About Top China
Welcome to Top China, a Chinese Restaurant located at 218 US-64 in Manteo, North Carolina. As part of the local Chinese Restaurant category, Top China aims to serve a variety of Chinese dishes to the Manteo community and visitors. However, based on recent customer feedback available online, it's important for potential patrons to be aware of some reported inconsistencies in both food quality and service.
Several recent reviews paint a concerning picture of the dining experience at Top China. One detailed review, updated in February 2022, describes the restaurant as "a hit or miss," suggesting a lack of consistent quality across their menu. While the lo mein is mentioned as "usually good" and the crab rangoon as sometimes being satisfactory, the reviewer notes significant issues with other dishes. Specifically, they advise against ordering beef or chicken, describing it as "always to be stringy and not real meat." For vegetarian options, the experience is also inconsistent, with the taste sometimes being "nasty." The reviewer suspects that the oil used for cooking may need more frequent changing, impacting the overall flavor of the food. This customer concludes their review by likening the experience to "playing Russian Roulette," highlighting the unpredictability of the food quality.
This same reviewer also provided an earlier update in June 2021, which further details negative aspects of their experience. They described the service as "ok" but noted a lack of basic courtesies such as a greeting or thank you. A significant concern was the absence of air conditioning on a 90-degree day, as well as the presence of flies in the restaurant. Detailing a specific order, the reviewer expressed dissatisfaction with the value and quality of their meal, which included overcooked items and food cooked in oil that tasted "bad, or old." They also mentioned forgotten rice from previous orders, which was reportedly not good anyway. The egg roll was described as likely frozen, thick, hard, overcooked, and having a "funky taste," leading the reviewer to conclude they would not eat it. This lengthy and critical review indicates a pattern of negative experiences over time, leading the customer to decide to no longer support the establishment.
Another recent review echoes these negative sentiments, stating "Bad customer service and so is the food." This reviewer specifically mentioned ordering kung pao chicken and fried rice, both of which were deemed unsatisfactory, with the kung pao chicken being so bad it had to be thrown away. They also reported a lack of customer service, feeling unwelcome in the restaurant, and described the premises as "dirty and never been cleaned." This review reinforces concerns about both the food quality and the hygiene and atmosphere of Top China.
Given these predominantly negative and detailed accounts from recent customers, it is challenging to identify positive features or reliable aspects of Top China. The only somewhat positive note is the occasional satisfaction with the lo mein and crab rangoon, as mentioned in one review. However, even these items are described as inconsistent. The overwhelming sentiment from the available reviews points to significant issues with food quality, preparation, customer service, and potentially the cleanliness of the establishment.
Based on this information, it is not possible to provide details about a pleasant environment or exceptional services at Top China. The reviews suggest the opposite, with mentions of uncomfortable temperatures, the presence of flies, and a lack of basic customer service etiquette. The feature of quick service, which is often a hallmark of Chinese takeout restaurants, is not highlighted positively in these reviews; instead, the speed seems to correlate with a decline in food quality, such as overcooked items.
Furthermore, there is no indication of any promotional information or special offers for Top China in the provided reviews. Potential customers should not expect to find mentions of discounts, lunch specials, or family deals based on the available feedback. It would be advisable to inquire directly with the restaurant about any such offers if they are a deciding factor.
In conclusion, the recent online reviews for Top China in Manteo, NC, present a concerning picture for potential customers. Reports of inconsistent and often poor food quality, issues with customer service, and concerns about the cleanliness and comfort of the dining environment should give local users pause. While there might have been positive experiences in the past, as suggested by one reviewer's reference to better quality several years ago, the current feedback is overwhelmingly negative. It would be prudent for individuals seeking Chinese cuisine in Manteo to consider these recent experiences before deciding to dine at or order from Top China. Exploring alternative options in the area, such as the "Shadi Peruvian restaurant" mentioned by one reviewer as a positive contrast, might be a worthwhile endeavor based on the available information.
Local residents and visitors to Manteo looking for a reliable and enjoyable Chinese dining experience may need to look beyond Top China based on the current customer feedback. The issues raised regarding food quality, service, and cleanliness are significant and warrant careful consideration. It is hoped that the management of Top China will address these concerns to improve the experience for their future customers. However, as of the latest reviews, the consensus suggests a need for considerable improvement in various aspects of their operation.
