About Shanghai House
Shanghai House, located at 12821 SE 38th St, Bellevue, WA 98006, USA, stands out as a unique establishment within the Chinese Restaurant category, offering a compelling "fusion of Chinese and Korean cuisine." With phone numbers (425) 643-1663 and +1 425-643-1663, this restaurant positions itself as a destination for diners seeking a distinctive culinary experience, particularly for dishes that are considered "rare finds in the US."
The culinary offerings at Shanghai House are a significant draw, focusing on dishes that blend Chinese and Korean influences, alongside traditional Shanghai-style cuisine. Key highlights mentioned by customers include "TungSuYuk," described as "Northern Korea’s unique take on Sweet-and-Sour Beef," and "Jjajangmyeon," a "delightful noodle dish topped with a thick sauce of Chunjang, diced pork, and vegetables." These dishes are emphasized as being "absolutely worth seeking out" due to their rarity and authentic preparation. For those specifically seeking Shanghai-style dishes, the restaurant offers options such as "red-braised pork belly" and "egg yolk pumpkin," which have been praised as "pretty good." However, the menu also presents inconsistencies, as the traditional Shanghai soup "Yanduxian" has consistently disappointed a returning customer, being described as "just NOT right" and advised to "avoid ordering this." Other dishes like "Eight Treasure Duck" and some cold dishes were noted as meeting "the standard but were not amazing." Despite these variations, the overall sentiment for many dishes leans positive, particularly for the unique Chinese-Korean fusion items. This suggests that while not every dish may be a hit for every palate, the restaurant provides a valuable opportunity to experience a diverse and often unique range of flavors not commonly found elsewhere, enriching the local culinary diversity.
The environment of Shanghai House, while not explicitly detailed in terms of decor, can be inferred through customer sentiment. Described as a "hidden gem," this suggests an unassuming exterior that belies a rewarding interior. The positive reviews, highlighting "outstanding service" and "incredible food flavors," contribute to an implied pleasant dining atmosphere. While one review mentions "surprisingly low review ratings" elsewhere, their personal experience was "nothing short of exceptional," which speaks to a potentially understated or unpretentious setting that delivers beyond expectations. The restaurant's appeal as a destination for "anyone living in or near Seattle, or just visiting," further implies a comfortable and welcoming space that is suitable for a diverse clientele. Given the focus on unique dishes, the ambiance likely supports a relaxed and enjoyable meal, allowing diners to focus on the distinctive flavors being presented. The general tone of positive reviews suggests a clean and well-maintained establishment, even if specific decorative elements are not highlighted.
Service at Shanghai House is consistently praised, with one customer specifically highlighting it as "outstanding." This positive feedback suggests attentive, friendly, and efficient staff who contribute significantly to the dining experience. In an establishment offering less common dishes, knowledgeable staff who can explain menu items, as implied by the positive experience with "incredible food flavors" and the overall "exceptional" visit, would be particularly valuable. The ability of the staff to handle a "group of six people" ordering "many dishes" further suggests organized and capable service, even for larger parties. While a customer expressed a wish for staff to understand how "Yanduxian" should be cooked correctly, this is a specific culinary critique rather than a general complaint about service demeanor or efficiency. Overall, the service appears to be a strong point for Shanghai House, enhancing the perception of a welcoming and well-run establishment.
Several key features define Shanghai House and contribute to its unique appeal. Its primary distinguishing feature is the "delicious fusion of Chinese and Korean cuisine," offering a rare and exciting blend of flavors that sets it apart from more conventional Chinese restaurants. The presence of specific dishes like "TungSuYuk" and "Jjajangmyeon," which are "rare finds in the US," serves as a significant draw for adventurous eaters and those seeking authentic regional specialties. The restaurant's ability to provide traditional "Shanghai-style" dishes, despite some inconsistencies, contributes to the culinary diversity of the local dining scene. The highly praised "red-braised pork belly" and "egg yolk pumpkin" indicate areas of culinary strength. The "outstanding service" is another key feature, ensuring a pleasant and welcoming experience for patrons. The restaurant's ability to operate as a "hidden gem" suggests it offers a unique and rewarding experience for those who discover it, often exceeding expectations despite potentially lower online ratings elsewhere. This positions Shanghai House as a valuable addition to the Bellevue culinary landscape, particularly for those with an adventurous palate or a craving for authentic, less common Chinese-Korean dishes.
While specific promotional information for Shanghai House is not explicitly detailed in the provided customer reviews, a restaurant offering such unique and rare dishes often relies on word-of-mouth and the distinctiveness of its menu as its primary "promotion." However, it is common for restaurants, particularly those looking to increase their visibility or attract new customers, to engage in various promotional activities. These might include special tasting menus for new or unique dishes, occasional discounts for dine-in or takeout during off-peak hours, or loyalty programs for returning customers. Given its appeal to a specific culinary niche (Chinese-Korean fusion and rare Shanghai dishes), the restaurant might also participate in local food festivals or culinary events that highlight diverse Asian cuisines. Online presence, including social media and listings on food delivery platforms, could be used to announce limited-time offers or seasonal specials. For the most current and specific promotional information, prospective diners are encouraged to check Shanghai House's official website, their social media channels, or popular food delivery applications. The unique nature of its menu, however, already serves as a compelling reason for many to visit, providing a culinary experience that is hard to replicate elsewhere in the region.

Shanghai House is a hidden gem, offering a delicious fusion of Chinese and Korean cuisine. Their menu features traditional dishes like TungSuYuk, Northern Korea’s unique take on Sweet-and-Sour Beef, and Jjajangmyeon also spelled Jajangmyeon is a delightful noodle dish topped with a thick sauce of Chunjang, diced pork, and vegetables. These wonderful dishes are rare finds in the US, but are absolutely worth seeking out. Despite the surprisingly low review ratings, my experience was nothing short of exceptional—from the outstanding service to the incredible food flavors. It's possible that the traditional Chinese-Korean dishes might be unfamiliar to some. However, for anyone living in or near Seattle, or just visiting, Shanghai House is an absolute must-try! 🍜🌟
After not visiting for a long time, I came here again. Last time, I had to admit that I was pretty disappointed by the dish 'Yanduxian,' but after such a long time, I decided to give it another chance. Our group of six people ordered many dishes. I'd say this time it was better than I expected. Some of the dishes are pretty good, for example, the red-braised pork belly and the egg yolk pumpkin. Some of the dishes met the standard but were not amazing, such as the Eight Treasure Duck and some cold dishes. However, I was again disappointed by the 'Yanduxian.' It was just NOT right. Nothing was right about this soup, and please just avoid ordering this. Hopefully, the restaurant staff will see this review and ask me what would be the correct way of cooking it. Anyway, it's improving. There's already very little competition among Shanghai-style restaurants here, so at least it provides a destination to enrich the diversity.
Only Shanghai restaurant in Seattle area. Have many very shanghai dishes. But they moved to this much smaller place, so that it seems the options of dishes are less than before. I recommend to dine in, the dishes take-out is not as good as fresh cooked. Some dishes are pricey. But this is the only Shanghai restaurant, so we have no choice. Free Parking. Service is good. this restaurant has been remodeled so it’s better than soft-opening.
Food is really good chinese flavor. Good portion . Reasonable prices. But service need to improve alot . Too dry. Unfriendly. Inattentive. Too busy with other things. Or not want to do what should be done to make customers feel welcomed. Not check on customers if need anything. Despite the place was empty.
To be fair the food didn’t deserve a low rating, but the waitress lady was only nice when she tried to get us to order extra dishes. After we finished ordering, she acted as if we were a total bother. Would not recommend if you want to dine in a friendly environment
