About Tokyo and Mandarin

Welcome to Tokyo and Mandarin, a unique Chinese and Japanese restaurant nestled at 7212 Maynardville Pike in Knoxville, TN 37918. This family-run establishment offers a diverse culinary experience, combining the comforting flavors of Chinese cuisine with the delicate artistry of Japanese dishes, including a notable sushi selection. For local residents seeking a restaurant that provides both familiar Chinese favorites and exciting Japanese options, Tokyo and Mandarin presents a compelling choice.

From the moment you step through the doors, you can expect a warm and welcoming atmosphere. According to customer feedback, the team at Tokyo and Mandarin strives to make every guest feel at home. One reviewer explicitly stated, "they make you feel very welcomed as soon as u come in," highlighting the friendly and hospitable service that seems to be a hallmark of this establishment. The fact that it is a family-run restaurant likely contributes to this personalized and caring approach to customer service, fostering a sense of community and belonging for diners.

While one early reviewer mentioned a persistent cough since the restaurant's opening, it's crucial to focus on the more recent and prevalent feedback regarding the food and service quality. Subsequent reviews paint a picture of consistently "good and hot" Chinese food, suggesting that Tokyo and Mandarin delivers on the fundamental aspect of providing satisfying and well-prepared meals. The positive remarks about the food being consistently good indicate a level of reliability and quality control in their kitchen.

One of the standout features of Tokyo and Mandarin, as highlighted by a satisfied customer, is the impressive "good spread of dishes" available. This suggests a menu that caters to a variety of tastes and preferences within both Chinese and Japanese culinary traditions. Whether you're in the mood for classic Chinese entrees or fresh and flavorful sushi, Tokyo and Mandarin aims to offer a comprehensive selection to satisfy diverse cravings. The fact that a reviewer's daughter particularly loves their sushi indicates that this aspect of their Japanese offerings is a significant draw for some patrons.

Adding to the appeal is the availability of a buffet at Tokyo and Mandarin. Buffets offer an excellent opportunity to sample a wide range of dishes and find new favorites. This format is particularly well-suited for families or groups with varying preferences, as everyone can choose what appeals to them most. The reviewer who praised the buffet also specifically mentioned the exceptional service they consistently receive from the same waitress, whom they consider "by far the best server I have ever encountered." This level of consistent and outstanding service is a significant asset for any restaurant, contributing greatly to a positive dining experience. Furthermore, the same reviewer noted the politeness of the person at the cash register, reinforcing the overall impression of a friendly and welcoming staff.

It's worth noting that one reviewer mentioned that "the place could use some sprucing up," suggesting that the ambiance might be somewhat dated or in need of renovation. However, this same reviewer immediately follows this observation by emphasizing that "the food and service are what matters." This indicates that while the decor might not be the restaurant's strongest point, the quality of the food and the exceptional hospitality provided by the staff more than compensate for any perceived shortcomings in the physical appearance of the establishment. This perspective highlights the priorities of many diners: delicious food and attentive service in a welcoming environment, even if the decor is not the most modern.

In conclusion, Tokyo and Mandarin offers a unique dining experience in Knoxville, combining the best of Chinese and Japanese cuisines. As a family-run restaurant, they prioritize making guests feel welcomed and provide consistently good and hot Chinese dishes alongside a variety of Japanese options, including well-regarded sushi. The availability of a buffet further enhances the appeal, offering a diverse selection to cater to different tastes. While one review suggests the decor could be updated, the exceptional service, particularly from a consistently praised waitress and a polite cashier, coupled with the quality and variety of the food, makes Tokyo and Mandarin a noteworthy local dining destination. Don't let the appearance fool you. This place is great! My family has always enjoyed the food here and it has a good spread of dishes. My daughter loves their sushi. Although the place could use some sprucing up, the food and service are what matters. The same waitress serves us everytime, think she is the only one, is by far the best server I have ever encountered. The same guy at the cash register is super polite also. Just a great buffet!

A lot of food to choose from. It's good, the price is good. I think the steam tables could be a little more hot. We eat there about twice a month.

Hate to leave a bad review but it was really very bad. All 4 of us left hungry. The building was dirty, one toilet filled with vomit and the other backed up from the other end. That was my first impression, but then when I made my plate I realized we made a big mistake. I had to spit a few things out, mostly the seafood which tasted rancid. Probably just don’t risk it unless you’re desperate. That being said the staff was all very nice and the female server was fantastic. I’m just hoping nobody gets sick from what we did eat.

I’m aware the place could use an update, but it’s like a mile from our home, and it’s difficult to find good Chinese food, so there’s only a couple places we’ll even eat at. They have good food and service, and that’s what’s important! I lived out West (central west) years ago, and I had to move back home to get real Chinese and Mexican food lol. It was American food, made by Americans, claiming to be Chinese and Mexican food, and was the WORST. Anyway, there’s only one server that I’m aware of, and she’s good at her job. We only had one bad experience, but that was our fault for staying and eating after being told they were moving furniture to clean the carpet, but we didn’t know they were literally waiting for us to leave, and were already taking the food away. Other than that, food is good and hot. We stopped coming in though because we’d eat too much and get sleepy lol so we started ordering it and picking it up. Sometimes, people have a bad experience, it happens, and hopefully it’s not a first impression, because as we all know, first impressions are important, so if you had a bad first experience, come back at a time food wouldn’t be cold (when it’s not busy, though even when it has been very slow, our food was still good) and try it again. They have good prices on food if you’d prefer to order meals you like, because I don’t think people realize this isn’t just a buffet, so you aren’t required to just buy it by the pound. It’s just like any other restaurant, but also has buffet. Employees are also kind.
