About Taste of Canton
Welcome to Taste of Canton, a Chinese restaurant located at 6820 Veterans Memorial Blvd Ste A2, Metairie, LA 70003, USA. Operating within the Chinese restaurant category, Taste of Canton has recently undergone a change in ownership, now being managed by a former chef with ten years of experience from the well-known 5 Happiness Chinese restaurant in New Orleans. You can reach this establishment at (504) 885-4033 or their mobile number, +1 504-885-4033, to place an order or for any inquiries.
Based on recent customer reviews, Taste of Canton primarily functions as a takeout establishment. While there are a few tables available on the premises, these are intended for customers who wish to eat their takeout orders immediately and do not offer a traditional dine-in experience with waitstaff. The restaurant is described as a family-run business, and according to the new owner, they are continuing to use the same recipes that were employed by the previous owner, suggesting a consistency in the culinary offerings.
One significant environmental factor noted by a reviewer is the current lack of air conditioning at Taste of Canton. According to the owner's daughter, who works at the counter, the AC has been out of service for approximately a year, and the responsibility for repairs lies with the renters. This resulted in one customer dining in at one of the available tables with only a fan running and the entrance door open for ventilation. While this customer found the situation tolerable, they mentioned that had they been aware of the lack of AC beforehand, they would have opted for takeout. This is an important consideration for customers planning to eat their orders on-site, especially during warmer months.
In terms of the food, one reviewer shared a positive experience with the shrimp and lobster sauce combo, which includes combo fried rice and an egg roll. The egg roll was described as large and generously filled with noticeable shrimp and other ingredients, with the reviewer considering it to be above average. They also noted that it was freshly prepared, evident from its crispy exterior, indicating that it was not sitting under a heat lamp for an extended period. The fried rice, while appearing visually appealing, was found to be somewhat lacking in taste initially but was suggested to be improved with the addition of soy sauce and sesame seed oil. The standout dish for this reviewer was the shrimp and lobster sauce, which they considered one of the best they had ever tasted, being very flavorful with a substantial amount of shrimp.
The same reviewer also had a positive interaction with the owner and his wife, describing them as very pleasant. They also briefly met the owner's younger children, who were described as well-mannered, reinforcing the family-run nature of the establishment.
However, not all feedback has been positive. Another reviewer reported a very poor service experience at Taste of Canton. This customer mentioned being charged a $2 upcharge to remove pork from their rice and an additional $2 upcharge for sweet and sour sauce. Furthermore, they noted that the temperature inside the restaurant was a very uncomfortable 84 degrees Fahrenheit. When they inquired about turning on the air conditioning, their request was met with a direct "no." Due to these negative experiences with both the service and the environment, this reviewer stated that they would never return to Taste of Canton.
Considering the contrasting reviews, the environment of Taste of Canton is primarily that of a takeout establishment with limited seating available for immediate consumption of orders. The lack of functioning air conditioning is a significant drawback that potential customers should be aware of, especially if they plan to eat on-site. The atmosphere is described as family-run, with the owner and his family present and interacting with customers.
The services offered by Taste of Canton mainly focus on takeout. While dine-in is technically possible at a few tables, it is without traditional table service. The recent negative review highlights potential issues with service policies, such as upcharges for modifications and condiments, as well as a lack of accommodation regarding the uncomfortable temperature inside the restaurant. In contrast, the other reviewer found the owner and his wife to be pleasant, suggesting that service quality might be inconsistent or depend on individual interactions.
Features of Taste of Canton include the fact that it is now run by a former chef from a well-regarded New Orleans Chinese restaurant, potentially indicating a certain level of culinary expertise. The use of the previous owner's recipes suggests a continuity in the menu and flavor profiles. The large and well-filled egg rolls were noted as a positive feature. The shrimp and lobster sauce was also highlighted as a standout dish. However, potential drawbacks include the lack of air conditioning and reported service issues such as unexpected upcharges and a lack of responsiveness to customer comfort.
Currently, there is no information available regarding any specific promotional offers or discounts at Taste of Canton. As a newly taken over, family-run establishment, they may introduce promotions in the future to attract customers. Individuals interested in potential specials should contact the restaurant directly at (504) 885-4033 or +1 504-885-4033 to inquire about any current deals or upcoming offers.
In conclusion, Taste of Canton in Metairie, LA, is a Chinese restaurant primarily oriented towards takeout, now under the management of a chef with a background from 5 Happiness. While some customers have praised specific dishes like the shrimp and lobster sauce and the large egg rolls, potential customers should be aware of the limited dine-in facilities, the lack of air conditioning, and reported issues with service policies and the handling of customer comfort. The experience appears to be somewhat mixed, with positive feedback on food quality in some areas offset by concerns about the environment and service in others. It would be advisable for those considering Taste of Canton to weigh these factors and perhaps inquire about the current operating conditions before placing an order or planning to eat on-site.

Customer Reviews
First of all, the place has been just taken over by a former chef of 10 years from 5 Haphineses Chinese restaurant in New Orleans. This is basically a takeout establishment, though there are a few tables to eat on from take out boxes only. No waitresses. This is a family-run establishment, using the same recipes from the former owner, according to the new owner. There’s no A/C at present, and according to the daughter, whom works counter, it’s been broken for a year. She told me that the renters are liable for such repairs. I sat alone at one of the tables to eat my order with only a fan running and the entrance door opened. It wasn’t that bad, however, but had I known ahead of time I would have taken it to go. Anyways, I ordered the shrimp and lobster sauce combo which includes combo fried rice and egg roll. The egg roll was large and filled with noticeable shrimp and other fillings, and it was above average. Freshly prepared, not sitting under heat lamp, evidenced by its crispy outside casing. The fried rice looked better than it tasted, but a little soy sauce and sesame seed oil and it would be a hit. The the shrimp and lobster sauce is one of the best I have ever had, very flavorful with enough shrimp to top it off. Both the owner and his wife are very pleasant, and I met the younger children who seemed well mannered.
The service was very poor! $2 up charge to remove pork from rice. $2 up charge for sweet and sour sauce. The temperature in side was 84 degrees, when asked if they could turn on the air on, it was met with an “no”. Will never go back
I had the bourbon chicken with fried rice and an egg roll. The only thing good was the egg roll and that was a 6/10. I think they gave me old chicken cause it was tough to chew and the fried rice had no flavor even with the soy sauce. Won’t be coming here again very below average wasted $17 dollars
We tried to order spicy shrimp fried rice and was told that they couldn't make it because the other customers wouldn't want their rice spicy. I thought they made every order separately. But when we got home the food we ordered was not as good as we had previously experienced.
I called it in and was told that they just took over the previous business and did a ton of cleaning in the kitchen. The young lady in the phone was polite and kind to ask me to give them a try. So i stopped by and ordered a bourbon chicken. The young lady was so happy and excited that i actually stopped by. She offered me a free bottle drink and also a handful of candies. And the bourbon chicken was just amazingly Yummy. The candies Yummy too. Great service and food. Definitely will come back to try their other dishes.
