For those in Fremont and the surrounding areas seeking a taste of genuine Shanghai flavors, Shanghai Noodle House appears to be a compelling option based on recent customer reviews. While the restaurant makes some adjustments to cater to local palates, the authenticity of the Shanghai dishes is a significant highlight. Let's delve into what makes Shanghai Noodle House a place worth considering for your next meal.
One reviewer noted that Shanghai Noodle House offers "authentic Shanghai food with some adjustments," specifically mentioning that it is "not as sweet as Shanghai local flavor." This suggests that while the restaurant stays true to the core essence of Shanghai cuisine, they might have slightly modified the sweetness levels to better suit the preferences of their local clientele. This approach can often make regional cuisines more accessible to a broader audience without sacrificing their fundamental character.
This same reviewer also shared some of their favorite dishes, providing valuable recommendations for those looking to explore the menu. These include:
- Spicy meat with noodles: This dish is a popular choice and likely features a savory and flavorful meat sauce with a noticeable kick of spice, served over a bed of noodles.
- Dumplings: Dumplings are a staple in Shanghai cuisine, and this positive mention suggests they are a noteworthy item at Shanghai Noodle House. The type of dumplings (e.g., pan-fried, steamed, soup dumplings) is not specified, but their inclusion as a favorite indicates their quality.
- Seasonal greens: Offering seasonal greens highlights the restaurant's potential use of fresh, locally available vegetables, providing a healthy and flavorful side dish.
- Pork ribs with rice cake: This classic Shanghainese dish typically features tender pork ribs braised in a rich sauce, served with chewy and slightly sweet rice cakes. Its inclusion as a favorite suggests it's a well-executed and satisfying option.
Another customer provided a more structured review, breaking down their experience into several categories and assigning scores. This offers a more detailed perspective on various aspects of Shanghai Noodle House:
- Bathroom: 3/5 (Somewhat clean and somewhat functional): This rating suggests that while the restroom facilities are adequate, there might be room for improvement in terms of cleanliness or functionality.
- Customer Service: 4.5/5 (Very friendly and gave us a lot of recommendations for what to eat. Also actually spoke Shanghainese): This is a significant positive point. The staff is described as very friendly and helpful, offering recommendations, which can be particularly valuable for those unfamiliar with Shanghai cuisine. The fact that they also speak Shanghainese adds to the authenticity of the experience and can create a more welcoming atmosphere for those who are familiar with the language.
- Ambiance: 4/5 (A bit dirty but that’s iconic and it was bustling. There were various Chinese newspaper clippings along the walls): The ambiance is described as "a bit dirty but that’s iconic and it was bustling." This suggests a lively and perhaps traditional setting, where the focus might be more on the food and the bustling atmosphere rather than pristine cleanliness. The presence of various Chinese newspaper clippings on the walls adds a touch of authenticity and cultural flavor to the dining environment. This description implies a casual and perhaps more traditional Chinese eatery rather than a modern, sleek restaurant.
- Food: 5/5 (It was authentic, it was bussin): This is the highest rating, indicating that the reviewer found the food to be exceptionally authentic and delicious ("bussin" is a colloquial term for very good). This strongly reinforces the earlier comment about the authenticity of the Shanghai cuisine offered at the restaurant.
- Wow: 0.5/1 (Shanghainese food was SERVED): The "Wow" factor, though not explicitly defined by the reviewer in terms of criteria, received a positive score, suggesting that Shanghai Noodle House successfully delivered on its promise of providing genuine Shanghainese food.
The reviewer also provided a "Total Score" calculation based on weighted values for each category: Bathroom (BR), Customer Service (CS), Ambiance (AM), Food, and Wow. The formula used was: Total Score = BR + CS + 2*AM + 5*FOOD + WOW, resulting in a total score of 8.60. The high weighting of the "Food" category (multiplied by 5) underscores its importance in the overall assessment of the restaurant.
Based on this detailed review, Shanghai Noodle House stands out for its authentic and delicious Shanghai cuisine, as well as its friendly and helpful customer service where staff even speak Shanghainese. The ambiance is described as bustling and somewhat traditional, with Chinese newspaper clippings adding to the cultural feel. While the cleanliness of the bathroom received a moderate score, the overall positive feedback, particularly regarding the food, suggests that Shanghai Noodle House is a place where the quality of the cuisine is the primary draw.

This hidden gem offers truly authentic Chinese cuisine at a fantastic price point. I adore this spot for its wonton soup, grilled meat buns, delicious noodles, comforting duck soup, and more. A must-visit for those craving genuine flavors without breaking the bank.
Not a very big place but just enough to enable parties of 5. The dishes are all served as family style so you should be prepared to share. The prices are really good compared to what you pay for around the bay. The family that runs the place are as nice as can be. We ordered a lot of food so I'll just touch on a couple of items that I really liked. The dried pork noodle was nice and flavorful. The beef noodle was not super flavorful but boy is it hearty, try to finish that even with help!! The soup dumplings were nice and fresh, most definitely my fav dish. You don't come away feeling heavy or bloated. All the food came out fast and hot, you would not be disappointed coming here.
It is located in a quiet corner in a small plaza. Everything is good except the Xiaolongbao doesn’t have soup. The staffs are friendly. Recommend.
