About Wheat Bay (成都名小吃) Uniquely Chengdu

Wheat Bay (成都名小吃) Uniquely Chengdu is a Chinese restaurant located at 830 E 13th Ave St in Eugene, Oregon, specializing in Sichuan cuisine. Situated near the University campus, it offers a casual and quick dining experience for those seeking authentic flavors from the Chengdu region.

Based on customer reviews, Wheat Bay provides a no-frills environment focused on delivering genuine Chinese food. A key characteristic of their cuisine is its spiciness, a hallmark of Sichuan cooking, often featuring Sichuan peppercorns that create a unique tingly sensation. Customers sensitive to spice are advised to choose dishes without peppers or request a milder preparation.

Popular dishes include the Kung Pao chicken, praised for its authentic Sichuan peppercorns and spicy kick, and the orange chicken, noted as a comforting fried chicken option. Other dishes mentioned are the garlic broccoli, sesame chicken with noodles, and the griddle-cooked boneless chicken. One reviewer highlighted the adventurous nature of the griddle-cooked boneless chicken, which contained ingredients like beef tongue and quail eggs.

While most reviewers found the food delicious, one noted a slightly slimy texture in the sauce of the garlic broccoli, attributing it to possible cornstarch. Overall, Wheat Bay (成都名小吃) Uniquely Chengdu is recommended for those looking for a taste of authentic and often spicy Sichuan cuisine in Eugene, offering a diverse menu with quick service and reasonable prices.

Fun and quick Sichuan place next to University campus. Prices are good and food came out fast. I recommend the Kung Pao chicken, it has the Sichuan peppercorns and the tingly spicy bite! The orange chicken is a good option if you’re craving comfort food in the form of fried chicken.

No frills and very authentic Chinese food. It definitely is spicy so if you’re not good with spice, make sure to avoid anything on the menu with the peppers and even then, ask for it to be made less spicy. You’ve been warned ;) We got the garlic broccoli (O12), the sesame chicken with noodles (E4), and the griddle cooked boneless chicken (L4). We planned to share everything but the L4 dish had beef (we think) tongue, quail eggs, and all sorts of other pieces of things, we weren’t sure. Luckily my boyfriend is adventurous and loved it. I enjoyed the sesame chicken which was straightforward. The broccoli was good too but I think the sauce/oil had some corn starch in it and made it have a bit of a somewhat slimy texture at the end of the me. But truly the food was so delicious—I’m just pointing these things out because I feel it wouldn’t be fair to leave out those details. I would definitely come back here and recommend this place for lunch/dinner in Eugene.

Food was delicious however the menu available in the restaurant is different from what was shown in their website. We were passing by Eugene and found this spot. Overall food was pretty good and very generous portions although I was surprised the entrees don’t come with rice, you need to order rice separately.

Food/Taste/Flavor: 4/5 - spicy beef noodle soup (D4) and spicy hotpot noodle soup (D9). The food was good overall but the chili oil does cover the taste of the broth a bit. We were slight confused by the raw SPAM like protein in the hotpot soup as it didn’t quite fit the rest of the dish. Ambience: 4/5 - spacious shop with large windows that lets you people watch as you enjoy your meal. The store does feel older or the decorations isn’t kept up well. Service: 2/5 - only one lady managing the front of the store but she disappears to the back quite often. When we walked into the shop we weren’t quite sure if we were supposed to order at the front or sit at a table so we awkwardly stood and waited for about 2/3 minutes before she came back to the front. After we sat, she gave us a little pad and told us to write down what we wanted then walked away. There’s a sign that says they’re trying to save paper so pay at the cash register. We stood for about 3/4 before she came back up to address us. As I went through the payment process, I tried to input my phone number to get a receipt and she cancelled or rushed the prompt which doesn’t allow me to finish the process. I then asked for a physical receipt and she became a bit flustered trying to state they don’t print receipts. She did end up providing a copy! Value for price: 4/5 - decent food, reasonable price, but didn’t quite care for the service.

Tbh I really think this is the best Szechuan restaurant in Oregon, even tho they kinda change the way to make dry pot that I don’t like, and their hot pot is kinda normal, but it’s all you can eat! Their BBQ ribs is amazing, boiling fish too! Never gonna miss their garlic fired vegetables, be best I can find in Oregon so far. I will always ask a box of peanuts to go, it’s nice little snacks if you don’t want something heavy while you want some snack :))
