About Steam
Steam, located in Palo Alto, provides a reliable option for Chinese cuisine, often noted as being slightly more affordable than nearby establishments like Taste. This restaurant is also recognized as a good spot in Palo Alto for dim sum, although some patrons find the dim sum prices to still be on the higher side, a common characteristic of dining in Palo Alto.
The menu at Steam features a variety of dishes, with the cumin lamb receiving positive feedback for its flavor, although it is typically prepared with a noticeable level of salt. Another enjoyed dish is the sautéed broccoli. For those looking for smaller plates, the crispy shrimp balls are highly recommended, accompanied by a delicious sauce. Customers have observed that the main dishes at Steam tend to be priced more competitively compared to the smaller dim sum offerings, suggesting that focusing on main courses might offer better value.
While one customer experienced slightly slow service with a delay in the rice arriving after the cumin lamb, they also mentioned that previous visits did not have this issue, indicating that this might have been an isolated incident. Generally, the service is implied to be adequate.
The interior of Steam is described as really new and clean, with a modern and warm feel. Notably, the restaurant boasts a surprisingly large and nice bathroom, which one reviewer likened to that of an expensive establishment, contributing to the overall pleasant environment.
Parking in the Palo Alto area is generally manageable due to the presence of many parking garages, making it relatively easy for patrons to find a spot when visiting Steam. For those who enjoy dining with their pets, Steam offers dog-friendly outdoor seating.
It's important to be aware that Steam adds an 18% gratuity to all orders. Additionally, the kitchen closes at 8:30 PM, although the restaurant remains open until 9:00 PM. If you're looking for a Chinese restaurant with a modern ambiance, a selection of both main dishes and dim sum, convenient parking, and the option for outdoor seating with your dog, Steam could be a good choice, keeping in mind that it may be considered a bit pricey, especially for dim sum.

Solid place to get Chinese food that’s a little cheaper than Taste down the street. They’re also a good place to get dim sum in Palo Alto (although in my opinion the dim sum prices are still pricey, but that’s Palo Alto for you). This time we got the cumin lamb and sautéed broccoli with some white rice. The cumin lamb was very good. It was a bit salty, but this dish usually is. The service was a little slow this time. The cumin lamb was served before the rice so we had to wait a little to get our rice to eat with the dish. But I’ve gone before and haven’t had that problem with the service before so it could just be that time. The inside’s really new and clean. It feels modern and warm. Also the bathroom’s surprisingly large and nice. It definitely feels like an expensive restaurant bathroom. Parking: There are many parking garages in Palo Alto so it’s not too hard for us to find parking
Good food, a bit pricey. Try the crispy shrimp balls, they’re really good and so is the sauce. The main dishes are priced more competitively than the small dishes; if you eat mostly dim sum the price quickly adds up. 18% gratuity is added to all orders. Kitchen closes at 8:30 PM but the place stays open until 9. There is dog friendly outdoor seating.
The schezwan chicken and the eggplant with chicken claypot stood out the most. The rest of the dishes were average. The dumplings were disappointing as they were pretty bland. Service was good.
Menu items are hit or miss but the hits are on a different level. The pea shoot and prawn dumplings are amazing but the mapo tofu is unbelievable. Best I’ve had. It’s on the sweeter side, but not too much and the balance of flavors just knocks it out of the park. Incredible. A must-try.
Great tasting dumplings. My fav were the pork, and the shrimp. Ordered stir fried fish with black bean sauce. Perfectly cooked. Spinach w/garlic. Won tong soup. All the food was tasteful and not overly spicy, salty or greasy. Will definitely come again!
