About Zen Noodle Bar
Zen Noodle Bar, situated at 668 E 3rd Ave in San Mateo, California, positions itself within the "Chinese Restaurant" category, offering a selection of noodle-based dishes and other Chinese culinary items. With contact numbers (650) 781-3183 and +1 650-781-3183, this establishment has garnered initial reactions from local diners, providing insights into its offerings and dining experience.
According to one customer, Zen Noodle Bar is a "small place" that serves "good" food at a "fair" price. This reviewer specifically enjoyed the **Pork Belly Noodle Soup**, as well as the **Combination Noodle Soup** and **Beef Wraps**, stating that all were "very good" and expressing an intention to return. This positive feedback suggests that some of the noodle dishes at Zen Noodle Bar are well-received and offer a satisfying meal.
However, another customer's experience presented a contrasting perspective. This reviewer had anticipated trying Zen Noodle Bar due to its menu featuring "lots of classic Szechuan dishes." They sampled the **Spicy Beef Noodle Soup** and the **Beef Wrap**, but found both dishes to be "overly sweet" and sharing a "foul taste of cheap vegetable oil." Furthermore, they noted a lack of authentic Szechuan peppercorn numbing spice and a general absence of spiciness in the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. Despite these criticisms of the food, this reviewer did commend the service as "good," highlighting a positive aspect of the dining experience.
The discrepancy in these two reviews suggests a potential variability in the preparation or quality of dishes, or perhaps differing palates and expectations among customers. While one diner found the food to be good and the price fair, another who was specifically looking for authentic Szechuan flavors was disappointed with the sweetness and the perceived quality of ingredients in certain dishes.
Based on the available information, it is challenging to definitively describe the environment of Zen Noodle Bar beyond it being a "small place." The focus of the reviews is primarily on the food and service rather than the ambiance or decor. It is reasonable to assume that the restaurant provides a functional space for diners to enjoy their meals, but further details are not available.
In terms of services, Zen Noodle Bar likely offers dine-in options, allowing customers to enjoy their meals on-site. The positive mention of "good" service by one reviewer indicates that the staff is attentive and helpful. It is also common for noodle bars and similar establishments to offer takeout services, catering to customers who prefer to eat elsewhere. To confirm the availability of takeout or delivery options, interested individuals may need to contact the restaurant directly.
The features of Zen Noodle Bar appear to include a menu with a variety of noodle soups and wraps, with some dishes drawing inspiration from classic Szechuan cuisine. The Pork Belly Noodle Soup and Beef Wraps seem to be popular choices among some customers. However, the feedback regarding the authenticity of the Szechuan dishes and the potential for an overly sweet flavor profile is a point to consider for those specifically seeking genuine Szechuan flavors.
Currently, there is no promotional information available in the provided customer reviews. Local users interested in Zen Noodle Bar may want to check online platforms or contact the restaurant directly to inquire about any ongoing specials or promotions.
In conclusion, Zen Noodle Bar in San Mateo offers a range of noodle dishes, including the positively reviewed Pork Belly Noodle Soup and Beef Wraps. While its menu includes classic Szechuan items, at least one customer found these dishes to lack authentic Szechuan flavors and to be overly sweet, also noting a perceived issue with the quality of cooking oil. The service was noted as good by one reviewer. Potential customers may want to consider these mixed reviews when deciding whether to visit and perhaps inquire about specific dishes or preparation methods if they have particular flavor preferences or expectations, especially regarding Szechuan cuisine.

Small place, food was good. Price is fair. We had pork belly noddle soup, loved it. Combination noodle soup, beef wraps. All very good. Will go back again..
I was excited to try Zen Noodle Bar because the menu has lots of classic Szechuan dishes. I had the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup and Beef Wrap. Both dishes were overly sweet and had the same foul taste of cheap vegetable oil. The Spicy Beef Noodle Soup didn't have any Szechuan peppercorn numbing spice, or really any spiciness at all. The service was good, so I do appreciate that!
It’s pretty good food for takeout. The dumplings are tasty and juicy. I like the fried dumplings and the wonton dumplings.
This is a solid shanghainese joint. Weird that they don't have xlbs but they do have Shanghai fried noodles, Shanghai rice cake, string beans, beef pancakes, spicy wontons and SJBs. I'd have to say all the food was solid with the spicy wontons being a standout. Overall wasn't the most amazing Shanghai food I've ever had, but on the peninsula this is a solid pick. The decor is odd and looks like it was converted from like a deli. I'm guessing most people order Togo. But the service was decent and the server was friendly. Would definitely come back here again.
A fairly affordable, filling place to scratch your Asian noodle itch (with extra dim sum options on top!) The beef noodle soup special and pork buns are very filling and done well. While it may not be the most authentic, this place hits the spot for coziness, decent service, and prices around $10-14. Warning: the parking lot is tight, and it may be easier to park on the street during peak hours.
