About Sichuan Taste

Located at 515 SW 4th Ave, Portland, OR 97204, Sichuan Taste has quickly established itself as a must-visit destination for those seeking truly authentic Chinese cuisine, specifically the bold and aromatic flavors of Sichuan. Often stumbled upon by happy chance, this restaurant is lauded as a hidden gem, providing a culinary experience that genuinely transports diners to the heart of China. For anyone in Portland with a love for Chinese food, particularly those who appreciate a genuine taste of Sichuan, this establishment comes highly recommended.

The environment at Sichuan Taste, while not explicitly detailed in terms of decor, can be inferred to be a comfortable and functional space typical of a dedicated Chinese restaurant focused on serving excellent food. The fact that patrons describe it as a "gem" and an authentic spot suggests a setting that, while perhaps not luxurious, is clean, inviting, and conducive to enjoying a hearty meal. The focus here is clearly on the culinary journey, allowing the vibrant flavors of the dishes to take center stage. Its central location on SW 4th Ave makes it easily accessible for locals and visitors alike, whether they are exploring downtown Portland or passing through en route to other destinations like the premium outlets.

The service at Sichuan Taste is described as "fine, typical of a regular Chinese restaurant." This generally implies efficient and straightforward service focused on getting the delicious food to the table. While one customer noted an awkward moment regarding tipping, which highlights a cultural difference in service expectations, it doesn't detract from the overall quality of the food and the restaurant's ability to deliver an authentic dining experience. The primary goal of the staff is to ensure a smooth and satisfying meal for all guests, and they generally succeed in this regard.

The culinary features of Sichuan Taste are undoubtedly its strongest appeal, offering an authentic glimpse into regional Chinese cooking. The restaurant specializes in Sichuan cuisine, known for its bold, spicy, and often numbing flavors achieved through liberal use of Sichuan peppercorns, chili peppers, and other aromatic spices. The authenticity of the dishes is a recurring theme in customer reviews, with one visitor declaring it "really authentic Chinese cuisine to the max!" This commitment to genuine flavors is what sets Sichuan Taste apart.

Among the highly recommended dishes that showcase the restaurant's prowess are:

  • Sichuan Popcorn Chicken: This dish comes with the highest recommendation, earning a triple checkmark of approval. Customers rave that "It wasn’t too salty, and everything was perfect!" This indicates a perfectly balanced flavor profile, crispy texture, and an overall enjoyable experience, making it a must-try for any first-time visitor.
  • Pickled Fish Soup (酸菜鱼): Another triumph, this soup garnered immense praise, with one customer noting, "it reminded me of my mom’s cooking—so good! The soup blended perfectly with the fish." This personal endorsement speaks volumes about the dish's authentic taste and comforting quality, hitting all the right notes for those familiar with homemade Chinese cooking.
  • Dried Beef (干锅肥牛): While one reviewer hadn't tried their to-go order yet, the inclusion of such a classic Sichuan dry pot dish on the menu further emphasizes the restaurant's commitment to offering a wide array of authentic regional specialties.

While the vast majority of the culinary offerings are highly praised, customer reviews also provide objective feedback on other items. The Soup Dumplings (小笼包) were noted to have skin that was "a bit too hard to bite," suggesting an area for potential refinement. Similarly, the Rice was described as "slightly undercooked," indicating some minor inconsistencies. However, these specific points are outweighed by the overwhelming positive feedback on the signature dishes, which truly capture the essence of Sichuan cuisine.

A significant and universally praised feature of Sichuan Taste is the **super generous portions**. Diners consistently mention the ample size of the servings, which not only provides excellent value but also ensures that no one leaves hungry. This makes Sichuan Taste an ideal spot for sharing dishes among a group, allowing for a broader tasting experience across their authentic menu. The fact that the food "really warmed our stomachs" speaks to both the comforting nature of the dishes and their hearty portions.

Regarding promotional information, Sichuan Taste’s most compelling promotion is the quality and authenticity of its food, as echoed in glowing customer testimonials. While no specific discount offers or loyalty programs are mentioned, the powerful word-of-mouth recommendations, such as "Strongly recommended if you love Chinese food!" and the repeated praise for specific dishes, act as the most effective form of marketing. The clear emphasis on authentic flavors and generous portions serves as an ongoing enticement for anyone looking for a genuine Chinese dining experience in Portland. Its convenient location on SW 4th Ave, near downtown attractions and transit, also makes it an accessible option for spontaneous culinary adventures.

I stumbled upon this place while visiting Portland from Seattle. We ordered: Sichuan Popcorn Chicken (highly recommended! It wasn’t too salty, and everything was perfect!) ✅✅✅ Pickled Fish Soup (酸菜鱼) (it reminded me of my mom’s cooking—so good! The soup blended perfectly with the fish.) ✅✅✅ Soup Dumplings (小笼包) (the skin was a bit too hard to bite) ❌❌❌ Rice (it was slightly undercooked, in my opinion) 🙅❌❌❌ To-go: Dried Beef (干锅肥牛) (I haven’t tried this one yet but will update soon.) The service was fine, typical of a regular Chinese restaurant. However, we felt a bit awkward when the server mentioned that the tip wasn’t included in the bill and hoped we would leave one. In my culture, that’s considered rude since tipping is optional. We already knew the tip policy from the receipt.

Disappointed. I ordered the spicy dry pot stir fried pork intestine. It wasn't spicy. I should've asked for extra spicy because this sichuian place is americanized/ appeals to the portland palette. Usually the dish has stir fried bell pepper, a little onion, sometimes celery. This had potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower. Huhh? Would've been forgivable if it was actually spicy and numbing! There also wasn't a lot of meat in the nearly $20 dish- lots of filler between the broccoli, cauliflower, potato and celery. Def avoid if you want authentic Sichuan SPICY intestine stir fry. The young woman as the server/cashier was very nice ! Perhaps their other dishes are good?

By far the best Chinese food I have ever had. And not your typical Americanized Chinese food. If you’re looking for a real flavor of China, I definitely recommend this place. They have things on the menu that I have never seen in this country before. Their portions are huge and you cannot finish them. Everything is very flavorful. They still have your standard stuff like orange chicken, but I would recommend trying anything off the menu. Everything we have tried has been excellent. This is our fifth time coming back here because it’s so good. We just ordered four entrées one appetizer and two bowls of rice and the total was $72. You cannot beat this price, especially for the taste and size of the portions.

Food was absolutely amazing. My partner and I got Cashew Chicken, Sichuan Fried Fish, and Soup Dumplings to share. We both can eat quite a bit, and we were stuffed leaving this place. Portions were big, so you don't necessarily need the side of rice. Food came out super hot and very quick as well, though we arrived around 3:15pm. All around, a place we'll want to try out again (we were so hungry and the food was so good we forgot to take photos).
