About Szechuan Chef

Located at 7007 S Macadam Ave in Portland, Oregon, Szechuan Chef is a Chinese restaurant that specializes in the bold and distinctive flavors of Szechuan cuisine. Based on customer reviews, this establishment offers a menu that includes both familiar favorites and more traditional Chinese dishes, promising a diverse culinary experience. Patrons have noted the convenience of a large parking lot, a welcoming staff, and a pleasant menu, contributing to a positive initial impression. While individual experiences with specific dishes varied, the overall sentiment suggests that Szechuan Chef is a place worth exploring for those seeking authentic Szechuan flavors.

The environment at Szechuan Chef appears to be welcoming and accommodating. The mention of a "big parking lot" is a significant convenience for diners, especially in a city like Portland where parking can sometimes be challenging. The "welcoming staff" contributes to a positive first impression and suggests a friendly atmosphere. While the reviews do not delve into specific details about the restaurant's décor or ambiance, the overall tone implies a comfortable and inviting setting for enjoying a meal.

In terms of services, Szechuan Chef seems to prioritize customer satisfaction through friendly and efficient service. The staff is described as "welcoming," indicating a positive interaction from the moment of arrival. The willingness to accommodate first-time visitors and guide them through the menu suggests a customer-centric approach. The fact that a reviewer was willing to give a 5-star rating despite some reservations about certain dishes speaks to a positive overall experience, likely influenced by the service.

A key feature of Szechuan Chef is its focus on Szechuan cuisine, known for its liberal use of Sichuan peppercorns, which impart a unique numbing sensation along with the spiciness. One reviewer specifically mentioned that the restaurant offers "some very traditional Chinese foods," indicating an authenticity that might appeal to those seeking a more genuine taste of Chinese culinary heritage beyond standard American-Chinese fare. The "amazing flavors" highlighted by another customer further underscore the quality and authenticity of the dishes.

Among the dishes reviewed, the "chili chopped fish" received high praise. One customer who ordered it "loved it a lot," appreciating the medium chunks of fish and the inclusion of tiny pieces of green beans. They also noted a pleasant level of spiciness – "a little spicy but not too much" – suggesting a balanced and flavorful dish that caters to those who enjoy a bit of heat without being overwhelming. This positive feedback makes the chili chopped fish a strong recommendation for first-time visitors.

In contrast, the "hot garlic shrimp" received a less favorable review. The portion size was noted as being smaller than the chili chopped fish, and the flavor was described as "a little sweet" and reminiscent of hoisin sauce, which was not to the reviewer's liking. This highlights that individual preferences for flavor profiles can vary, and not all dishes may appeal to everyone. The "hot and sour soup" was described as "ok," suggesting a neutral experience – neither particularly impressive nor disappointing.

The "egg rolls" were another dish that received mixed feedback. One reviewer found the inside to taste "a little gummy," which detracted from their enjoyment. This suggests a potential inconsistency in the preparation or texture of this particular appetizer.

Despite some mixed reviews on specific items, one enthusiastic customer expressed a desire to return and try more things, particularly looking forward to ordering more of the "chili fish." Another reviewer mentioned their strong interest in trying the "GRILL WHOLE FISH," indicating that Szechuan Chef offers some more unique and potentially standout dishes. The fact that the grill whole fish was unavailable on their visit suggests it might be a popular item or one that requires specific sourcing.

Promotional information is not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews. Therefore, it is not possible to comment on any current specials or promotions that Szechuan Chef might be offering to attract customers.

Located at 7007 S Macadam Ave, Portland, OR 97219, USA, Szechuan Chef is easily accessible with its "big parking lot." The combination of authentic Szechuan flavors, a welcoming staff, and a diverse menu that includes traditional Chinese options makes it a compelling choice for local diners. While some dishes received mixed feedback, the highly praised chili chopped fish and the allure of trying other unique items like the grill whole fish suggest that Szechuan Chef offers a culinary adventure worth exploring for those who appreciate genuine Szechuan cuisine.

In conclusion, Szechuan Chef in Portland offers a Szechuan dining experience characterized by traditional Chinese flavors, a welcoming atmosphere, and convenient parking. The chili chopped fish stands out as a highly recommended dish, while other items like the hot garlic shrimp and egg rolls received mixed reviews. The availability of more unique options like the grill whole fish adds to the restaurant's appeal for adventurous eaters. For local users seeking authentic Szechuan cuisine and a friendly dining environment, Szechuan Chef is a place to consider.

We tried this place for the first time today and loved it! Big parking lot, welcoming staff, and nice menu. I ordered the chili chopped fish and loved it a lot. I really liked the medium chunks of fish and the tiny pieces of green beans. A little spicy but not too much. My husband ordered the hot garlic shrimp and got a much smaller portion than me. I didn't like the flavor of his. It tasted a little sweet and kind of reminded me of hoisin sauce. The hot and sour soup was ok. I wasn't a huge fan of the egg rolls because the inside tasted a little gummy to me. However, I still give 5 stars for my fabulous meal and for the overall experience. I might not get a lunch special next time, and I can't wait to try more things and eat more chili fish!

They have some very traditional Chinese foods. Amazing flavors, and would definitely go back. We really wanted to try the GRILL WHOLE FISH but they went out of fishes.

Food was amazing. The food came out super quick and tasted amazing. My 3 star rating is from the service & atmosphere. Food was 5 star. Service was mediocre. No napkins at my table. Never really was checked on after food was brought out. Inside the restaurant was very cold. It almost felt colder inside than outside the restaurant. I don't like eating with a jacket on but it was so cold I had to. Overall the food was amazing, service needed work and the atmosphere was cold. Since it was so cold inside the food on the table became cold fairly quickly in itself.

My Wife & I visited Portland from Seattle and searched for Szechuan food, and this place came up. After reading the reviews, we thought of trying it as we both are huge fans of the cuisine. This restaurant definitely has a good ambiance and comfortable seating. We ordered Hot & Sour Soup, Chopped Pepper Fish, Cumin Lamb & Fish Fillet in Hot & Spicy Gravy. Having tried all of the above at many excellent Szechuan restaurants, we believe everything was excellent except the fish, which was very good but not the best we’ve had. One suggestion (which does not affect this review) is if they can keep a couple of dessert options on the menu. Overall, worth it!

First time in Portland looking for authentic szechuan food and found the gem! Couldn't get any more authentic than this! The food was awesome, the portions were huge, and the service was great! We highly recommend this restaurant!! Go and try! You won't be disappointed! Must try the pork intestine with fish in szechuan oil!