Given the strong negative feedback regarding Top China, it is difficult to recommend this establishment to local users at this time. The inconsistencies in food, the reported poor service, and the concerns about the environment paint a picture that is far from ideal for a pleasant dining experience. Potential customers are advised to weigh these recent experiences heavily when making their decision and perhaps explore other dining options available in Manteo.

Update 2/2022. It is a hit or miss, sometimes it's good depending on what you get, the lo-mein is usually good, the crab Rangoon is good sometimes, but sometimes I've got it and the filling is gone, the prices are higher..and skip beef or chicken, it' seems always to be stringy and not real meat? I'm vegetarian so it works for me..but depending on the day it can be nasty tasting, the oil needs more changing if it was the flavor would be better..so good luck to you, it is like playing Russian Roulette.".. Update: 6/2021. The service was ok, don't expect a hello or thank you..sadly there is no air conditioning being run on a day of 90 degree heat, as well as plenty of flies seen.. I have tried to be a loyal customer, but when I get 2 shrimp lo-mein( small size) 1 egg roll, which was overcooked.. and a orange chicken..without rice, which was charged over 13 buck, a total of $29. And some change and out of courtesy give a $3 dollar tip for the privilege to pickup this, well its down right a shame .. some have said you get what you pay for,,well I'm sorry but what was paid wasn't what I should had received, food very overcooked, food was cooked in oil that tasted bad, or old? And.. forget the forgotten rice, for in the past it wasn't good either... the egg roll I can bet, is frozen, it's not fresh, it's thick, hard, overcooked with a funky taste.. I personally would not eat what I ordered after a bite.. not this time, I've tried to often to support my local businesses..but I'm gonna have to pass, for there is other places that really are affordable and taste awesome, for instance The delicious "Shadi Peruvian restaurant"..only a few mins away, next to the Piggly Wiggly in Manteo.. Top China hasn't always been so bad until the last couple years, and this before Covid. So can't use that as an excuse "" but I had hoped for the good tried to give it another""" try...,for years ago there lo-mean was good ,( now lo-mein is like spaghetti with funky tasting seasoning) and the egg rolls were 4' year's ago tasty, not like they taste now..and I believe that at one time they were the only place that actually had "FRESH," Fortune cookies and they were good, I even paid for xtra every time for more if them to snack on..but those days are gone, Top China ,take pride in your restaurant, cook things as you would for your own family, and maybe oneday things will improve, til the food and cleanliness improves...I'm done..best of luck to your business..
Bad customer service and so is the food. We ordered kung pao chicken and fried rice. Fried rice was not good at all and we had to trash kung pao chicken. Customer service was zero. Felt like they didnt want us there. Restaurant looked dirty and never been cleaned. Avoid eating here if you can
THE WORST EVER CHINESE FOOD ! HORRIBLE STAFFS. My fork broke into 2 while trying to take a piece of orange chicken ! Chicken was hard as rock. Had ordered kung Pao chicken and Chicken with cashew as well. They both tasted exactly the same and where competing to get the first place for the worst food !! The restrooms were soo dirty. I went to wash my hands after, the lady who brought the food for us, went to the restroom with her kid. It was not even flushed ! I wonder if she even washed her hands after cleaning the kid. ( highly doubt the hygiene maintainance in the kitchen)
Overpriced garbage. Sweet and sour chicken is dough with no chicken inside. Lo mein no flavor again three little strips of chicken in a large portion. Beef is chewy and grizzly. Highly overpriced, do not trust any on-line menu, everything is at least 30% more. Place is dirty service is rude, food has little or no flavor. I have been here several times, trying to give them a chance and just gets worse each time. You can get a sit-down meal for what you will pay here for takeout. $52 for 2 people (we like so.e left overs) and we threw out most of it. Ask for a total before you go to pick up your order. It will change your mind. Absolutely worthless
Update: ordered 7-5-24 and the beef and brocoli and General Tso chicken was fantastic! New to the island and it was my 1st time ordering from here. House fried rice, spring rolls and broccoli Chicken. It was better than the Chinese on the main island Inhave tried. Will definitely order again!
