About Wan Kee Restaurant

Located at 2152 Mission St in the vibrant Mission District of San Francisco, situated between 17th and 18th streets, Wan Kee Restaurant presents itself as a Chinese Restaurant specializing in "Chinese comfort food." Based on customer reviews, Wan Kee operates in a clean diner setting, offering a buffet-style selection of dishes where customers can choose their food by the item. A notable feature is the restaurant's practice of cooking food constantly and replacing it in small portions, suggesting an effort to maintain freshness and avoid large quantities sitting for extended periods.

Wan Kee Restaurant offers both dine-in and take-out options, catering to different preferences and needs. For those looking for a quick and easy meal, the take-out service provides a convenient way to enjoy their Chinese comfort food at home or on the go. The availability of seating inside suggests a casual dining environment where customers can enjoy their meal on-site.

One reviewer described Wan Kee as a "clean spot in the Mission," which is a positive attribute, especially in a busy urban environment. Cleanliness contributes significantly to a pleasant dining experience and reflects the restaurant's attention to hygiene (at least from one observer's perspective). The same reviewer also noted that the "food spread is nicely put together," suggesting an organized and appealing presentation of the buffet items, making it easy for customers to select their desired dishes.

However, a more concerning review presents a starkly different perspective regarding hygiene. A customer who ordered only steamed rice reported a disturbing discovery upon arriving home: what appeared to be a cat hair and a dirty black piece of glass-like material found inside the lid of their rice container. This is a serious allegation that raises significant questions about the restaurant's food handling and packaging procedures. The reviewer expressed disappointment and indicated an unwillingness to consume the rice or seek a refund, choosing instead to avoid confrontation. This incident, while based on a single report, should be noted by potential customers as a possible hygiene concern.

The term "Chinese comfort food" suggests a menu that likely includes familiar and well-loved dishes, perhaps with a focus on home-style recipes that are comforting and satisfying. While the specific dishes offered are not detailed in the provided reviews, the buffet-style service implies a variety of options, allowing customers to choose according to their preferences. The mention of food being cooked constantly and replaced in small portions suggests a focus on dishes that are typically served fresh and are best enjoyed hot.

The environment of Wan Kee Restaurant, as described by one reviewer as a "clean diner setting," likely implies a casual and functional space without elaborate decor. Diners can probably expect a straightforward and unpretentious atmosphere focused on the food and service. The availability of seating suggests that it's a place where people can comfortably enjoy a meal on-site, while the take-out option caters to those who prefer to eat elsewhere.

In terms of services, Wan Kee offers both dine-in and take-out. The buffet-style service allows for self-selection of food, which can be quick and efficient for customers who know what they want. The practice of frequently replenishing the food in small portions indicates an effort to serve fresh items. However, the negative review regarding the contaminated rice raises concerns about the thoroughness of their food preparation and packaging processes.

As no specific promotional information is mentioned in the provided reviews, local users interested in any special offers or discounts at Wan Kee Restaurant would need to contact them directly at (415) 861-4138 or +1 415-861-4138. They may also have daily specials or lunch deals that are not advertised online.

Given the conflicting nature of the two reviews – one praising the cleanliness and fresh food practices, and the other reporting a significant hygiene issue – it is challenging to form a definitive overall assessment of Wan Kee Restaurant. The positive review suggests a well-intentioned establishment focused on providing fresh, buffet-style Chinese comfort food in a clean environment. However, the negative review cannot be ignored, as it raises serious concerns about food safety and hygiene standards. Potential customers should consider both perspectives when deciding whether to dine at Wan Kee Restaurant.

For local users in the Mission District looking for a Chinese Restaurant offering comfort food with the convenience of a buffet and both dine-in and take-out options, Wan Kee Restaurant is located at a convenient spot on Mission Street. The practice of serving freshly cooked food in small batches is a potential advantage in terms of quality. However, the reported incident of contamination is a significant factor that should give potential diners pause. It might be prudent to exercise caution and perhaps seek more recent reviews or even consider a brief visit to assess the cleanliness and food handling practices before making a decision to eat there.

In conclusion, Wan Kee Restaurant in San Francisco's Mission District offers Chinese comfort food in a clean diner setting with a buffet-style service and both dine-in and take-out options. The restaurant emphasizes freshly cooked food served in small portions. However, a concerning customer review reported finding foreign objects in their take-out order, raising potential hygiene issues. Local users should consider both the positive aspects of convenience and fresh food practices alongside the serious hygiene concern when deciding whether to patronize Wan Kee Restaurant. Further investigation or more recent feedback might be helpful in making an informed decision.

I just went for some steamed rice. I don't think the lady there liked that I was only getting rice because when I got home and was getting ready to eat it I noticed, what looks like a cat hair and some dirty black piece of glass thing on the inside of the lid. Gross! Disappointed,I'm not going to eat it or ask for my three dollars back. I'm not going to argue with anyone today.

Great for vegetarians! Got a generous 3 item portion of noodles, vegetables, and egg rolls for $13. The staff is kind and the tables and bathrooms are clean. Music is a bit loud but it’s instrumental at least.

I just have two things to say, the lady at the front door is so kind and sweet, and the food is the best chinese food I’ve ever eaten, so savory. Highly recommend. (I am tourist and I found this place just walking)
