About Shangri-La
Welcome to Shangri-La, a Chinese restaurant situated at 784 Blossom Hill Rd in Los Gatos, California. Located within a town where the average lunch price is notably higher, Shangri-La positions itself as a more affordable option for those seeking Chinese cuisine in the area. While it might share some characteristics with the more casual "hole in the wall" spots, Shangri-La offers a cleaner and slightly more refined environment, according to customer feedback.
One of the key features of Shangri-La, appreciated by its patrons, is their practice of cooking dishes to order. This ensures that the food arrives at the table piping hot, enhancing the freshness and overall dining experience. This commitment to freshly prepared meals is a significant draw for those who value the immediacy and quality of cooked-to-order cuisine.
Among the dishes praised at Shangri-La is their hot and sour soup. One reviewer specifically noted that it was "on point," indicating a well-balanced and flavorful rendition of this popular Chinese soup. The same reviewer also highlighted the generous amount of bamboo shoots and mushrooms in their soup, suggesting that Shangri-La does not skimp on ingredients, particularly in well-liked items.
The reviewer also shared their experience with other dishes, including the chow mein and fried rice. While they found the chow mein to be not overly oily and the fried rice to be good, they felt the need to add chili oil, Sriracha, and a touch of sweet and sour sauce to achieve the nostalgic taste they preferred. This suggests that while the base preparations are decent, some diners might wish to customize the flavors to their personal liking with additional condiments.
Another dish that received positive feedback was the spring roll. It was described as being crispy on the outside and firm yet soft on the inside, indicating a well-executed texture. However, the reviewer noted the absence of a sweet and sour dipping sauce, which is a common accompaniment for spring rolls in many Chinese restaurants. This minor omission was noted but did not detract significantly from the overall positive impression of the spring roll itself.
Overall, one customer concluded that Shangri-La is a "great place" and offers the "best bang for your buck" for those in Los Gatos looking for affordable food. This endorsement highlights the value aspect of Shangri-La, especially when compared to the generally higher prices in the area. It suggests that diners can enjoy a satisfying meal without breaking the bank.
However, it is important to present a balanced view, as not all customer experiences have been entirely positive. Another reviewer expressed significant dissatisfaction with several dishes. They described the fried rice as "really dry and no color," resembling white rice mixed with vegetables and egg rather than a properly fried dish. The chow mein was criticized for lacking color and seasoning, with the noodles tasting uncooked and soggy. Similarly, the garlic chicken was described as having no color, and while the beef and broccoli were deemed "ok," the overall experience left the reviewer with a negative impression, vowing not to purchase food from Shangri-La again.
This stark contrast in reviews suggests a potential inconsistency in food preparation or varying expectations among customers. While some appreciate the cooked-to-order aspect and find certain dishes like the hot and sour soup and spring rolls to be satisfactory, others have experienced issues with the quality and preparation of dishes like the fried rice and chow mein.
Regarding the environment of Shangri-La, one reviewer mentioned it being "cleaner and a bit fancier" than the "hole in the wall" spots they were accustomed to in Oakland. This suggests that Shangri-La offers a more presentable and comfortable dining space than a very basic or run-down establishment. However, it is still perceived as being relatively casual and affordable within the context of Los Gatos.
Information about the services at Shangri-La is primarily gleaned from the food preparation style (cooked to order) and the availability of takeout (implied by the reviewer taking leftovers or potentially ordering to go). The service seems to be generally attentive, as one reviewer's positive experience suggests a willingness to cater to customer preferences, even if minor items like dipping sauce are occasionally missed.
Specific features of Shangri-La include its affordability within the Los Gatos area, the practice of cooking food to order ensuring hot meals, and the praised hot and sour soup and crispy spring rolls. The availability of a diverse menu, including chow mein and fried rice, caters to a range of tastes, although the quality of these items appears to be inconsistent based on the reviews.
No specific promotional information was available in the provided reviews. Local users interested in any special offers, lunch deals, or discounts should contact the restaurant directly to inquire. Supporting local restaurants like Shangri-La can often provide good value, especially in areas with a higher cost of living.
In conclusion, Shangri-La in Los Gatos offers a more affordable option for Chinese cuisine in a town known for higher prices, with the benefit of cooked-to-order meals. While some customers have praised dishes like the hot and sour soup and spring rolls, others have expressed disappointment with the quality and preparation of items such as the fried rice and chow mein. The environment is described as cleaner and slightly fancier than a basic "hole in the wall" but still casual. For local users seeking a budget-friendly Chinese meal in Los Gatos, Shangri-La might be worth trying, especially if they appreciate freshly cooked food and are interested in the highly-rated hot and sour soup and spring rolls. However, it is advisable to be aware of the mixed reviews regarding other menu items.

Co worker recommend to come here since I always talk about hole in the wall spots in the town.First and foremost this spot is definitely cleaner and a bit fancier than the hole in the wall spots in Oakland. Second this place is definitely the most affordable in all of Los Gatos where average price for lunch is 18 dollars and higher. But I see why my co workers said this is a hole in the wall spot for Los Gatos. They cook to order so your food come out piping hot. Hot and sour soup is on point. And there was a good amount of bamboo shoot in my soup with mushrooms. They didn’t skimp on one of my favorite type of soup. My chow main wasn’t super oily, fried rice is good too, what I needed was was chilli oil,Sriracha and a tiny bit of sweet and sour sauce to bring it to my nostalgic taste that I grew up eating. Their spring roll was crispy on the outside and firm but soft inside.(missing sweet and sour dipping sauce). Overall it’s a great place and best bang for your buck when you need some affordable food.
Fried rice really dry and no color is just white rice with vegs and egg nothing else, not fried just mixed. Chow mein no color, no seasoning, noodles taste like uncooked and soggy, garlic chicken again no color, beef and broccoli was ok. Didn’t like it and eill never buy food from here ever again.
My ex used to work down the street from this place and would bring home combination chow fun and their chicken salad and this place is our go-to for both. Hadn't ordered from here since the pandemic so my daughter and I decided to dine in. We added sweet and sour pork and potstickers to try something new. The chowfun lacked veggies, the sweet and sour pork was just not good, over battered. The potstickers were delicious!!! And the chicken salad was not as good as I remembered. Would come back for VEGGIE chow fun and potstickers, for sure!!
We lost our favorite Chinese Food Restaurant, so we tried this one. The pot stickers were big and beautiful. Best!! Loved Broccoli Beef, not overly cooked Broccoli and meat, tender and flavorful... thank you. Will try more dishes!!
The lunch specials have never been bad. My favorites are #8 Ming's Beef and #2 General's Chicken. The specials come with Spring Roll, Hot and Sour Soup, Fried Rice and Vegetable Chow Mein. The lady behind the counter has been friendly and helpful.
