About Xi'an Famous Foods 西安名吃 | Financial District
Xi'an Famous Foods 西安名吃 is a Chinese restaurant located at 8 Liberty Pl in the Financial District of New York City. Situated within a vibrant and bustling area, this branch of Xi'an Famous Foods offers a taste of authentic Northwestern Chinese cuisine, specializing in dishes that are known for their bold flavors, hand-ripped noodles, and generous use of spices. As part of the Chinese restaurant category, Xi'an Famous Foods distinguishes itself by focusing on the culinary traditions of the Xi'an region in China, providing a unique dining experience for local users seeking flavors beyond the typical Cantonese-American fare.
Based on the available customer reviews, the Financial District location of Xi'an Famous Foods is appreciated for its efficient service and the quality of its dishes. One local resident, who orders takeout from this location periodically, highlighted the speed of service, noting that their order placed at the kiosk was ready in under 10 minutes. This efficiency makes it a convenient option for those working or living in the area looking for a quick and satisfying meal.
The reviewer specifically praised two dishes: the Spicy & Tingly Beef Muscle Hand-Ripped Noodles (ordered extra spicy) and the Spicy Asian Cucumber Salad. Both were described as delicious. Interestingly, the reviewer, who typically has a low tolerance for spice, found the "extra spicy" version of the noodles to be manageable, suggesting a nuanced approach to heat that still allows the flavors of the dish to shine through. This indicates that while the restaurant offers spicy options, they might be approachable even for those with a milder palate, or perhaps the spice level can be adjusted.
Another customer enthusiastically described Xi'an Famous Foods as "a find!" and specifically mentioned that the noodles and dumplings were great. Their positive experience was such that if they were staying closer to the Financial District (rather than near Central Park), they would have returned the following day. This strong endorsement speaks to the quality and appeal of the restaurant's signature items. The mention of "noodles and dumplings" suggests that these are key offerings that customers have found particularly enjoyable.
Furthermore, this reviewer echoed a sentiment found in other feedback about Xi'an Famous Foods, referring to it as a "great dive place." This description implies a casual and perhaps unpretentious environment, focusing more on the authenticity and flavor of the food rather than elaborate decor or formal seating. This casual atmosphere might appeal to those seeking a genuine and less touristy dining experience, where the emphasis is on the taste and quality of the Northwestern Chinese specialties.
Regarding services, the first reviewer mentioned ordering at a kiosk, indicating a streamlined and potentially self-service approach for ordering, especially for takeout. The quick preparation time further supports the idea of efficient service, catering to the fast-paced environment of the Financial District. While pets are generally not allowed, the reviewer was permitted to bring their small dog inside briefly to place and pick up their order, suggesting a degree of flexibility or perhaps a pragmatic approach to accommodating customers briefly. However, this should not be interpreted as a pet-friendly establishment in general.
The primary feature of Xi'an Famous Foods is undoubtedly its focus on Northwestern Chinese cuisine, specifically from the Xi'an region. This culinary tradition is known for its distinctive flavors, often featuring hand-pulled or hand-ripped noodles with a chewy texture, flavorful broths or sauces, and the use of spices like cumin and chili. The "Spicy & Tingly Beef Muscle Hand-Ripped Noodles" mentioned in the review is a prime example of this style, highlighting the signature hand-ripped noodles and the bold, spicy flavors characteristic of Xi'an cuisine. The inclusion of a "Spicy Asian Cucumber Salad" also points to the use of fresh, flavorful, and often spicy side dishes that complement the richer noodle and meat offerings.
The positive feedback on both the noodles and the dumplings suggests that these are must-try items for anyone visiting Xi'an Famous Foods. Dumplings are another staple of Chinese cuisine, and their positive reception here indicates quality and authentic preparation. The combination of flavorful noodles, well-made dumplings, and spicy side dishes creates a compelling culinary profile that sets this restaurant apart.
The "great dive place" descriptor also hints at a no-frills environment where the focus is squarely on the food. This can be a significant feature for those who prioritize authenticity and taste over ambiance. It suggests a place where the quality of the cooking speaks for itself, and the atmosphere is secondary to the dining experience.

This location is close to my place and I order takeout from time to time. I placed my order at the kiosk and waited less than 10 minutes for my food to be ready. I ordered the Spicy & Tingly Beef Muscle Hand-Ripped Noodles (extra spicy) and Spicy Asian Cucumber Salad. Both dishes were delicious, and surprisingly, the extra spicy for the noodles weren’t bad at all esp given I have a low tolerance for spice. Pets aren’t allowed but I was able to carry my pup in to order and grab my food.
What a find! Noodles and dumplings were great! If we weren't staying near Central Park we would definitely come here again tomorrow. Great dive place like others have mentioned.
Great takeout Chinese food. Hits all the right spots and the staff was very friendly and helped us understand the menu and what’s available. Would definitely drop by again for a quick meal. Can’t believe how cheaply you can get hand pulled noodles. Would particularly recommend the spicy lamb noodles
My must visit whenever I’m in the city. It’s close to my hotel so I made it my first stop after I settled in. The beef shank noodle is of the perfect spicy/hot without burning my tastebud. The liang pi is of perfect texture which I’m addicted to….
Amazing, SHARE BETWEEN TWO! I had the cumin spiced lamb hand-pulled noodles and the tofu custard. Both were absolutely divine! Seriously, the absolute best Chinese! 10/10, no notes. I will definitely be coming back. Great value for money. The food is fantastic but the portions are massive - big enough to share between two, comfortably. It's not the nicest place to sit, but for the flavour and the price, it's worth it. Tip: if you're by yourself, the leftovers keep well!
