About Zhangliang Malatang Champaign 张亮麻辣烫(原GG BOWL)

Zhangliang Malatang Champaign 张亮麻辣烫, formerly known as GG BOWL, located at 607 S 6th St, Champaign, IL 61820, USA, presents a customizable Chinese hot pot dining experience to local users. As a Chinese restaurant specializing in Malatang and Malaxiangguo, it allows diners to create their own unique dishes by selecting from a wide array of ingredients.

According to one customer, the restaurant offers an incredible selection of flavors for both Malatang (a spicy numbing soup) and Malaxiangguo (a dry spicy stir-fry). The ingredients, including meats, fresh vegetables, and noodles, are displayed for customers to choose exactly what they want. These ingredients are reportedly always super fresh, and the broths are described as rich and flavorful, catering to both spicy and mild preferences.

However, other customer experiences present significant concerns. One reviewer found the value to be extremely poor compared to other restaurants, citing a high cost based on weight ($15 per pound) and a suspicion regarding the accuracy of the weighing process. This resulted in a significantly higher bill than expected for a small amount of food. Additionally, a $1 upcharge for rice and an extra fee for credit card payments were mentioned as negatives.

The service model is described as self-service, where customers receive a vibrating token to collect their food at the counter and are responsible for clearing their own dishes. This was perceived as not aligning with the high cost. Parking was also reported as inconvenient, requiring payment a couple of blocks away.

Furthermore, a serious concern regarding cross-contamination was raised, with a customer alleging that the same tongs are used for raw meats, fish, vegetables, and tofu, potentially leading to hygiene issues. This reviewer expressed a strong negative reaction to their experience and stated they would not return.

In summary, Zhangliang Malatang Champaign offers a customizable hot pot experience with a wide selection of fresh ingredients and flavorful broths. However, potential customers should be aware of concerns raised regarding pricing, value, service model, additional charges, parking inconvenience, and allegations of cross-contamination.

One of my absolute favorite spots in town! This restaurant offers an incredible selection of flavors for Malatang and Malaxiangguo. All the ingredients are laid out beautifully, allowing you to pick exactly what you want – from meats to fresh vegetables and noodles. The ingredients are always super fresh and the broths are rich and flavorful. Whether you're craving something spicy or mild, there's something to choose from.

I've never been to a restaurant like this, and not in a good way. In terms of value, this was at the bottom of the list from literally every single restaurant I've ever eaten at. There was nowhere to park, I was forced to pay two blocks down the road to park my car. They charge $15 a pound and I swear they weighed the bowl or something without zeroing the scale. Very little food, somehow came out to 2 pounds. It was $30 per person, so $60, plus tax. Rice was a $1 upcharge. They charge you an additional fee if you want to pay with a credit card (pass the expense off on the consumer). Cash payment will lower your bill for obvious reasons. They still ask for a tip if you pay with a credit card on top of all the additional charges. The service here amounts to responding to a vibrating token, then you go get your food at the front counter. When you are done eating, you carry your dishes and place them into a receptacle that houses them. The total bill for 2 bowls was almost $70. This is the only restaurant I've been to where I lost my appetite in disappointment at purchase. The value here is lacking. Also, when you are picking your food, you use tongs to touch various red meats and fish, then you use the same tongs to touch vegetables and tofu later on. There is cross contamination galore and you will definitely experience the results later on when you make it to the bathroom. I will never return to this restaurant ever again in my life.

This is my favorite restaurant on campus! I love dry hot pot, and my partner and I go to GG Bowl every few weeks. The people working at the restaurant are really nice, especially if you are unsure what to order or are unfamiliar with this type of Chinese food. When you enter the restaurant, you will see an array of meats, noodles, and vegetables. You grab a bowl, and you fill it up with anything you like. Everything is paid by weight. My favorite things to add to my bowl are beef, imitation crab, fish balls, spam, quail eggs, and every vegetable possible, aha. I also love the fresh noodles you can add! In addition, there's a sauce bar. I always get sesame sauce, chili oil, and a ton of garlic. Yum! There are different types of soups/stir fry available, but my favorite is the Ma La Xiang Guo (Spicy Numbing Stir-fry Pot). To me, it tastes better than normal hot pot. My favorite!

Not even a first time. It was my second time that I discovered the same black plastic inside their food. I just had a second bite when I discovered the plastic. Several months ago, when I first found out the plastic in my food, they didn't even ask me for a refund, but they just asked me to make it again. Ok, I assumed that mistakes can happen sometimes. Second time, I almost cracked my molar tooth. I was very upset and asked for a refund or whatever, the lady infront of the cashier handed me two bottles of their soda to retrieve my feelings and refunded me with a cash. I didn't think it was still right, since it was the same exact plastic that was inside the food few months ago and now. I talked with the owner and he promised me to compensate the cost for the dental fee but he never answered my text or call. I think the owner will know why I would leave the review, cuz you didn't respond to my text accordingly at the timely matter. I know this owner owns other places in green st, so be aware. I am just amazed how this store would not even take care and just hand out customers to consume unsafe foods.
