About Top's China

Welcome to Top's China, a Chinese restaurant located at 1205 University Dr in Durham, North Carolina (zip code 27707). As a Chinese restaurant serving the Durham community, Top's China offers a variety of dishes and services catering to local residents and those in the vicinity of University Drive. You can contact them at (919) 489-5677 or via their mobile number, +1 919-489-5677.

When choosing a Chinese restaurant for your dining needs, factors such as food quality, portion sizes, service, and the overall environment are often key considerations. Based on recent customer feedback available online, Top's China presents a mixed profile with both positive and negative aspects that potential customers should be aware of. One reviewer mentioned that Top's China offers "good deals" for their dinner plates and was particularly impressed with their to-go packaging, noting that the food remained hot even after a stop elsewhere before reaching their hotel. This suggests that Top's China prioritizes keeping takeout orders warm and may offer value through their dinner plate deals.

Another customer who ordered broccoli beef and pork fried rice praised the "good" portion sizes, stating that even with a hearty appetite, they had leftovers. This indicates that Top's China is generous with their servings, providing good value in terms of quantity. The same reviewer also assured that the plate was "packed" with food, despite a potentially misleading picture. However, this reviewer offered a less positive note, suggesting to "probably skip the egg roll" due to its taste.

Regarding the restaurant's physical environment, one reviewer was quite critical, stating, "I don’t know that I would call it one. It stinks. It’s a bit shabby, and I wouldn’t swear to you that it was clean." This strongly suggests that the dine-in experience at Top's China may be unpleasant due to issues with cleanliness and the overall condition of the premises. This reviewer explicitly recommended ordering takeout instead of dining in.

In terms of location, another reviewer pointed out the convenience, stating it's "real easy to get to" as it is "in the middle of Durham." However, this reviewer also commented on the neighborhood, describing the shopping center as "not a nice and safe neighborhood," noting the presence of people begging outside near the restaurant and a nearby supermarket. They advised caution and recommended grabbing the food and leaving. This suggests that while the location might be accessible, the surrounding area may raise safety concerns for some customers, further supporting the idea of opting for takeout or delivery.

The customer service experience also appears to be inconsistent. One reviewer mentioned that "the kid that answers the phone has a bad attitude," though they speculated this might be due to being "tired, slammed, and overworked." Despite this negative interaction, the same reviewer indicated a willingness to order from Top's China again, possibly using a delivery service like DoorDash to avoid direct interaction or visiting the location, while acknowledging that "the food is good and prompt as promised." This suggests that while the phone service might be lacking, the food itself and the speed of service are perceived as positive.

Conversely, another customer who attempted to call in an order found the phone line constantly busy. This could indicate high call volume or potential issues with their phone system. This reviewer also echoed the concerns about the neighborhood, describing the shopping center as unsafe with people begging outside. Furthermore, they found the food to be "expensive and not fresh at all," directly contradicting the positive food reviews. This significant discrepancy in food quality perception is a crucial point for potential customers to consider.

Considering these varied reviews, Top's China seems to offer some positives, such as good deals on dinner plates, generous portion sizes, and efficient takeout service with good packaging. However, there are also significant drawbacks, including serious concerns about the cleanliness and condition of the restaurant environment, potential safety issues in the surrounding neighborhood, inconsistent customer service (particularly over the phone), and conflicting reports on the freshness and quality of the food. The negative feedback regarding the egg roll and the high price and lack of freshness reported by one customer further complicate the overall picture.

For local users in Durham considering Top's China, it is crucial to weigh these factors carefully. If convenience and potentially good deals and portion sizes for takeout are priorities, and you are comfortable with the location, Top's China might be an option. However, the strong warnings about the restaurant's environment and the conflicting reports on food quality should give potential dine-in customers pause. Opting for takeout or delivery might be a safer approach for those still wanting to try their food, especially considering the concerns about the neighborhood. It would be advisable to consider the most recent reviews and perhaps even try a small order initially to assess the current quality and freshness of their dishes.

Promotional information is not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews, aside from the comment about "good deals" on dinner plates. Local users interested in any specific promotions or discounts offered by Top's China would need to inquire directly by phone or in person (if opting for takeout) or check if they have any online presence (website or social media) where such information might be shared. Given the mixed feedback, it might be prudent to focus on assessing the food quality and service based on recent experiences rather than relying on potential promotions alone.

In conclusion, Top's China, located on University Drive in Durham, NC, offers takeout and potentially dine-in services. While some customers have praised their dinner plate deals, generous portions, and efficient takeout, significant concerns have been raised about the cleanliness and condition of the restaurant environment, the safety of the surrounding neighborhood, and inconsistencies in food quality and customer service. Local users should carefully consider these mixed reviews and weigh the potential benefits against the reported drawbacks before deciding to patronize Top's China, perhaps leaning towards takeout or delivery as a safer initial approach.

They have some good deals for their dinner plates. I’m also a fan of their to-go packaging; I brought a call-in order back to my hotel (stopped for a 12-pack, even) and it was still hot. I got broccoli beef and pork fried rice. The portions are good. I can eat plenty, and I still had some leftovers for later. The picture may be misleading for lack of depth, but I can assure you that the plate was packed. Probably skip the egg roll. It did not taste good. As for the restaurant itself? I don’t know that I would call it one. It stinks. It’s a bit shabby, and I wouldn’t swear to you that it was clean. Definitely order take-out. Location, location, location. Real easy to get to. Neighborhood? You’re in the middle of Durham, my friend. If you’ve made it this far, you’ll be alright. Grab your Chinese and go. The kid that answers the phone has a bad attitude, but he might just be tired, slammed, and overworked. Would I order from here again? Sure, why not. I might send DoorDash to pick it up instead, but the food is good and prompt as promised.

First time coming here to grab an order of something for dinner, was busy tries to call in but phone kept ringing busy, this is not a nice and safe neighborhood shopping center, there’s always people begging outside around this restaurant pr the supermarket. You just have to watch yourself out here. Food was expensive and not fresh at all.

This is THE chinese restaurant to visit while Durham... It's a hole in the wall type place, BUT that's how you KNOW it's good. Incredible food & VERY reasonable pricing. You definitely get your money's worth when shopping here. Check it out for yourself. Highly recommend.

The food is consistent, the prices are reasonable! It is just in an older building but they do not allow unhoused inside to beg.
