About Superstar Dim Sum & Seafood Restaurant
Welcome to Superstar Dim Sum & Seafood Restaurant, a Chinese restaurant located at 88 E 4th Ave in San Mateo, California. This establishment offers a combination of dim sum and seafood dishes, catering to a variety of preferences within Chinese cuisine. Based on customer reviews, Superstar Dim Sum & Seafood Restaurant presents a mixed experience, with highlights in food quality and potential drawbacks in service efficiency and restaurant temperature.
One of the primary features of Superstar Dim Sum & Seafood Restaurant, according to a positive review, is the quality and taste of its food, particularly its dim sum offerings. The reviewer expressed enjoyment of the meal, noting that all the dishes ordered were tasty and fresh. A significant advantage highlighted was the absence of MSG in their food preparation, which left diners feeling comfortable and not excessively thirsty after eating. This could be a major draw for health-conscious individuals or those sensitive to MSG.
Specific food highlights mentioned in the positive review include:
- Steamed Chicken: Described as tender and flavorful, suggesting a well-prepared and enjoyable poultry dish.
- Dim Sum Varieties (Shumai and Baked BBQ Pork Buns): Lauded as delicious and well-prepared, indicating that their dim sum selection is a strong point. Shumai, a type of steamed dumpling, and baked BBQ pork buns are classic dim sum items, and positive feedback on these suggests a mastery of traditional flavors and techniques.
- Fresh Vegetables: The vegetables served were noted for their freshness and ability to complement the other dishes, indicating a balanced and well-rounded menu.
However, another customer's experience paints a different picture, particularly regarding the service. This reviewer reported a significant delay in receiving their order. After the initial steamed pork buns arrived promptly, the second item (sweet and sour chicken) took a considerable amount of time, and the third item (chow mein) never arrived even after a 40-minute wait. The reviewer also noted a lack of communication from the waitress regarding the status of their food. Furthermore, they observed that a party who arrived much later was attended to and received their food in a timely manner, leading to a negative perception of the service provided to them.
The contrasting service experiences suggest potential inconsistencies in the restaurant's operational efficiency, particularly when dealing with multiple orders simultaneously. While one reviewer found the service to be friendly and responsive once attention was gained, they also noted a lack of circulating staff, requiring customers to approach them for assistance. The warmth and responsiveness of the staff were seen as compensating for this lack of availability. However, the second review indicates that this warmth and responsiveness were not consistently applied, leading to a highly unsatisfactory experience for that customer.
Regarding the atmosphere, one reviewer described the restaurant as clean and welcoming. However, they also mentioned that it was slightly chilly due to a lack of HVAC heating. This is a practical consideration for diners, suggesting that bringing an extra layer of clothing might be advisable for comfort, especially during colder months or evenings. Despite this minor inconvenience, the overall atmosphere was still perceived as pleasant.
The stark contrast in service experiences is a crucial point for potential customers to consider. While the food, especially the dim sum, seems to be a strong suit for Superstar Dim Sum & Seafood Restaurant, the efficiency and consistency of the service appear to be areas of concern based on at least one customer's account. The positive reviewer was willing to overlook the lack of circulating staff due to their friendliness, but the negative reviewer cited poor customer service as a reason to avoid the restaurant and seek better options elsewhere in downtown San Mateo.
Currently, there is no information available regarding specific promotions or special offers at Superstar Dim Sum & Seafood Restaurant from these reviews. Additionally, checking online platforms or social media associated with the restaurant might provide updates on promotions.
In conclusion, Superstar Dim Sum & Seafood Restaurant in San Mateo offers tasty and fresh food, with its dim sum and MSG-free options being notable highlights. The atmosphere is reported to be clean and welcoming, though potentially chilly. However, the service seems to be inconsistent, with one reviewer praising the friendly and responsive staff (albeit noting their limited availability), while another experienced significant delays and poor communication. Potential customers should weigh the positive feedback on food quality against the reported issues with service efficiency. If seeking a dim sum restaurant with MSG-free options and are prepared for potentially needing to seek out staff, Superstar might be worth a try. However, those prioritizing prompt and attentive service might want to consider the negative experience shared by another customer. To inquire about the menu, services (dine-in, takeout, delivery), and any current promotions, contacting the restaurant directly is recommended.

Customer Reviews
I really enjoyed this dim sum restaurant! All the dishes we ordered were tasty, fresh, and notably free from MSG, leaving us comfortable and not overly thirsty after the meal—a big plus. Food Highlights: The steamed chicken was tender and flavorful. The dim sum varieties like shumai and Baked BBQ Pork buns were delicious and well-prepared. The vegetables tasted fresh and complemented the other dishes nicely. Service: The service is friendly and responsive once you get their attention, but there are not many staff members circulating, so you might need to approach them for assistance. Still, their warmth and responsiveness made up for this. Atmosphere: The restaurant atmosphere was clean and welcoming, though slightly chilly due to a lack of HVAC heating. Wearing an extra layer of clothing easily solves this minor inconvenience. Overall, a great place for dim sum, especially for those sensitive to MSG or looking for a healthier dining option. Just remember to dress warmly!
Went in this evening with my partner and only ordered three items, first item(steamed pork buns) came in right away but then second item (sweet and sour chicken) took a while and finally the chow main never came. At this point me and my partner had been waiting for almost 40 minutes and not once did the waitress update on the status of the food. Not to mention a party of 4 came in like 25 minutes after us and were being attended and receiving their food on a timely manner. At the hour mark we told the waitress just to give the bill for the two items, Paid and left. There are better options in downtown San Mateo with outstanding customer service, this place ain’t it, stay away.
The food was authentic, very affordable prices compared to other dim sum spots in San Mateo. I arrived at 12pm and there were plenty of seats, but the place quickly filled up afterward. There are two menus. I don't know why. I would grab both because some things I usually get are in the other menu.
Quite disappointing overall. Came on a weekend for dimsum lunch, didn't have to wait for a table. Ordered, took very long for any food to come out, and it was only coming out 1 plate every 10 mins. Dim sum taste was below average. Only good item was the congee. For some reason, the cold water tasted very 'dusty' and unclean?
Best congee (rice porridge) served in San Mateo. Friendly service, wide space and clean, then good choices of dim-sum items. The large karaoke screens are a bit annoying but good for killing a time of waiting foods.
