About Shuang Cheng

Welcome to Shuang Cheng, a Chinese restaurant located at 1320 4th St SE in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Situated in the vicinity of the University of Minnesota, Shuang Cheng offers a classic Chinese dining experience characterized by generous portions and a "homely" atmosphere. As a Chinese restaurant, Shuang Cheng aims to provide a comforting and satisfying meal, serving a variety of familiar dishes to the local community and university population.

The environment at Shuang Cheng is described by a reviewer as "homely," with "various pretty paintings on the wall," suggesting a warm and inviting, albeit perhaps not overly modern, decor. The provision of a complimentary glass of water and a pot of oolong tea upon being seated adds to the feeling of coziness and special attention to diners. This welcoming ambiance makes Shuang Cheng a potentially comfortable spot for both individual diners and families looking for a relaxed meal.

The service at Shuang Cheng is generally viewed positively. One customer described their server as "friendly and fast," indicating an efficient and pleasant dining experience. The initial offering of water and tea also points to attentive service. Additionally, the inclusion of a fortune cookie with the bill is mentioned as a nice touch, contributing to the overall positive impression of the service.

A significant feature of Shuang Cheng, highlighted by multiple reviewers, is the exceptionally generous portion sizes. One family noted that their order was "huggeee," enough to potentially feed 5 to 7 people, requiring them to call a friend to help consume the leftovers. Another reviewer who ordered the pineapple duck also mentioned a "generous serving," taking half of their meal home. This emphasis on large portions suggests that Shuang Cheng offers good value for money, particularly for those with a hearty appetite or those looking to share dishes.

The menu at Shuang Cheng features a range of classic Chinese dishes. One standout dish mentioned is the "pineapple duck," which was described as "nice." The reviewer noted that while the sweet and sour sauce was purely sweet, the addition of a few drops of soy sauce enhanced the flavor. The fact that the fried duck remained crunchy under the sauce was also praised as an "excellent experience." Other dishes ordered by a family included sauteed morning glory with garlic/ginger, sesame chicken, pork with veggies & garlic sauce, and mafo tofu, indicating a diverse selection catering to various tastes.

The feedback on specific dishes varies. The sauteed morning glory received a positive comment, with one reviewer stating they "grew up on this dish, no complaint." The sauteed pork with veggies in garlic sauce was lauded as the "best dish of the meal" and reportedly tasted even better as leftovers. However, the sesame chicken received a mixed review. While the flavor was described as "on point," the reviewer noted a common practice in some Chinese restaurants where some pieces appear to be just fried dough coated with sauce, potentially creating a visual impression of more chicken than is actually present.

The mafo tofu was also met with mixed reactions. One reviewer found it "slightly sweet" for their taste and would have preferred the inclusion of Sichuan pepper. However, they did appreciate the generous amount of ground pork in the dish, noting it was the most compared to other Chinese restaurants in the vicinity. They ultimately adjusted the flavor to their liking by adding chili oil, suggesting that while the base preparation might not suit all palates, customization is possible with available condiments.

I had a great lunch! I ordered the pineapple duck, and it was nice. The sweet and sour sauce was purely sweet, but a few drops of soy sauce made the flavor more complete. I don't know how the fried duck stayed crunchy under all the sauce, but it made for an excellent experience. The serving was generous, so I took home half of my meal. When I sat down, I was given a glass of water and a pot of oolong tea, which made the experience feel cozy and special. My server was friendly and fast. I also enjoyed getting a fortune cookie with my bill. It may be cheesy, but I enjoy fortune cookies and seeing if they fit the day's occasion. It's definitely worth trying another dish someday! The decoration was homely, with various pretty paintings on the wall.

Came here for lunch with the fam. Classic Chinese restaurant with simple good cooking. We ordered saute morning glory with garlic/ginger, sesame chicken, pork with veggies & garlic sauce and mafo tofu. The portions were huggeee, enough to feed 5-7 people. Had to call a friend to help us eat. The mafo tofu was slightly sweet for my taste. They gave plenty of ground pork; the most out of all the Chinese restaurants within a 20 miles radius. Taste is a preference thing and I would’ve like it more if they had put some sichuan pepper in this dish. I had to add their chili oil to make it my liking and reduce the sweetness. Sesame chicken: flavor was on point. All Chinese restaurants do this: some of the chicken pieces had no chicken in them. Just fried dough coated with sauce (can be deceiving to make it look like a lot of food on the plate). Morning Glory: I grew up on this dish, no complaint. Saute pork with veggies garlic sauce: best dish of the meal. We took left over home and it tasted even better 7 hours later.

The dining room area could use a little bit of an update. They have multiple little banquet rooms for larger parties. “Service with a smile” made it more welcoming and comfortable. I ordered so much food!!! I do this all the time when I go to a new place. I want to try it all! The plates in the photos were SO good! Singapore noodles, half order of steamed Chinese broccoli, salt n peppa wings, and crispy golden garlic with shrimp. I have a ton of leftovers and plan on eating this beautiful food for the next couple of days. This is a definite “get in my YAP” as fast as you can moment with tiny chopsticks at hand. I’m coming back to try more dishes once my leftovers are all eaten up. Whist with me?!?! Oh… My… Dang!

Minneapolis favorite for Chinese Food. Got carry out here and was very satisfied. I imagine dining is also a good experience. In a pretty urban neighborhood, so parking could be a hassle. I know it was in terms of doing pick up. Fortunately, we had a separate driver who could wait outside while we picked up the to go order. Would definitely eat here again.

Great place for Cantonese-style dishes, this was one of my parents' fave places to dine at when visiting. Recently, I stopped by for take out and had two excellent dishes: beef chow fun with Chinese broccoli and beef with mustard greens. Fun place to go with a group so you can eat family style and try different dishes. In the past, I've also really enjoyed their mushu pork but that's better when served at the restaurant.
