About Uncle Zhang Chinese Cuisine

Uncle Zhang Chinese Cuisine is a Chinese restaurant located at 742 W 31st St in Chicago, IL 60616, USA. They can be contacted at (312) 842-9677 or +1 312-842-9677.

Based on recent customer reviews, the experiences at Uncle Zhang Chinese Cuisine appear to be varied. One customer reported a negative initial interaction upon arrival and dissatisfaction with their beef with scallions (served with white onions instead of green onions), the chewiness of the beef, cold rice, and lack of silverware and a glass for water. They described it as the worst Chinese food experience.

Another recurring point of feedback concerns the fried shrimp, which one reviewer stated had changed for the worse, with smaller shrimp and a different taste. This customer mentioned previously enjoying this dish.

In contrast, some customers have positive feedback. The rice is described as "really wonderful," maintaining its moistness and flavor even when cold. Dishes like the beef fried rice, eggplant in garlic sauce (noted for its spiciness due to fresh jalapeno slices), and seafood combo (praised for tender seafood) have been enjoyed by some. The braised eggplant is highlighted as a favorite, described as "fall apart in your mouth creamy and awesome."

However, not all dishes receive positive reviews. The beef and cilantro dish was liked by one but not by other family members. The shrimp rice noodle was described as "awful" and a waste, tasting primarily of ginger and soy sauce. The walnut mayo shrimp was noted for being watery and not creamy, and the green onion pancake was considered too starchy and dry by one reviewer, though a hit with their family.

One adventurous customer who tried various dishes, including pork stomach, intestines, and kidney, reported being mostly disappointed, suggesting the dishes might not have been saucy enough or perhaps not sufficiently "westernized" for their preference. Despite these mixed experiences, this reviewer indicated a likelihood of returning once a preferred dish is found.

An update mentions that the orange chicken contained "way too much orange peel."

Given the diverse range of opinions, it's difficult to ascertain a consistent experience at Uncle Zhang Chinese Cuisine. While some dishes and aspects are praised, others receive significant criticism. No information regarding the restaurant's environment, specific services beyond dine-in and potentially takeaway (implied by leftovers), features, or current promotional offers is available from these reviews.

Read carefully before considering eating at this place as soon as I walked in, a woman asked me how many people I said one and she gave me a dirty look. ordered beef with scallions, which are green onions they served it to me with regular white onions. could not even chew the beef had to spit it out would not even feed it to my dog! the rice was cold.they did not give me silverware. gave me a pitcher of water with no glass had to ask for it. worst Chinese food I have ever had in my entire life. I would give it zero stars if I had the option.

They changed the fried shrimp for the worse. I took the shrimp out of the breading so you can see how much smaller the shrimp are. They also taste different. I used to enjoy taking these apart and sharing them with my cat but now they're not worth buying. Aside from that this is my go-to in town for Chinese. The rice here is really wonderful. Even after it's refrigerated it's still moist and delicious even when it's cold, kind of like sticky rice. I've ordered beef fried rice, eggplant in garlic sauce, which is very spicy as it has jalapeno slices in it. The jalapeno tastes fresh and not like the slices you'd get in nachos. I also get the seafood combo. The seafood is so tender. All their meats feel tender. My favorite is braised eggplant. It's fall apart in your mouth creamy and awesome. I liked the beef and cilantro. Nobody else in my family did. The shrimp rice noodle (A26) was awful. It tasted like they just used ginger and soy sauce. Such a waste. We threw it away. Their walnut mayo shrimp is not that great. It's watery and not creamy. The green onion pancake was a hit at my house. I thought it was too starchy and dry. Last thing I'll say is that I've tried a lot of dishes here from pork stomach to intestines and kidney. I'm pretty open as to what I'll try but I have to say I was disappointed for the most part. I think it's mostly cause the dishes weren't saucy enough but maybe it's just not my thing, or not westernized enough for me? Probably... But I assure you once you find something you love you'll always come back. Update: We got orange chicken because it's my son's fave. It has way too much orange peel. I added a picture so you can see.... and that was just my serving.

Food: The best northern Chinese food in the city. Love coming here for breakfast / brunch on the weekend. The youtiao are freshly fried and doujiang is not sweet (you can add your own sugar). Also love the beef pancakes - the pancake part is perfectly crispy. My favorite thing to get here to end the meal is basidigua (the sugar spun sweet potato). It’s a fun and delicious way to end the meal! Service: Pretty basic as is standard in Chinese restaurants Atmosphere: Clean, recently updated with Chinese decor and furniture. There is paid parking on the street outside

Do not “judge” ⚖️The Cinderblock-Exterior- it’s what they serve INSIDE- that count’s!💥 The food is pure DONGBEI-Style💯 ( a region in the N. E. of China) Chinese Cuisine. IMHO-THE BEST “LAMB-on-Bone-with-Cumin” sold in Chicago. Try it! Also try the Scallion Pancake stuffed w/ smoked Pork & a dab of Hoisin Sauce appetizer! Jack ( former owner) has hosted several 🎂-Birthday-🎂 Celebrations for my Father (RIP-Pops😔) and made menu-planning and Event Planning/prep so easy! Northern City (now called Uncle Zhang’s Place) = Bridgeport’s best Dông Bei-style Restaurant !

Great northern Chinese food I would highly recommend, the staff is nice and the prices are good. I would recommend getting the cold noodle dishes and the soups.
