About Spices

Spices, a Chinese Restaurant located at 291 6th Ave in the Richmond District of San Francisco, offers local diners a taste of Hunan cuisine, known for its bold and often spicy flavors. Based on customer reviews, Spices provides a dining experience characterized by flavorful dishes, generous portions, and a potentially quiet ambiance, particularly during off-peak hours.

One reviewer recounted having the "whole restaurant for ourselves on a quiet weekday lunch hour," suggesting that Spices might offer a more tranquil dining environment, especially during less busy times. This could be appealing to those seeking a peaceful meal. While the decor and overall ambiance are not extensively described, the reviewer's positive impression of their first-time dining experience indicates a generally pleasant setting.

The service at Spices is not explicitly detailed in the provided reviews, but the positive overall experiences suggest that the service is likely adequate and contributes to a satisfying meal. The focus of the reviews is primarily on the quality and taste of the food, implying that the culinary offerings are the main draw of this establishment.

A significant feature of Spices is its Hunan cuisine, which is well-regarded by customers. Several dishes have received high praise. The "iron pot" is mentioned as a particular favorite, described as a comforting, spicy, and flavorful dish perfect for those seeking warmth and joy in their meal. The vegetarian small iron pot, priced at $30.99, is noted for its generous portion size, capable of being shared between 2-3 people or enjoyed as multiple meals by a single diner. Its compatibility with rice is also highlighted, suggesting it's a substantial and satisfying option.

Another dish that stands out in the reviews is the cumin lamb. One customer specifically stated that the cumin lamb was "some of the best dishes we had in a while," indicating its exceptional flavor and quality. This suggests that Spices excels in preparing this popular dish, making it a strong recommendation for those who enjoy lamb with aromatic spices.

The fried rice at Spices also received positive feedback, with one reviewer including it among the best dishes they had in a while. This indicates that even seemingly standard Chinese fare is prepared to a high standard at this restaurant.

However, not all dishes received universal praise. The calamari was specifically mentioned as something to "skip," as it "didn’t taste fresh." This suggests that while many dishes are well-received, there might be some inconsistencies in the quality of certain items, particularly seafood. Diners might want to take this feedback into consideration when making their selections.

In conclusion, Spices on 6th Avenue in San Francisco offers a promising Hunan culinary experience characterized by flavorful and generously portioned dishes. The iron pot, particularly the vegetarian option, and the cumin lamb are highly recommended, along with the well-prepared fried rice. The restaurant might offer a quieter ambiance, especially during off-peak hours. However, feedback suggests that the calamari might not meet the same standard of freshness as other dishes. For those looking to explore the spicy and comforting flavors of Hunan cuisine in San Francisco, Spices appears to be a worthwhile destination. To learn about any potential promotions, direct contact with the restaurant is advised.

Had the whole restaurant for ourselves on a quiet weekday lunch hour. First time dining here and pretty impressed with what we ordered! Would skip Calamari, didn’t taste fresh! Fried rice and cumin lamb were some of the best dishes we had in a while!

Their iron pot is one of my favorite comfort foods in the city. It's perfect for when I want to feel full of warmth and joy while craving something spicy and flavorful. The portion size of the vegetarian small iron pot ($30.99) is generous and can easily be shared between 2-3 people, or enjoyed solo and split into multiple meals! Pairs well with rice.

Have been wanting to try this place for a while. Got the deep fried fish fillet with explosive chili, and while the flavor was good, I was incredibly disappointed by how little fish there was in every piece, and how heavily breaded it was. I ended up throwing the meal in the trash after picking apart multiple pieces looking for actual fish that I could bite into, and finding most pieces were 75% breading.

the explosive spicy chicken (there is a tofu and fish version too) is sooo amazing. So are the veggies that are sauteed with garlic. This is my 3rd time coming here this month and it’s always a great experience — friendly staff too. Bring a friend because the portions are large.

Go to this Chinese place for clean, well-prepared, and delicious food. Their green bean and eggplant dishes are excellent, and of course, the dry pot is great as well.
