About The Flying Dumpling

The Flying Dumpling, located at 4835 Calhoun Rd E in Houston, Texas, is a Chinese Restaurant specializing exclusively in takeout. As such, it does not offer dine-in service or a traditional restaurant atmosphere. However, it focuses on providing good quality food at reasonable prices for customers looking to enjoy Chinese cuisine on the go.

According to customer reviews, The Flying Dumpling offers a variety of popular dishes. Standouts include the General Tso's chicken and the pork egg roll, which have been described as great. Other items like the fried rice and wonton soup are also considered good. Customers often note the generous portion sizes, with one reviewer mentioning that a single order provided enough food for two meals, highlighting the great value offered.

A key feature of The Flying Dumpling is its efficiency, particularly for those on a tight schedule. One customer shared their experience of ordering during a lunch break, noting that while the bao takes approximately 20 minutes to prepare, other items are ready in about 10 minutes. The counter staff is commended for clearly communicating preparation times, allowing customers to make informed choices to suit their needs. In this instance, the customer's order was ready in just about 5 minutes.

While there are outdoor tables available, the primary service is takeout. For those waiting for their orders, chairs are available inside the premises. Customers interested in ordering bao are advised to call ahead due to the longer preparation time, ensuring it is ready for a quick pickup. Not really a place that qualifies for a review of service or atmosphere, as it's completely take-out only. Good food! Pricing is good too :)

The General Tso chicken and pork egg roll were great. The fried rice and wonton soup were good. I spent about $15 and it was more food than I could eat, so I'm saving half for lunch tomorrow. Great value!! I went for the bao on my lunch break, but the counter person told me it takes 20 minutes for bao and 10 minutes for everything else. So I changed my order. I'm very glad he was clear with me on that so I wouldn't be late getting back to work. My food was ready in about 5 minutes. There's outdoor tables only. There are chairs inside where you can wait for your order. Next time, I'm calling in ahead of time so I can scoop up some bao and head straight back to work.

The food is amazing, but the young lady’s customer service skills are horrible. This is my second time coming and I’ve noticed she smiles and greets other customers but not the black customers. It’s unfortunate she does this and please understand, I’m not one to play the “race card” so maybe it’s a subconscious bias in her defense (which is what I’m teaching my students about currently), but her entire tone and mannerism is very cold when it comes to a certain clientele. Hopefully the manager can evaluate what I have witnessed on both attempts to patron this business. Your food is TOP NOTCH. The service is lackluster. Take care.

The food is very good. Definitely a Takeout, fast food joint. Only 6 chairs inside so you can wait for your order. Food is cooked to order so expect up to 20 minute wait. The name suggests dumplings abound but in retrospect, they take up a very small section of the menu. They are delicious though so be sure to try them and the crab rangoons. They do have 1 picnic table outside in the parking lot, but only 6 adults can fit on it. Enjoy the food, call in your order so you have no wait and find a place to relax and enjoy it! Bon Appetit! 😋😋

Edit: added pork Bao and house special Small place; one person in the front taking orders and the kitchen on the back. Got dark special fried rice. I’d give the portion 4/5 but the flavor 3/5. It’s okay at best. Tried the pork Bao. Texture and flavor 4/5. Only thing I don’t like is that the air pocket in the bao is too much. Dough is springy with good pullback after pressing. Pork has decent flavor. House special fried rice texture is 4/5 and flavor 5/5. Sauce is sweet, tangy, and a hint of umami. Lightly spicy and juicy chicken. Exterior is lightly crispy. Egg rolls are also delicious. My friend had the Hunan Chicken and he said it’s a bit more spicier Overall 4/5. Would I go back with family/friends? Yes if they recommend it. A bit pricey though.
