About Shaoshan Impression
Welcome to Shaoshan Impression, a distinguished establishment in the Chinese Restaurant category, located at 14150 NE 20th St Ste C, Bellevue, WA 98007, USA. This restaurant offers local users a unique opportunity to experience the rich and distinctive flavors of Hunan cuisine, setting itself apart from the more commonly found Chinese restaurants in the Bellevue area. Based on customer feedback, Shaoshan Impression prides itself on its clean and inviting environment, exceptional and attentive service, and a menu featuring authentic Hunan dishes, many of which are known for their bold and spicy profiles.
The environment of Shaoshan Impression has been positively highlighted by patrons. Described as "bright airy, almost opulent," the restaurant maintains a high standard of cleanliness, which is particularly noteworthy and appreciated by diners. The well-lit and spacious interior creates a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere for guests, making it a pleasant place to enjoy a meal. The ambiance seems conducive to both individual diners and families, as one reviewer noted observing local families enjoying their time together at the restaurant.
The service at Shaoshan Impression is consistently praised for its attentiveness and warmth. Customers have described the staff as "friendly and prompt" even during busy periods. One reviewer specifically noted the tireless work ethic of the waitstaff, who are seen actively cleaning and ensuring that tables have water, indicating a strong commitment to customer comfort and satisfaction. The servers also demonstrate a helpful and considerate approach, such as providing a "friend to friend tone" in their warnings about the spiciness of certain dishes. Small details, such as a hot tea carafe waiting at the table and proactive tea carafe swaps, further enhance the dining experience, showcasing a dedication to customer care.
A key feature of Shaoshan Impression is its focus on Hunan cuisine, which is known for its bold flavors, liberal use of chili peppers, garlic, and shallots, and its emphasis on smoked and cured meats. The restaurant offers "two kinds of fiery dishes," suggesting a spectrum of spiciness to cater to different preferences, while also providing necessary warnings to those who might be sensitive to heat. The spiciness is described as intense enough to potentially induce an "adrenaline feast mode," appealing to those who enjoy a significant kick in their food without being overwhelmingly hot.
Based on customer reviews, several dishes stand out as popular and representative of the Hunan culinary experience offered at Shaoshan Impression. The Sichuan cold noodles, while originating from Sichuan cuisine, have been tried and enjoyed by customers at Shaoshan Impression on multiple occasions, indicating their presence and quality on the menu. Another mentioned dish is 黄花鱼 (yellow croaker), prepared in a way that has pleased diners. The A菜, a type of leafy green vegetable, also seems to be a well-received side dish.
毛氏红烧肉 (Mao's braised pork), a famous Hunan dish named after Chairman Mao Zedong, who was from Hunan province, is another highlight. This dish, typically featuring tender pieces of pork belly braised in a rich and savory sauce, is recommended as a non-spicy option, showcasing that Shaoshan Impression also caters to those who prefer milder flavors. The 湖南肉泡饭 (Hunan rice bubble soup) is another recommended dish for those seeking non-spicy options, suggesting a diverse menu that goes beyond just fiery fare. 茄子刀豆 (eggplant and string beans) is also mentioned as a good vegetarian option, indicating that the restaurant offers choices for various dietary preferences.
One reviewer noted that Shaoshan Impression is "quite unique among many already in Bellevue," highlighting its special focus on Hunan cuisine as a differentiator in a diverse culinary landscape. While most dishes are praised for having the "right amount of salt and not too oily," one customer mentioned that the quantity of some dishes might be "on the less side." However, this seems to be a minor point compared to the overall positive feedback on taste and quality.
Another highly recommended dish is the "fish with hot source on the burner," which suggests a visually appealing and flavorful presentation where the dish is kept warm at the table. The "stinky tofu with hot source" is also lauded for being "very crispy and tasty good," appealing to adventurous eaters seeking unique and bold flavors. The beef noodles, while having "tasteless" beef according to one review, were still enjoyed for their "thin noodles," indicating that even dishes with minor drawbacks can still have appealing elements.
Given the positive reviews and the indication of popularity (with a 20-minute wait on a Friday night for two people), Shaoshan Impression has likely established itself as a go-to destination for authentic Hunan cuisine in Bellevue. Local users looking to explore beyond the typical Chinese restaurant offerings and experience the distinct flavors of Hunan province would find Shaoshan Impression to be a compelling choice. The combination of a clean and pleasant environment, attentive and friendly service, and a menu filled with both fiery and milder authentic Hunan dishes makes it a standout in the local dining scene.

But a restaurant is this clean? They can keep the lights up; bright airy, almost opulent. I watched local families nuzzle each other and feed their children. Details matter; a hot tea carafe waiting at table, a friend to friend tone in the server’s warning about spiciness, a table dish warmer, a tea carafe swap out. Two kinds of fiery dishes; and warnings were necessary. Not panic attack hot but you may experience adrenaline feast mode. Great spot.
3rd time we tried Sichuan cold noodles, 黄花鱼, and A菜. 2nd time dinner today we were lucky to get seats early before 6pm. waiting time was about 20mins for two people on a Friday night. Again the service staffs were friendly and prompt even though they were very busy. The wait staffs were the most hardest workers I’ve ever seen and hope they are paid well. They do all the cleaning and bring water to the tables. We ordered 毛氏红烧肉,湖南肉泡饭 recommended for not spicy和茄子刀豆 were all good 😊 The new Hunan restaurant is indeed a quite unique among many already in Bellevue. The service is prompt and friendly. The staffs all work tirelessly. Beef noodles - beef is somehow tasteless but I love the thin noodles. Stinky tofu with hot source is very crispy and tasty good. Most dishes are all with the right amount of salt and not too oily. Though the quantity is on the less side. Also the fish with hot source on the burner is also very good
I was born in Hunan province of China, and I can confirm this restaurant offers authentic, traditional style Hunan cuisine. The stir-fried sea bass with house special stinky sauce is especially good, lots of flavors. Service is also top notch. Price is on the expensive side. I will come back to try other dishes on their menu.
This is surprisingly good authentic Chinese food. We waited about 25 mins for a Saturday lunch. Once seated, service is good and fast. Once you place order on your phone, waitress came right away to confirm the order and get fresh cooking going. Food came quickly and they were perfectly seasoned and cooked. The spiceness was just right for us with the two chili dishes. We had Hunan Style Smoked Sausage and it was the best I had in the US, Sautéed Pork With Green Pepper[Medium Spicy], the meat was cooked just right and super tasty, Hunan Style Braised Pork Cubes (毛式红烧肉), it was so good. Even the reheated left overs were super yummy. Definitely recommended and we will be going back. ~$80 and boxed leftover for another meal at home.
Great, authentic Hunan cuisine as someone with family there and has visited multiple times! Be warned these dishes are spicy though they can reduce the spiciness on request. Convenient, free parking lot serving this small shopping area as well.
