About Sukey's China Restaurant

Welcome to Sukey's China Restaurant, a local Chinese dining establishment located at 730 E Edwardsville Rd, Wood River, IL 62095, USA. As a Chinese restaurant serving the Wood River community, Sukey's China Restaurant offers a variety of Chinese dishes for its patrons. You can contact them at (618) 251-4052 or via mobile phone at +1 618-251-4052.

Customer reviews for Sukey's China Restaurant present a somewhat mixed picture, highlighting both positive and negative aspects of the dining experience. One reviewer noted that the building itself is old, although the interior is clean. They also observed that the decor and lighting appeared dated. This initial impression almost led them to leave, but they decided to stay after being greeted by a "very nice lady." However, this reviewer experienced a slight language barrier when asking questions, suggesting that clear and perhaps louder communication might be necessary. They also mentioned receiving dinner portions and prices for a lunch visit, which resulted in a $36 bill for two people, deemed expensive for the quantity received. The beef pepper steak they ordered was described as tasting "ok," with a sauce similar to homemade beef gravy rather than typical Chinese spices. The meat was tender, and the vegetables were fresh and crisp. However, the egg roll was criticized for smelling like it had been fried in old oil and containing mostly meat with very few vegetables, encased in thin, crispy phyllo-like dough. The fried rice was described as "awful," dried out, hard, and stale, with no amount of provided sauce packets or crusty soy sauce bottle helping its flavor. The experience was further marred by a lack of soda refills and the presence of flies. Despite the exceptionally kind service from the lady, this reviewer concluded it was a "one and done" visit.

In contrast, another reviewer had a significantly more positive experience, stating that the food "never fails to make my day better." They specifically praised the fried rice as "the best I've had in years" and noted that everything is always hot and fresh, making it a "perfect treat." This review offers a starkly different perspective on the food quality, particularly the fried rice, which was heavily criticized by the other reviewer.

An edit to one of the reviews, dated July 29, 2024, specifically mentions and praises the "Chop Chae (sweet potato starch noodles) with carrots, beef, onion, green onion," describing it as "so comforting and well made." This suggests that Sukey's China Restaurant offers this Korean-Chinese fusion dish and that it is well-received by at least one customer.

Considering these reviews, the environment of Sukey's China Restaurant is described as being in an old building with dated decor and lighting, although the interior is clean. This might be a point of consideration for customers who prioritize a modern or updated ambiance. However, the kindness of the staff, particularly one lady mentioned in a review, suggests a welcoming service despite the building's age.

In terms of services, Sukey's China Restaurant likely offers standard options for a Chinese restaurant, which typically include:

  • Dine-in: Both reviews indicate dining at the restaurant. Customers can expect to be served at tables within the establishment.
  • Takeout: Given that it is a standard Chinese restaurant, takeout service is highly probable. Customers can likely place orders over the phone or in person to take away.
  • Delivery: Delivery service is not explicitly mentioned in the reviews. Local users interested in delivery should contact Sukey's China Restaurant directly to inquire about its availability and any associated delivery areas or fees.

The service experience seems to be a mix. While one reviewer encountered a slight language barrier and an issue with lunch pricing, they also noted the exceptional kindness of the staff. The other positive reviewer did not mention any service-related issues, focusing solely on the excellent food quality.

Features of Sukey's China Restaurant, based on the customer reviews, include:

  • Potentially Excellent Fried Rice: One reviewer highly praised it as the best they've had in years, while another found it to be awful. This suggests a possible inconsistency or differing preferences.
  • Well-Received Chop Chae: The sweet potato starch noodle dish with vegetables and beef is described as comforting and well-made.
  • Fresh Vegetables in Some Dishes: The beef pepper steak was noted to have fresh and crisp vegetables.
  • Tender Meat: The beef in the pepper steak was described as tender.
  • Kind Service: At least one staff member is highlighted for exceptional kindness.

However, potential drawbacks mentioned include the old building and dated decor, a possible language barrier with staff, potential issues with order accuracy (getting dinner prices at lunch), inconsistencies in food quality (specifically the fried rice and egg roll), and issues like lack of soda refills and the presence of flies.

Promotional information is not included in the provided text. Chinese restaurants often offer lunch specials, combination meals, or discounts on certain days or for specific order amounts. To find out if Sukey's China Restaurant is currently running any promotions, local users should check if they have a website or social media presence, or contact them directly by phone.

In conclusion, Sukey's China Restaurant in Wood River, IL, offers a local Chinese dining option with a history reflected in its older building and decor. Customer experiences vary, with one reporting significant issues with pricing, food quality (fried rice and egg roll), and service (language barrier, no refills, flies), while another praises the excellent, hot, and fresh food, particularly the fried rice and the Chop Chae. The kindness of at least one staff member is noted. Potential customers should be aware of the mixed feedback and the described environment. For those interested in trying their cuisine, especially the praised fried rice and Chop Chae, or who value kind service over modern ambiance, Sukey's China Restaurant might be worth a visit. To inquire about delivery services and any current promotions, it is recommended to contact them directly at (618) 251-4052 or +1 618-251-4052 or visit their location at 730 E Edwardsville Rd, Wood River, IL 62095, USA.

First be aware the building is old. Clean inside but old. The decor and the lighting is definitely something from long ago. When I first stepped in I almost ran but a very nice lady showed up and I stepped forward. Not surprisingly a slight language barrier in her understanding my questions. I guess I should have talked louder and asked more questions. It was lunch so I thought we’d get lunch servings and prices but having not specified she gave us dinner prices. $36 for two. That’s a lot for what one gets. I ordered beef pepper steak and it tasted ok. The sauce tasted like my gravy when I make beef and gravy. None of the spices I’d expect. Meat was tender and vegetables fresh and crisp. Egg roll smelt as if it had been fried in old oil. Didn’t see much in the way of veggies. Seemed like meat and rice with phyllo dough. Thin layers of dough fried very crisp. My husband had teriyaki chicken no veggies. Good serving. He liked it. He also had wonton soup that he said wasn’t bad. The fried rice was awful. Dried out almost to point of hard. Stale bland flavor. Nothing helped it. Packets of sauce and soy in a bottle that was crusty on top. No soda refills. Fought two persistent flies. I’ve driven by this place for years and hoped I’d find a new favorite for Mondays but it’s not to be. Exceptionally kind lady and sorry to say it’s a one and done

The boneless hot braised and sweet n sour chicken was good.. Prolly enough to feed 2 to 4 people per special.. The fried rice is prolly the best in the area.. However the crab rangoon was not sweet like I like mine to be..
