Van Chans Chinese Restaurant

I don't know why this place has such bad reviews, I enjoyed the very filling meal. I tried their fried pork dumplings, vegetable egg roll and lunch size cashew chicken. Both the lunch entree and appetizer were enough for two, so they make sure you are full! Good amount of food for the money. The fried potsticker was actually very yummy with a nice soy based sauce on the side. The cashew chicken was just what I wanted, with that thickened cornstarch based brown sauce with real mushrooms, zucchini, chicken and loads of cashews. They didn't skimp on cashews or taste. Everything was tasty and totally what one is looking for as far as take out Chinese. Atmosphere - It is setup as a counter serve place, no waitresses at close to 4pm on a Sunday, instead you order at the register and take a seat anywhere. However there are burn or mildew stains on the kitchen walls facing the dining room so I couldn't give them 5 stars on atmosphere. Although I did enjoy the Chinese red and gold decor and shiney pretty tables.

Came in to what I think may have been their dinner rush. They were still pretty quick to get our food out. My favorite dish was the shrimp fried rice. It was hot and tasted fresh and had some great umami flavors. The hot n sour soup was a little on the thicker side and was a little cold when it came out. It was very hot nor sour. The orange chicken was good in the sauce however some of the chicken was a little on the drier side. The charbroiled chicken was also a little dry. Overall I enjoyed the foods flavor. Would like to try it out when they are less busy.

The fried rice was soggy - No egg and no vegetables but shriveled slices of carrots. The chicken was so hard to eat - overcooked covered in a thick layer of nasty batter, all soaking in what looked like oil. Didn't even try it. Definitely not coming back.

The restaurant is filthy. I wanted a hot tea and was handed a teabag and a Styrofoam cup. The hot water dispenser at the drink station was broken. They jiggled it and told me to wait 5 minutes but the water never heated up. While waiting, I noticed that the ice tea dispensers were filthy with crud, the soft drink machine was filthy, and the condiment station was absolutely nasty with dried crud everywhere. There were no customers in there so no excuse about being too busy to clean - it's like the staff didn't even notice the mess - plus this level of filth takes a long time to build up. The back booths are piled with supplies and stuff. If front of the house is this bad, I wonder how nasty the kitchen is? I hope the few bites of food I ate before I noticed the filth don't make me sick. I used to eat here but haven't been in awhile. I'm shocked and am posting so those who only order online will be forewarned about the conditions.

This place is not what it used to be. For starters the girl on the phone seemed distracted and unenthusiastic, I had to repeat my order multiple times and she still got my name wrong. As for the food, $40 for two meals that were unseasoned is not what I was expecting. We got the beef with vegetables that came with maybe 8pieces of meat total and the mixed veggies, with no baby corn (they charged me extra for that request..?) came with mostly bamboo shoot (picture shows amount in ONE order) cabbage and water chestnuts with a few pieces of broccoli thrown in there… lastly just to finish it up both of our fortune cookies were stale.. definitely will not be giving this place another try.
