About Szechuan Express
Located at 260 Yonge St in downtown Toronto, Szechuan Express is a Chinese restaurant specializing in Szechuan cuisine. Based on recent customer reviews, experiences have been varied, particularly concerning their vegetarian options and service.
One customer who ordered the vegetarian platter with noodles, spicy tofu and vegetables, and vegetarian dumplings reported a negative experience. They found the vegetables to be raw and difficult to chew, the noodles bland, and the spicy tofu sauce primarily soy sauce-based with little seasoning. Additionally, they felt the dumplings resembled Bao. Due to the poor quality, they discarded the meal and advised against trying the vegetarian options, suggesting that meat dishes might be better, though they could not personally recommend them.
Another customer who ordered a shrimp and vegetable noodle soup expressed disappointment with their order being incorrect. They also mentioned a lack of flavor in the dish, describing the vegetables as boiled. Furthermore, they noted having to request a bag and utensils themselves, and experienced a long wait despite only two orders being prepared. This customer also felt the dish lacked sufficient flavor.
Based on these recent reviews, it appears that experiences at Szechuan Express can be inconsistent, especially regarding the quality and preparation of vegetarian dishes and the accuracy of orders. Customers have also highlighted concerns about the flavor of some dishes and the level of service. Potential diners may want to consider these recent experiences when deciding whether to visit Szechuan Express.

We had the veg platter with noodles, spicy tofu and veggies, and veg dumplings on the side. It was really bad that the veggies were raw and couldn't even chew it. The noodles were blant, spicy tofu sauce was a little bit seasoned as it was soy sauce base, the dumplings felt like Bao instead of dumplings. Noodles were blant, had to throw it all out as it was not good, waste of $20. Don't try the veggie option as it's not good. Maybe meat products are good, but i won't recommend the veggie items.
I asked for a shrimp and veggie noodle soup. The lady got my order wrong. Very disappointed. I spent $13 on this bs and had to ask for a bag for myself and had to get my own utensils. Wait was long even though there were just 2 orders that were being prepared. NEEDS MORE FLAVOUR, not boiled vegetables.
It would be better if they can make discount (like after 5pm) in order to sell all the food or pack them into boxed before closing. (To avoid lineup issues at the night time) - The hot & sour soup was pretty good (the only thing I was concerned was the soup tastes pretty spicy🔥) - The food was pretty mid, I can only find a piece of carrot among the whole bowl👀which is the only thing which matters to me. PS: upon all the factors that I’ve mentioned, I would say 3.5 stars but the google review doesn’t allow me to click the remaining half stars so ya..
I've seen some pretty bad reviews on this place, so I thought I'd share my most recent experience here from last week (August 30 2024). Let me preface this by saying that I only order the same thing every time. The food can be hit or miss, I know from personal experience and friends telling me, but I found a delicious combo on my first try at this place and have kept ordering it ever since. The combo I always get and recommend is the Stir-fry Ho Fun Noodles as base + Black Bean Chicken on top. This is a Combo 4 $10.50 pre-tax as of this review, and was a good portion considering the price (i.e. it filled me up just fine for a midday meal). The ho fun noodles are not dry (unlike some other places I've had) and have a good, even colour and wok hei aroma, and the sauce from the Black Bean Chicken coats the noodles perfectly in a savoury glaze with deep flavour. Con is that the chicken was a little dry, but it was definitely fresh (would've preferred beef). Additionally, the Black Bean Chicken has chunks of green pepper in it which were cooked soft with no crunch but not mushy; I personally liked them cooked this way since green pepper flavour can overpower the rest if undercooked/raw, so to me everything aside from the chicken was perfectly cooked. If this place only sold this combo, I would've given it 4 stars (5 stars - 1 star for dry chicken). It's the most convenient place for me to fix my craving for black bean beef ho fun noodles as a student, for location and price. Most places have beef ho fun noodles but no black bean sauce which coats the noodles, unless you go to a nicer $$ sit down restaurant, so this place is a gem to me (aside from the fact that they only have Black Bean CHICKEN and not beef). I have also tried the dim sum here a few times. I have tried 3 dim sum: the Shrimp Har Gow, Pork Siu Mai, and Pan-fried Pork Dumplings. The Shrimp Har Gow and Pork Siu Mai are a yes from me—good and made fresh, with the only con being that I once had to wait 20 minutes for a new batch (this was 1 hour after opening; but it was worth it for them to come piping hot with fresh wrappers). I would give the har gow and siu mai 4.5 stars for taste - 0.5 stars for price value to quality = 4 stars. However, I DO NOT RECOMMEND the Pan-fried Pork Dumplings; they had a burnt oil taste, dry, and were overall unpleasant. A review from Anton Pinchuk (3 days ago) shows me that nothing has changed since I last had them (which was February 2023); I can verify that those pictures are accurate and taste as burnt as they look. I would recommend avoiding all deep-fried foods here and agree with all the reviews on this point. Regarding service, I see some mixed reviews here. I personally have never had a bad experience, only average to good service (typical of a Chinese fast food place), though disclaimer, I am Asian (don't know if this is a factor in server's attitude considering other people's reviews; could also be that I am just used to/more tolerant of typical Chinese "bad" service). I mean, if you're expecting Western-level food service from ANY Chinese fast food place, you are setting yourself up for disappointment; this is the best you're gonna get from Chinese aunties. Anyway, I haven't seen a difference between this place and any other Chinese fast food place when it comes to service (including Shanghai 360 and Ruby Thai in the same food court). Service gets 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars. Atmosphere is 3 stars (average/typical). I want my review to be as fair and impartial as possible, so I can't rate this place higher than 3 stars. That is taking everything into account. The things I like (recommended dishes) I would rate 4 stars, but 1 star penalty for the quality of deep fried foods = 3 stars. I can't fully recommend this place, I can only recommend my specific order since I've had it many times and it has been the same (good) quality every time, so I am confident enough to recommend it. Overall, 3 stars. Recommended dishes: Stir-fry Ho Fun Noodles + Black Bean Chicken (exactly this combo), Shrimp Har Gow, Pork Siu Mai
I had this experience, I ordered for a combo which includes a seafood. I had religious restrictions of not eating any meat that day! So I ordered fish and shrimp. I went to my seat, I opened it and it was chicken. I went back to the store and told them that I got the wrong order and the said manager named Lisa yelled because she said I ordered chicken. How can I order meat when I am not allowed to eat meat. The Eaton branch manager isn't good for customer service, why yelling customers when it is there fault in the first place. Their food was good and affordable, but the customer service is not really for people.
