About Sushi Ichiban
Welcome to Sushi Ichiban! While categorized as a Chinese Restaurant for platform purposes, Sushi Ichiban, located at 619 S Wright St in Champaign, IL, USA, is a Japanese restaurant specializing in sushi and other Japanese dishes. For our local users in US, Sushi Ichiban offers an example of a restaurant focused on Japanese cuisine, which is popular worldwide for its fresh ingredients and delicate flavors.
One customer who visited Sushi Ichiban for a birthday dinner found the food to be "delicious and amazing," particularly the sushi. However, this positive experience was marred by a negative interaction with the owner/manager during payment. The customer and their friends had unknowingly taken a bottled drink that was slightly more expensive than the canned drink they had paid for. Despite offering to pay the difference, the owner/manager reportedly yelled at them and created a scene. While the customer stated they would return for the food, they strongly suggested the manager needs "therapy" due to this behavior.
Another reviewer had a mixed experience. They found the tempura to be good and the build and presentation of the sushi appealing. However, they noted that the taste of the sushi was lacking, suggesting that the fish was kept at room temperature, which negatively affected its texture and flavor. This reviewer also mentioned the presence of "quite a few flies," including baby flies, indicating a potential breeding issue on or near the premises. On a positive note, they found the gentleman at the counter to be "plenty nice and courteous." They also indicated that the "all you can eat" aspect of the restaurant seemed to be inconsistent and not something customers should reliably plan for.
Based on these reviews, Sushi Ichiban offers sushi and tempura. While some customers have found the food delicious and the presentation appealing, there are concerns about the freshness and temperature of the fish affecting the taste of the sushi. The presence of flies is also a significant negative aspect mentioned by one reviewer. The service seems to be inconsistent, with one positive interaction at the counter contrasted by a highly negative encounter with the owner/manager. The availability of an "all you can eat" option appears unreliable. For local users in US considering sushi restaurants, it's important to look for establishments that prioritize the freshness and proper handling of seafood, maintain a clean environment, and provide consistently courteous and professional service.

I went here for my birthday dinner yesterday. The food was delicious and amazing. I got some sushi! Upon paying, me and my friends paid for drinks. We didn’t know we had paid for a canned drink over a bottled drink and the owner/manager was yelling at us and being aggressive that we grabbed a bottled drink (that was 20 cents more expensive) and we had offered to pay the difference and he just continued causing a scene. I’d go back for the food, 100% but the manager needs therapy. (Check his reply for a sorry excuse over pocket change and a fault ON HIM)
The tempura was good, the build and presentation of the sushi looked good, but the taste wasn't there. For some reason, this area likes to keep the fish at room temperature and it affects the texture and flavor of the fish. There were also quite a few flies, most of them babies so there is breeding happening on site or near enough to be considered the same. The gentleman at the counter was plenty nice and courteous. The ayce aspect of this restaurant is more when they want to/can not something to plan on going into the restaurant.
good food, but this guy can't take negative reviews with constructive criticism, which in turn is negatively impacting his business. what a vicious cycle. if only kitchen nightmares with gordon ramsay still existed... edit: anyone who has a differing opinion is just "inaccurate" and "wrong" to the owner. interesting.
I've been to lots of sushi places in Champaign but this is my new favorite. Everything is incredibly fresh, the salmon is the best I've ever had - noticeably better than some of the other places I've been to. The atmosphere is very laid-back and homey. The owner, William, is good-natured and welcoming. 10/10 stars.
Delicious food and with good price. I got a Chicken Stir Fried Udon, was the best I've in Urbana Champaign so far. Don't ask for double noodles, it is too much... The regular portion is more than enough.
