About Year of the Fortune Chinese
Welcome to Year of the Fortune Chinese, a local establishment situated at 431 E St, San Diego, CA 92101, USA. Operating as a Chinese restaurant in the heart of San Diego, Year of the Fortune Chinese aims to offer a variety of Chinese dishes to the local community and visitors. Located on E Street, it provides a convenient option for those seeking Chinese cuisine in the downtown area. You can contact them by phone at (619) 635-7180 or via mobile at +1 619-635-7180 for inquiries or to place an order.
Based on recent customer feedback, the environment at Year of the Fortune Chinese appears to be somewhat dynamic. One reviewer noted that there was a party occurring during their visit, resulting in a "super loud" atmosphere. This suggests that the restaurant may also function as a venue for events or gatherings, which could impact the general dining ambiance. This customer also mentioned being seated upstairs and noted a "weird smell" throughout the place, likening it to a "bad diffuser smell." This aspect of the environment might be a concern for some diners. The same reviewer also speculated that the establishment seemed "more like a drinking spot than an eating spot," indicating a potential dual focus or a particular emphasis on its bar service.
Year of the Fortune Chinese offers both dine-in and takeout services. One customer who dined in mentioned that the waiter delivered the food but did not return to refill their water, suggesting potential inconsistencies in table service. However, the manager was noted to have interacted with the customers and addressed a concern about a dish being too salty by offering to remake it and ultimately removing it from the bill, indicating a willingness to resolve customer issues. Despite this positive interaction with the manager, the overall dine-in experience for this reviewer was not compelling enough for a return visit. Conversely, the same reviewer stated they would consider ordering takeout for themselves in the future, suggesting that the quality of the food might be better suited for off-site consumption.
A notable feature of Year of the Fortune Chinese, based on one of the reviews, is the presence of an "orange cauliflower" dish, which was the primary reason for one customer's visit and was described as "good" in flavor, although some larger pieces were reportedly undercooked. This suggests that while some dishes might be well-received, there could be inconsistencies in preparation. Another dish ordered was the "Mongolian beef," which was described as "super salty," indicating a potential issue with the seasoning of certain menu items. Additionally, one concerning feature mentioned by a customer was the unexpected charge of a "cost of living fee" added to their bill, which is not a standard practice in most restaurants and could be off-putting to patrons.
Another customer review painted a significantly negative picture of the food quality, describing it as "the absolute worst, most low quality Chinese food I've ever had the dissatisfaction of eating." This starkly contrasts with the slightly more positive assessment of the orange cauliflower by another reviewer, highlighting a potential inconsistency in the quality of different dishes or a highly subjective dining experience. This reviewer also claimed that the photos of the food on Uber Eats were misleading, suggesting a discrepancy between the advertised and actual appearance of the dishes, which they labeled as "literally a scam." The reference to an "attached" item in this review implies further negative evidence or commentary, although the content of this attachment is not provided.

For local users in San Diego seeking a Chinese restaurant in the E Street area, Year of the Fortune Chinese offers dine-in and takeout services. However, it is important to be aware of the recent customer feedback, which presents a mixed picture. One reviewer experienced a loud environment due to a party and reported a strange smell, along with issues of undercooked food and inattentive service, despite a positive interaction with the manager regarding a salty dish. Another reviewer expressed extreme dissatisfaction with the food quality and accused the online representations of being misleading. The unexpected "cost of living fee" is also a factor that potential customers should be aware of.
As a Chinese restaurant in downtown San Diego, Year of the Fortune Chinese is located in a potentially vibrant area. However, the reviews suggest that the dining experience might be inconsistent. The establishment appears to function not only as a restaurant but possibly also as a bar or event space, which could influence the atmosphere. While one specific dish (orange cauliflower) received a somewhat positive review, others (Mongolian beef) were criticized. The significant negative review regarding overall food quality and the discrepancy with online images should also be taken into consideration by potential diners.
