About Shanghai Tokyo

Shanghai Tokyo is a restaurant located at 54 E Central St in Natick, Massachusetts, offering a menu that includes both Chinese and Japanese cuisine. They can be contacted at (508) 651-0818 or +1 508-651-0818.

Customer reviews for Shanghai Tokyo present a mixed picture. On the positive side, some diners have found the pricing for lunch sushi to be outstanding and the quality to be top-notch. The atmosphere has been described as cozy, with accommodating staff, and some customers have noted that the food was fresh and delicious.

However, other reviews express significant concerns. One customer who was hoping for an authentic Chinese food experience found the restaurant to be mediocre and would not recommend it for that. They believe that serving two cuisines might detract from the quality of each. While they found the sushi to be slightly better than the Chinese food, it still did not meet expectations.

Specific criticisms regarding the sushi include rice falling off and loose wrapping in the Alaskan Maki. The crab rangoons were described as okay but were served with an unusual, overly sweet white sauce instead of the typical sweet and sour sauce. Chinese dishes such as the Beef with Eggplant in Garlic Sauce were said to have a basic, possibly bottled sauce. The Szechuan Style Bean Curd in Spicy Sauce was not well-received and did not resemble mapo tofu as described. Even when elements of a dish were good, like the shrimp in the dried sauteed shrimp, other components, such as the dry, packing-peanut-like crispy rice, detracted from the overall experience. This reviewer concluded that the food seems tailored to an American palate and lacks authentic flavor, recommending other nearby restaurants for those seeking genuine Chinese cuisine.

In summary, Shanghai Tokyo appears to offer a range of Chinese and Japanese dishes. While it may appeal to some for its pricing and atmosphere, particularly for sushi, potential diners seeking authentic and high-quality Chinese food or exceptional sushi should consider the more critical reviews regarding flavor and preparation.

Unfortunately this restaurant has not impressed me and I would call it mediocre. As much as I don’t want to say it, I wouldn’t recommend it if you are wanting authentic Chinese food. I moved nearby and was hoping it was going to become a staple. I’ve been twice and both times were a let down. They serve 2 cuisines as the name implies instead of focusing on one and I think suffers from this. The Sushi is a little better than their Chinese food. The sushi is okay, but not great. I had the Alaskan Maki and the rice starting to fall off and it was not tightly wrapped. The crab rangoons were okay, but came with a sauce that was not good. It was not a sweet and sour which you typically get, but was a white sauce that was overly sweet with not much flavor. The Beef with Eggplant in Garlic Sauce had a basic sauce that tasted like it could have been from a bottle. The Szechuan Style Bean Curd in Spicy Sauce wasn’t very good. The waitress told me it was similar to mapo tofu (which I love) which it didn’t taste anything like. It had a really strange flavor that is hard to describe. The shrimp in the dried sauteed shrimp was good but not very spicy and the crispy rice it came on was interesting and had a texture similar to packing peanuts. It could have used a sauce or something else added to it because it was very dry. Overall, the food seems tailored to an American audience and wasn’t very flavorful. If you are wanting authentic Chinese food nearby I would recommend Shaanxi Gourmet or Sichuan Gourmet. If you want Sushi, it’s okay, but it wasn't the highest quality.

The owner and her daughter are very welcoming and hardworking. The food here is flavorful and fresh. The service was quick. The atmosphere was very pleasant will be recommending to my friends and family. Her daughter hogged the bathroom for an hour when I went however, besides that 10/10 experience. 🚽🔥
