About TOMO Asian Fusion

TOMO Asian Fusion, located at 38 Eastdale Ave N, Poughkeepsie, NY, offers a variety of Asian fusion cuisine, including sushi and hibachi dishes. However, customer reviews indicate a mixed experience.

Some customers have praised the atmosphere and service, but others have expressed concerns about the food quality. Specifically, there are complaints about the salmon sushi lacking flavor and the hibachi steak being tough. The hibachi salmon was described as dry and small. The Wasabi Shumai was described as overly spicy and not paired well with its sauce, which was also described as watery. The Salmon Lovers Sushi was described as having poorly seasoned rice, and chewy Nori. Pin bones were also found in the Salmon Lovers Sushi.

There are also concerns about pricing, with some customers noting that a 20% tip was automatically added to their bill for a group of six, which is higher than the typical 15-18%.

The atmosphere is described as having a cute, Asian-inspired decor, leaning towards Japanese style, but some customers feel the space is crowded. The kitchen size has been mentioned as possibly being disproportionate to the dining area.

The service is described as adequate but not exceptional.

Great atmosphere & great service. However salmon sushi didn’t taste like regular salmon, there was no salmon flavor at all. Not sure what happened there. We were charged 20% tip for a group of 6 of us, 20% is more than the normal of 15-18%. We mostly got hibachi rice with steak but the steak was cubed and tough to chew, I left a good amount of steak to bring home for my dog. The salmon was also dry as hell and small for their hibachi rice with salmon.

I am NOT the type to write reviews unless it’s for something extraordinary or out right terrible. But having JUST left the restaurant I had felt inclined to write this review. Food: I had gotten the Wasabi Shumai. I had expected something different, which is a fault on myself for having higher expectations, but what I didn’t expect is a shumai I wouldn’t be able to eat without tearing up. It’s not like I am not experienced with wasabi or horseradish, so the fact that I actually started coughing and tearing up while eating it wasn’t pleasant. Pairing that with a peanut based sauce wasn’t what I had planned for flavor pairing either. Which also that sauce was pretty watery. What I suspect is that they mix their wasabi into the steamed wrapper for the shumai, IF they even make that, and into the meat mixture itself. The steaming on the shumai was a bit over but honestly that’s forgivable as everyone makes that mistake. I had also gotten the Salmon Lovers Sushi Entree, which honestly wasn’t the worst. I come from a more rural part of Florida so I’m used to not the best quality sushi sets and all you can eat places. So for me to even be writing this review feels out of character, but the rice wasn’t seasoned well. The nori was chewier than I preferred. The quality of the fish was perfectly acceptable, but even good fish paired with less than subpar rice can not be saved. I had also found some pin bones, but honestly that’s not really a deal breaker for me. Service: Honestly, it was fine service. Would I give it five stars? No. There was nothing that blew me out of my mind, it was just an OK service. Waiter was nice for the few seconds I interacted with them. Atmosphere: I would love to know the size of that kitchen as there seemed to not be that many tables and a full sized bar. It felt both crowded and not at the same time. The decor is cute and Asian inspired, but it really just felt like a leaning towards Japanese decor rather than a cohesive fusion of cultures.

**Update 3/6** We’ve been here twice more since my last update, so suffice it to say, Tomo is now our go-to sushi spot. The quality of fish is nearly the best we’ve had outside of the city and cocktails are well-made. Because their pricing is comparable/slightly higher than other local places but for better quality fish, it’s hard to justify going elsewhere. I can’t speak to their hot food or cooked dishes because we only get sushi or raw items. My only recommendation is that it is tricky to go on a Friday or Saturday without a reservation so either plan ahead or expect to wait. On one Friday night visit, my husband and I were able to be seated right away but when we went back on another busy Friday night with our son, the restaurant was already packed so they offered to seat us at the sushi bar to avoid a 30 to 40 minute wait. I wasn’t a fan of sitting at the sushi bar as a family because it made it harder for us to interact plus we had less space than we would at a regular table plus it was a busy walkway behind us for staff. **Update 2/23** We’ve been here two more times and overall are really pleased with the quality of the fish. It’s one of the best local places we found in the area. The fish, particularly the Nigiri, is excellent quality. It’s nice to see offerings of high-quality options such as sea urchin and fatty tuna. I’ve dined at Michelin star sushi restaurants in Manhattan and am a sushi snob about local places but really love Tomo. We’ve been wanting to try this place and finally stopped in for lunch last Saturday. Overall we had a really great visit. The restaurant itself is elegant and the service was attentive. We enjoyed the food and the sushi quality was better than what we typically find at most neighborhood places. Presentation was very good although I wasn’t personally a fan of the fish carcass on my sashimi platter. I do wish the fish temp was closer to room temp than cold, hence the deduction of a star. I’m curious to try their omakase but we’ll definitely visit again.

The Sushi are my #1 Choice! My Wife loves their “ blue Bahamas” cocktail! & the coconut shrimps.
