About Sichuan Gourmet House
Welcome to Sichuan Gourmet House, your local destination in Newton Highlands, Massachusetts, for a genuine taste of Sichuan cuisine. As a dedicated Chinese restaurant, we strive to bring the bold and distinctive flavors of Sichuan right to your table.
Our menu features a variety of classic Sichuan dishes. According to customer reviews, the Chengdu dry chicken with red chilies ($21.95) offers a delicious flavor with a mild mala numbing spice, though some find the breading slightly over-fried. The stir-fried chicken with black bean sauce, green bell pepper, and onion ($18.95) is praised for its full-flavored onions, although the chicken might be a little salty. A standout dish seems to be the beef chow fan ($18.95), lauded for its exceptional smoky flavor. While the hot and sour soup ($4.95) contains all the traditional ingredients, some diners have found it to be flavorless and salty.
The restaurant offers a clean environment with decent table settings and generally provides fast service for dine-in customers. Ample parking is also available for your convenience.
Please be aware that some customers have reported inconsistencies with takeout order wait times, occasionally experiencing significant delays beyond the quoted time. Additionally, some reviewers have noted potential communication challenges at the reception/counter, possibly due to language differences.
Despite these service-related comments, many patrons appreciate the quality of our food. Dishes like the Chengdu chicken and certain soup dumplings have been particularly well-received. However, feedback on some of the baos has been less favorable.
Whether you're looking to dine in and experience the vibrant atmosphere or prefer to enjoy our flavorful dishes in the comfort of your home, Sichuan Gourmet House offers a wide selection of Sichuan specialties. Found this place by chance while searching for a place for quick dinner in the area. Food was surprisingly authentic sichuan and thoroughly enjoyed all dishes we tried. -Chengdu dry chicken with red chilies $21.95 delicious flavor with mild mala numbing spices, but breaded chicken pieces seem overly deep fried. -Stir fried chicken with black bean sauce, green bell pepper and onion $18.95 even onions had full flavor and tasty. Chicken was little salty though. -Beef Chow Fan $18.95 best smokey flavor I've tasted in years -hot and sour soup $4.95 with all the right ingredients it was still flavorless but salty. Place was clean with decent table settings, fast service. Decent size parking available.
Mostly used to get takeout but we have eaten here a few times as it was our go to neighbourhood Chinese place until we had 4 different occasions where they told us the order would be ready and then made us wait for over 30 mins to pick up- at that point we gave up and stopped going especially the last occasion when they seemed to be accusing me of ordering stuff that takes time- well they could just have told me the order would be ready later…!! In terms of food we Particularly enjoyed the Chengdu’s chicken and some of the soup dumplings are good. Would not vouch for some of the baos however That said - please expect unfriendly service esp at the reception/ counter and this is probably more due to them having trouble with the language rather than them misbehaving on purpose. One time while I was picking up - the lady told me it was not here but in a currently defunct building next door that I had to pick up- inspite of showing her the restaurant name etc and then finally she believed me when I used the telephone number on my online order and her phone rang! Also the waits are sometimes crazily long - inspite of whatever the apps tell you- it’s pretty rough that way!!! But food is good
I ordered Dan-Dan noodles for myself. It was supposed to be a spicy dish. My friend who I was eating with told me she had eaten the dish before and found it too spicy for her (in front of the waiter.) I said I'm not worried, I have a high spice tolerance and I was not planning on sharing my dish with the rest of the table. The waiter asked me if I wanted the dish made mild per my friends recommendation and I told her no, make it spicy per usual. The dish is brought out and it was very bland and not spicy at all...when I asked the waiter why, she said she had the chef make it medium spicy...I am irritated because it was not made how I ordered it and was very bland. It barely had any kick at all so I think she had the chef make it mild level spicy. It was very frustrating that the waiter did not respect my wishes. Also, there was hardly any pork in the dish....they were skimpy with the portions of meat. Won't be coming here again.
Great food and service. Definitely authentic food. The medium spicy is a little spicier than other places, so do be aware. The kungpao chicken was a great dish, a little saltier than normal. The pork soup and soup dumplings were on point. Def a good place to try.
Despite a very delicious meal. This one gets the GROSSLY UNHYGIENIC award!. 🤮. Decided to use the restroom, and while waiting for my friend, I observed the server setting tables with fresh utensils wrapped in linen napkins. These napkins are being placed on top of plates. One falls to the floor, and I watch in HORROR as the said napkin is returned from the floor and placed on the plate!! The table setting process continues. Upon leaving, i let her know I saw and very discreetly suggested she change the setting. She asked me why this must be explained?! Then, she simply ignored me. I leave and observe for a while - no action. I call and speak with someone - no acknowledgment of a problem. Folks, I would say this place is GROSS!!. If you do that in plain sight I’m not confident about what happens in the kitchen. Simply GROSS! & plain NASTY! Stay away. Praying I’m not sick.
