About Volcanic Sushi + Sake

Volcanic Sushi + Sake, situated at 5212 SW 91st Terrace A in Gainesville, within the Haile Village area, offers a menu featuring sushi and other Japanese dishes, along with a selection of sake. While categorized as a Chinese restaurant platform, its offerings are primarily Japanese.

One enthusiastic local customer declared Volcanic Sushi to be their favorite sushi spot in Gainesville. They highly recommended the "Alexander" and "Where is Wally" rolls (formerly known as the "Walter roll"), as well as the sampler. They also raved about the Dulce de Leche Volcanic Cake, describing it as so delicious that they forgot to photograph it.

However, another reviewer presented a more critical perspective, suggesting that Volcanic Sushi might be suitable for those with a smaller appetite and a higher budget. They provided specific pricing for some items, noting that a single piece of eel sushi was $7 and a shrimp tempura appetizer cost $14. In contrast, they found the Takoyaki ($10 for four small pieces with limited octopus) to be reasonably good, and the half-sized takeout container of Tom Kha Gai soup ($9) to be a highlight, praising its fresh, in-house taste and balanced sweet and savory flavors.

This reviewer felt that the eel sushi was overpriced for a single, small piece, and the shrimp tempura was underwhelming, resembling frozen supermarket fare. While acknowledging the appeal of hype, they suggested that the restaurant's location in a relatively affluent area might lead to a less competitive price-to-portion structure compared to other Asian restaurants in Gainesville.

The order accuracy and readiness upon arrival were noted as positive aspects. If you are in the Haile Village area of Gainesville and appreciate a potentially upscale sushi experience with some highly-regarded specialty rolls and desserts, Volcanic Sushi + Sake might be worth a visit. However, it's advisable to be mindful of the pricing and portion sizes, as some customers have found them less favorable compared to other options in the city.

This is my favorite Sushi by far in Gainesville. I ordered the Alexander and Where is Wally. It used to be called the Walter roll. The sampler was delicious too! I had the dulce de Leche volcanic cake. It was so good I forgot to take a picture of it.

If you have money to burn and a small appetite, I can wholeheartedly recommend Volcanic Sushi in the Haile Village. ❌ One (1) piece of eel sushi a la carte: $7. ❌ Shrimp tempura appetizer: $14. 👌 Takoyaki (Japanese snack consisting of ball of wheat flour batter cooked in a special pan and typically filled with octopus, pickled ginger, tempura scraps, and green onion): $10 👌 Half sized takeout soup container of Tom Kha Gai soup: $9 Order was accurate and ready upon my arrival. Eel sushi was not worth it. A roll, maybe, but not a singleton with a thin, lonely sliver of eel (nickel for scale), regardless of whether fresh rather than frozen. Shrimp tempura was outrageous, small sized and just like something straight from a convenient Asian market or even supermarket freezer case. Takoyaki had a few tiny morsels of octopus lurking within and was reasonably good, despite the mere four (4) sub ping pong ball sized pieces. Highlight was the soup, which struck me as made in house fresh and with pleasant mouth feel and a nice mixture of sweet and savory which meshed well and did not overpower either way. Other area Asian places have a more reasonable price for portion structure, and while hype is a thing which I totally get, I think the folks who live in the relatively pricey subdivisions surrounding Haile Village are a bit of a captive audience and being served as such.

Overall this place was good but not among my favorite Asian places in Gainesville. My friend and I ordered the crab Rangoon which was good, but in my opinion could have had more filling. I got the udon noodles with chicken. It was good but it wasn’t my favorite and I felt like there could have been a bigger portion size for the price. My friend got beef and shrimp fried rice which she enjoyed. The waitress gave us a lot of yum yum sauce which was nice. As for the service, it was pretty good. The restaurant was pretty empty when we went so we got our food quickly and the waiter was attentive and nice. The atmosphere in there is nice as well, it is clean and decorated. Overall I would say this place is decent and they have a lot of menu options

I had tried the location at hunters crossing and the food was always pretty good and fast service , this location was definitely not the same. It was very cold the night me and a group (with a 3 year old) went to eat there and we kept asking for the heaters to be turned on since we had to sit outside because we also had a dog. They kept forgetting and ended yo turning one on another table so we had to switch tables . Then the waitress kept forgetting or getting our orders wrong, they ran out of ingredients so had to change the food we ordered. It took 2 hours and everything came out at different times. Just a mess overall with mediocre food, the waitress was nice but she seemed very lost. Definitely not trying this one again.

Our server Ella was so sweet & amazing! She asked if we had been before & what brought us. We were picking up a cake from Sweet Paws for our dog’s first gotcha day & this was our first time in the area. We talked about dogs & she let us know that it was a dog friendly place & told us about the Farmer’s Market which I appreciated. She gave us menu recommendations that didn’t disappoint. The Crab Rangoon was delicious! We also got the lunch combos #2 & #5 - the beef teriyaki & all the sushi rolls were delicious. The outdoor seating area is adorable & it was so nice sitting out there. Even though she was the only server there at the time, she checked on us frequently, made sure we were good & kept our drinks full. Please give her some kind of recognition! We will definitely be back!
