not return for the quality. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Tried the cabbage and pork dumplings (高麗菜豬肉水餃) and rice dumplings with salty egg yolk (鹹蛋黃肉粽). I'd highly recommend both. The cabbage in the dumplings has the crunch and the meat taste fresh. Flavoring of the dumpling filling is light making them kid friendly. Some dipping sauce makes them perfect. The bouncy, slightly chewy skin is by far the best I've had anywhere in the Bay Area. The rice dumplings are huge w lots of meat filling. The meat tastes fresh and tender. The salty egg yolks look like they came off real whole salty eggs instead of factory processed bag of egg yolks. Really good flavoring, not as light as the cabbage and pork dumplings but just right. Will definitely return to try more items. Last but not least, the owners who I believe are husband and wife were quite nice. Ms. Eng (I think) popped head head from behind the fridge and offered us microwaving tips for the rice dumplings.
The zongzi were perfect - almost exactly as grandma would have made it. Not super saturated with salt like you would normally find them in restaurants. The dumplings were yummy too. Definitely hits the spot!