Local residents looking for a Chinese restaurant in the vicinity might consider Year of the Fortune Chinese for its location and the availability of takeout. However, the reported issues with the dine-in environment, food quality, service attentiveness, and the unexpected fee warrant caution. It may be prudent to inquire about the preparation of specific dishes when ordering takeout and to be prepared for a potentially loud atmosphere and additional charges if dining in. The starkly contrasting reviews suggest that individual experiences may vary significantly.
In conclusion, Year of the Fortune Chinese, located at 431 E St in San Diego, CA, offers Chinese cuisine with dine-in and takeout services. Recent customer reviews indicate potential concerns regarding the dining environment (noise, smell), food quality (undercooked items, excessive saltiness, overall low quality), service attentiveness, and unexpected charges (cost of living fee). While one dish received moderate praise, other feedback is significantly negative, including accusations of misleading online representations. Potential customers should consider these factors and perhaps exercise caution or inquire further before dining in or ordering takeout. For any specific inquiries or promotional information, please contact them directly at (619) 635-7180.

Customer Reviews
Came in with a coworker. There was a party going on and it was super loud. Got sat upstairs. But the whole place had a weird smell. It's like a bad defuser smell. I ordered the orange cauliflower, which was the whole reason we went. It was good. The bigger pieces weren't cooked all the way, but the flavor was good. My friend ordered the Mongolian beef and said it was super salty. The waiter came and dropped off the food but didn't refill my water. I am assuming It was the manager who asked us how we were doing, when my friend told him that his meal was salty he asked if he wanted him to make it again. He said no and the mananger ended up taking it off the bill so that was nice. Would I go again. No. Would I order take out for myself, yes. Seems more like a drinking spot than an eating spot. To top it off, they charge a cost of living fee onto your bill.
Just the absolute worst, most low quality Chinese food I've ever had the dissatisfaction of eating. Photos on Uber Eats are nothing like their actual dishes. Literally a scam. See attached.
Such a great new place! Delicious food and drinks! Great atmosphere and everyone was very friendly. I had the chow mein (my favorite), great orange chicken, and wonton soup. I’ll definitely be back!
We celebrated my friend's birthday at Year of the Fortune and it was an amazing experience from start to finish! The staff went above and beyond, even helping me decorate the table beforehand, which I really appreciated. The bartender was incredible—not only were the drinks great, but he came by to entertain our table with some magic tricks, which was such a cool touch and had everyone laughing. The owner came by to thank us for choosing his restaurant and it was a nice touch to be able to support a local small business. LOVED the upstairs vibe A lot of us work in the industry, so we’re pretty picky, but every single one of us had a great time. The decor is super fun, and the vibe strikes the perfect balance between cozy and special—it’s welcoming without feeling too stuffy. The bathrooms are also a hidden gem for photo ops, and we got some really cool shots in there. The menu was uncomplicated but had something for everyone, the prices were just right, and everything felt like a treat without breaking the bank. This place is such a great find, and I’ll definitely be back!
This is a new restaurant, and they are still working out some of the kinks. Overall, it is very affordable and has an interesting vibe. But the restaurant is a very casual dining experience. We saw this was a new restaurant that seemed to be getting good reviews, so we thought we would check it out. I do not want to be overly harsh because it is a new restaurant. But they have some areas they can improve in. The waiter was often unsure of what dishes had in them or if they had certain items that were on the menu. It also took them a little bit of time to wait on us. But they were very nice and tried to be attentive to our needs. The food is flavorful, but definitely on the spicy side. I enjoy spicy food, so this was less of an issue, but for some people, it can be a problem. While the Kung pao chicken was delicious, the orange chicken was cold when it arrived to our table. The portions were huge and you definitely get your moneys worth. On top of that, it is reasonably cheap. The atmosphere was very funky and had lots of colors and levels, but felt rather cheap. There was also a funky smell when we got there that was not really pleasant. I think I walked into it with the perspective that it was going to be a more upscale restaurant, but it turned out being a bit more of a casual dining experience.
