Environment and Atmosphere

Tim Ho Wan - Waikiki, as a branch of a globally recognized dim sum establishment, typically maintains a clean, modern, and efficient dining environment. While not explicitly detailed in the provided reviews, the brand's reputation suggests a setting designed to accommodate a high volume of diners while still offering a comfortable and pleasant experience. The ambiance is likely bustling and lively, characteristic of popular dim sum houses, where the focus is on the rapid serving of fresh, hot dishes. The location in Waikiki, a prime tourist destination, implies an accessible and potentially busy restaurant, drawing in a diverse crowd eager to sample its famous offerings. The environment is engineered to support the quick-service yet high-quality nature of dim sum dining, making it suitable for both quick bites and more leisurely meals with family and friends.

Services and Offerings

As a Chinese restaurant, Tim Ho Wan's primary service is the provision of an extensive dim sum menu. Customers are typically given a checklist to mark their desired dishes, which are then prepared freshly upon order, a hallmark of quality dim sum establishments. The variety of snacks and drinks available is noted as "impressive," suggesting a comprehensive selection beyond just the steamed and fried dumplings. The menu features a range of classic dim sum items, including highly praised char siu buns and chicken feet, which are highlighted as "standout dishes." Other common offerings would include various types of dumplings, buns, rice rolls, and savory pastries. While some dishes like steamed rice rolls might occasionally be sold out, the overall breadth of the menu ensures there are plenty of options to choose from. Beyond dine-in, Tim Ho Wan - Waikiki also offers takeout services, allowing customers to enjoy their favorite dim sum in the comfort of their own homes or accommodations.

Features of the Cuisine

The cuisine at Tim Ho Wan - Waikiki is characterized by its authentic Hong Kong-style dim sum. The brand gained international fame for its affordable yet high-quality dim sum, with its original Hong Kong location earning and maintaining a Michelin Star for many years. This heritage translates into a focus on precision in preparation, fresh ingredients, and classic flavors. The "char siu buns" are particularly lauded for being "flavorful and unique," often considered a signature dish of the restaurant, featuring a delicate bun exterior and a rich, savory barbecue pork filling. Similarly, the "chicken feet" are highlighted as exceptional, indicative of the restaurant's commitment to traditional dim sum delicacies. While one reviewer noted that the "overall quality of food is pretty good, though it’s not quite on par with what you’d find in Asia" for all dishes and mentioned issues with "greasy" custard buns and stir-fried noodles needing "more flavor," the core dim sum items consistently receive high praise for their taste and authenticity. This suggests that the restaurant excels in its specialized dim sum offerings, providing a genuine taste of Hong Kong to its Honolulu patrons.

Promotional Information and Customer Experience

Tim Ho Wan - Waikiki actively promotes a "Happy Hour" offering, which is highly recommended by customers, providing "15% off every menu item." This promotion significantly enhances the value proposition, making the "very, very tasty" dishes even more appealing. The strategic timing of such a promotion likely aims to attract diners during off-peak hours and introduce them to the full range of the menu at a discounted price. The positive customer experiences, highlighting great service, delicious food quality, and an awesome location, serve as compelling promotional points. The desire of a customer to return a second time specifically for the "honey walnut shrimp that’s to die for" (though not explicitly listed in the provided menu, it's a common Chinese restaurant favorite and likely a misremembered dish or a special, given the emphasis on other items) or the mention of the Hong Kong location's Michelin Star status, all contribute to the restaurant's allure. The general recommendation to "give it a try" indicates a strong overall positive sentiment despite minor critiques on specific dishes. For local users, Tim Ho Wan - Waikiki is presented as a prime destination for an authentic and high-quality dim sum experience, especially when taking advantage of their Happy Hour specials, making it a valuable addition to Honolulu's culinary landscape.

Went during Happy Hour which I highly recommend. 15% off every menu item. And those items were tasty. Very, very tasty. I was sad that they were sold out of the steamed rice rolls though. I would have loved to have tried some. Perhaps I’ll just have to visit their Hong Kong location, which had maintained a Michelin Star for 9 years, and get some there!

The overall quality of food is pretty good, though it’s not quite on par with what you’d find in Asia. The variety of snacks and drinks are impressive. I especially liked the char siu buns and chicken feet, which are definitely the standout dishes here—both are flavorful and unique. That being said, the custard buns were a bit too greasy, and some dishes, like the stir-fried noodles, could use more flavor. Still, I’d recommend giving it a try!

One of my favorite places to eat in waikiki! Great selections, every dish I've had is very full of flavor. Very reasonable pricing for the area too! I did like their old location, but the new one is bright and cheery. I come here often for take out, I love their dim sum, the lotus leaf rice, turnip cake, but the star of this show is their pork buns, literally one of the best things I've ever eaten! The sweet and crispy outside outshines any ol regular sticky bun. These guys know flavor! I usually get take out but the other day I stayed in to dine and my server, Sunny shone up to her name, thanks again I love your food and will continue to support!

This place's been on my list of places to try for dim sum. It’s usually pretty busy, but when I went, the wait was very short for just one person. The menu was smaller than I expected, but it still offered a decent variety of dishes. I tried the steamed rice roll with pork and the spicy dumplings. The food was prepared fresh and arrived fairly quickly. Both dishes were decent—though the pork had a slight smell, it was overall fine. I’d like to try the minced beef next time. The pricing is reasonable for what you get. While the service was mediocre, I would still return someday.

Everything we ordered at Tim Ho Wan was fantastic. The service was quick, kind, and attentive. We had the: - Steamed Pork Dumplings With Shrimp (Siu Mai) - STEAMED SHRIMP DUMPLINGS (HAR GOW) - Sticky Rice In Lotus Leaf - Steamed Pork Spare Rib With Black Bean Sauce - Pan Fried Noodle with Char-siu - Steamed Short Rib with Black Pepper - Fried Crab and Shrimp Dumplings with Wasabi May - Chili Oil Steamed Wontons - Iced Milk Tea This was our last meal in Hawaii and ended our trip on a great note. We're happy to see that Tim has a location in NYC, where we're from, and will definitely be checking it out soon!
