About SXY Szechuan
Located at 1450 Ala Moana Blvd in Honolulu, HI 96814, USA, SXY Szechuan is a Chinese Restaurant specializing in the fiery and flavorful cuisine of the Szechuan province. They can be contacted at (808) 942-8884 or via mobile at +1 808-942-8884. Based on recent customer reviews spanning from 2023 to early 2025, SXY Szechuan has garnered a reputation for its authentic and often spicy dishes, attracting both locals and visitors seeking a genuine taste of Szechuan flavors.
One early reviewer who visited for lunch on a Friday was pleased to find a table available and noted the extensive choices for appetizers and entrees. A particular highlight for this customer was the prominent use of Szechuan pepper in the dishes, which is characteristic of this regional Chinese cuisine and known for its unique numbing and aromatic qualities. Specific dishes that impressed this reviewer included the chili wontons, described as "very good" and perfectly sized for a single bite, and the green beans, which were noted for being fresh and crisp. The lamb with cumin and cilantro was deemed "very addictive," and the twice-cooked pork was stir-fried with a generous amount of green onions or leeks. This reviewer, with experience in finding good Chinese food in California, walked away "pretty impressed" with their meal at SXY Szechuan.
More recent visits in 2023 and 2024 provided further insights into the menu. The cold spicy chicken dish received a mixed review, with the chicken noted as being "too rough," contrasting with the expectation of tenderness. However, other dishes like the mala intestines and frogs were enthusiastically described as "amazing!" The chilli diced chicken was praised for its tender texture and "proper seasoning," leading one reviewer to declare SXY Szechuan their "favorite Chinese restaurant on island."
A review from December 2024 offered valuable advice regarding the seasoning of the dishes. This customer suggested that it is "better not to ask for the seasoning adjustment" to fully experience the authentic flavor. They found that requesting a reduction in heat negatively altered the overall taste of the dishes. This indicates that SXY Szechuan stays true to traditional Szechuan recipes, which often involve a significant level of spiciness and a complex balance of flavors.
The latest update from 2025 highlights new additions to the menu, specifically grilled fishes, which were described as "so nice" and accompanied by a generous amount of ingredients. Additionally, SXY Szechuan offers the option to add extra sides, reminiscent of a hot pot experience, with choices like extra intestines and extra duck blood available for $10 each. This suggests a willingness to cater to diners who enjoy these specific ingredients and a more communal style of eating.
Based on the reviews, the environment at SXY Szechuan seems to be comfortable and able to accommodate lunchtime crowds, as one reviewer found a table for three without issue on a Friday. The mention of returning visits over a span of more than a year suggests a consistent level of quality that encourages repeat business. The latest update recommends visiting for lunch, noting that it is "less crowded and better service" can be expected during this time. This implies that the restaurant might get busier during dinner hours, and opting for lunch could provide a more relaxed dining experience with potentially more attentive service.
The services at SXY Szechuan include dine-in, as indicated by the reviewers' experiences of eating at the restaurant. The mention of finding a table and the interaction with servers suggests standard table service. The recommendation to visit during lunch for "better service" implies that the quality of service might vary depending on the time of day and the restaurant's occupancy. The availability of extra sides like intestines and duck blood, similar to hot pot additions, indicates a willingness to customize the dining experience to some extent.
The features of SXY Szechuan are primarily centered around its authentic Szechuan cuisine, characterized by the use of Szechuan pepper and bold, often spicy flavors. The menu offers a wide variety of appetizers and entrees, including popular dishes like chili wontons, fresh and crisp green beans, addictive lamb with cumin and cilantro, flavorful twice-cooked pork, amazing mala intestines and frogs, and tender and well-seasoned chilli diced chicken. More recent additions include grilled fishes with abundant ingredients and the option to add hot pot-style sides. A key feature seems to be the commitment to authentic seasoning, with a caution against requesting adjustments to the heat level to preserve the intended flavors. The availability of less common ingredients like mala intestines and frogs suggests a willingness to offer more traditional and adventurous Szechuan dishes.
Currently, the provided reviews do not explicitly mention any specific promotional offers, discounts, or special features at SXY Szechuan. The focus of the feedback is on the quality and authenticity of the food and the service experience. The latest update does mention the pricing of extra sides (intestines and duck blood at $10 each), but this is more of a menu detail than a promotion. To inquire about any current specials or discounts, it would be best to contact the restaurant directly via phone.
In conclusion, SXY Szechuan on Ala Moana Blvd in Honolulu offers a compelling option for those seeking an authentic and flavorful Szechuan dining experience. With a menu featuring a wide array of spicy and traditional dishes, including standout items like the chili wontons, lamb with cumin and cilantro, and mala intestines, the restaurant has impressed even diners familiar with good Chinese food. The advice to refrain from adjusting the seasoning highlights their commitment to genuine Szechuan flavors. While service might be better during less crowded lunch hours, the overall impression is of a restaurant that prioritizes the quality and authenticity of its cuisine. The recent addition of grilled fishes and hot pot-style sides further expands their offerings. Local users with a penchant for bold and spicy flavors should consider visiting SXY Szechuan for a true taste of Szechuan cuisine in Honolulu.

Customer Reviews
We came here on a Friday for lunch and were pleased to find a table for 3. Lots of choices for the appetizers, entrees. Loved the Szechuan pepper 🌶️ in the dishes. The chili wontons were very good (size is perfect for a one bite). The green beans were fresh and crisp. The lamb with cumin and cilantro was very addictive and the twice-cooked pork was stir-fried with a lot of green onions/leeks. We walked away pretty impressed since we can find good Chinese food in California.
-2023/2024 visits- The cold spicy chicken dish is too rough, which the chicken is supposed to be very tender. The mala intestines and frogs are amazing! Chilli diced chicken tastes really tender with proper seasoning. Some dishes just make this place my favorite Chinese restaurant on island now. -2024/12- Just tried some non popular dishes here, all.i wanna say is, better not to ask for the seasoning adjustment so you won't miss the authentic flavor. Coz every time I asked to lower the heat, the flavor changed in a negative way. ~~~Latest Update 2025~~~ Again here. But this time trying their grilled fishes, which were so nice with lot of ingredients. You can also add extra sides, like hot pot. Extra intestines at 10 dollars, extra duck blood at 10 dollars. Strongly recommend to come by for lunch which is less crowded and better service.
Mouth watering delicious. Love the intestines dry pot, so good!!! Recommend the dessert, ice jelly with brown sugar, but be warned it's a big dessert be best to share
Had dinner here for a family of 4. We ordered fried shredded potatoes, tofu and vegetable soup, Stir-fried water spinach, stir- fried eggplant and beans, and garlic pork ribs. We asked for very mild level of spiciness and low salt. Everything was yummy, good portion and reasonably priced. We finished eating everything without wasting any food. We could have ordered some more traditional Sichuan dishes which I am sure are also yummy but we wanted to eat more veggies to remain healthy during traveling. This is a great place to go to get authentic Chinese/Sichuan foods. We also ordered ice jelly with brown sugar which is also very authentic. Highly recommend!
There are traditional Chinese dishes with great flavor. But the desserts are either fried too dry or missing some tasty ingredients. Overall, it is a nice place to eat.
