Zen Gardens aims to offer a variety of Chinese-inspired dishes for both dine-in and takeout customers. Customer reviews for Zen Gardens present a mixed picture, with some patrons expressing high satisfaction with certain aspects of the food, while others report significant issues with order accuracy, portion sizes, and customer service. One reviewer had a particularly positive experience, stating that the crab Rangoon was "the best" they had ever had at any Chinese restaurant. They also enjoyed the beef with broccoli and the beef and vegetable rice noodles, noting that all the food was "extremely tasty" and did not require additional sauces. This customer also mentioned a positive experience with a strawberry smoothie and indicated their intention to return, suggesting that Zen Gardens is capable of producing well-received dishes and beverages.
In stark contrast, another customer recounted a "terrible experience" involving a significant error with their order. They had ordered sesame seed chicken but were served orange chicken instead, which lacked sesame seeds and clearly tasted like orange chicken. Despite pointing out the mistake, the staff reportedly insisted that it was the correct order. This led to a frustrating exchange where the staff refused to provide a refund but eventually allowed the customer to choose a different dish. This interaction highlights a serious concern regarding order accuracy and the handling of customer complaints.
The second dish ordered by the dissatisfied customer was teriyaki chicken on a stick, which they found to have a "shockingly small" portion size, estimated to be about half of what they expected. Overall, this reviewer found the food to be "disappointing" and the service to be "even worse," concluding that their experience was "definitely not worth the hassle." This negative feedback raises concerns about both the quality and quantity of some of Zen Gardens' offerings, as well as the responsiveness and professionalism of their staff when addressing order issues.
As a Chinese restaurant, Zen Gardens likely offers a diverse menu featuring a range of popular dishes. Based on the reviews, this includes appetizers like crab Rangoon, classic entrees such as beef with broccoli and sesame seed chicken (or orange chicken, in one instance), noodle dishes like beef and vegetable rice noodles, and potentially other items like teriyaki chicken on a stick. The positive review suggests that some of these dishes can be exceptionally tasty when prepared correctly. However, the negative review indicates potential inconsistencies in order fulfillment and portion sizes, which could significantly impact the customer experience.
Information regarding the environment of Zen Gardens is limited in the provided reviews. One reviewer mentioned a positive experience with the food and a smoothie but did not comment on the ambiance. The reviewer who had a negative experience focused solely on the issues with their order and service. Therefore, it is difficult to ascertain the atmosphere and cleanliness of the restaurant based on this information alone. Local users interested in dining in may need to seek additional online reviews or contact the restaurant directly for more details about the dining environment.
In terms of services, Zen Gardens offers both dine-in and takeout options, as implied by the customer reviews. The positive reviewer dined in and also ordered a smoothie, suggesting a full-service experience for on-site customers. The negative reviewer's experience involved a takeout order that was incorrect, highlighting a potential area for improvement in their order fulfillment process. The handling of the order error, with the initial insistence that the wrong dish was correct and the subsequent refusal to provide a refund, raises concerns about their customer service practices. The availability of both a phone number and a mobile phone number facilitates easy ordering and contact with the restaurant.
The features of Zen Gardens are somewhat contradictory based on the available reviews. A potential positive feature is the exceptional quality of certain dishes, such as the crab Rangoon, and the overall good taste of some of their entrees, as reported by one customer. The availability of smoothies might also be a unique offering. However, significant negative features include issues with order accuracy (serving orange chicken instead of sesame seed chicken), potentially small portion sizes for some items (teriyaki chicken on a stick), and unsatisfactory customer service when addressing order errors. These inconsistencies make it challenging to define the reliable features of Zen Gardens.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information mentioned in the provided data. To learn about any special offers, discounts, or new menu items that Zen Gardens might be featuring, it is best to contact the restaurant directly via phone or check if they have any online presence where such information might be shared. Local residents in South Burlington considering Zen Gardens should be aware of the recent contrasting experiences reported by other customers. While some dishes may be highly enjoyable, there are also potential risks of order errors, smaller-than-expected portions, and difficulties in resolving issues with the staff.
In conclusion, Zen Gardens in South Burlington, VT, presents a complex picture based on recent customer reviews. While one patron raved about the exceptional crab Rangoon and the tasty entrees, another reported a "terrible experience" involving an incorrect order, an uncooperative staff, and a surprisingly small portion size. This stark contrast suggests a potential lack of consistency in both food preparation and customer service. Local users considering Zen Gardens should weigh these differing experiences. For the most current information on their menu, services, and any potential promotions, contacting the restaurant directly at (802) 862-8885 or +1 802-862-8885 is recommended. Customers might find some dishes to be outstanding, but there is also a risk of encountering issues with order accuracy and service.

Customer Reviews
These were the best crab Rangoon I have ever had at any Chinese place. We also ordered beef, broccoli, and some beef and vegetable rice noodles. All of our food needed no additional sauces to eat as it was extremely tasty. I also ordered a strawberry smoothie and will definitely be going back.
Terrible experience! I ordered sesame seed chicken and was served orange chicken instead. There were no sesame seeds on it, and it very clearly tasted like orange chicken, but the staff insisted it was what I ordered. After a lot of back and forth, they refused to give me a refund but grudgingly let me choose something else. I then ordered teriyaki chicken on a stick, and the portion was shockingly small – about half of what I should’ve received. Overall, the food was disappointing, and the service was even worse. Definitely not worth the hassle.
Only ordered takeout, but seems like a really nice, comfortable place. Coworker and I agreed it was delicious, and another coworker went back for seconds on the crab rangoons!
Delicious food, a pleasant atmosphere, and friendly service contributed to a great meal. The artistic flower carrot was the proverbial cherry on top. Great option for families and the food arrives quickly.
For this area of VT, this is one of the better Chinese restaurants. Anywhere else, with a sizable Chinese population, I’d give it a 2.5-3. But that’s VT…. Don’t even think about getting Mexican food in the area—though that may be changing. Wish the same were true for Chinese. It’s a shame that A Single Pebble’s original owner isn’t still running the place. They (Single Pebble) used to be very good, roughly 25 years ago (especially when they were in Barre). Not sure why anyone eats there (single pebble) now. The past few times I tried eating there (single pebble), the food was inedible. So much sodium you couldn’t taste the ingredients; and over-sauced, with snotty, tasteless pools of cornstarch-thickened slime (single pebble).
