About Shanghai Dumpling King
Shanghai Dumpling King is a Chinese restaurant situated at 720 14th St in San Francisco, California. As a member of the Chinese Restaurant category, it aims to offer a range of Chinese dishes, with a particular emphasis implied by its name. However, recent customer reviews present a somewhat polarized view of the dining experience at this location, highlighting both positive and negative aspects that potential local users should consider.
One reviewer shared a generally positive impression of their visit to Shanghai Dumpling King. They noted the "friendly staff" who were also described as "attentive and efficient," suggesting a welcoming and well-managed service environment. The reviewer found the food to be "generally on point" and the prices to be "reasonable," indicating a potentially good value proposition for diners. Interestingly, this customer mentioned preferring the other standard dishes over the Xiao Long Bao (XLB), or soup dumplings, despite the XLB being "well steamed with well done thin, chewy skin" and having "lots of meat filling." The reviewer did, however, describe the filling as having a "somewhat of the mystery meat consistency," which might be a point of concern for some diners.
Regarding the ambiance, this reviewer noted that there wasn't "much to speak of for decor" and described the interior as "overall somewhat run down." Despite this, they prioritized food quality and stated that they would return if they were "hankering for Chinese food," suggesting that the taste and price outweighed the lack of aesthetic appeal. Practical information about parking was also provided, with the reviewer mentioning that it is the "usual hit or miss street parking" in the area and can be "difficult to find."
In stark contrast, another reviewer expressed significant disappointment with their experience. This customer explicitly stated their preference for another location of what appears to be the same restaurant on Monterey and their disappointment that the 14th Street location did not meet their expectations. They went as far as to say "the food is horrible." This negative experience was based on a pickup order placed through Uber Eats, leading the reviewer to question if the food quality differs for in-house customers.
The specific issues highlighted in this negative review were "horribly burnt chicken" and onion pancakes that were described as "so dry and taste stale." The reviewer was so dissatisfied that they advised others to "save yourself some money and get better food even from chains like Panda Express" and even suggested that the food at chain boba places like Quickly's and Boba Guys was superior. This strong negative feedback raises serious concerns about the consistency and quality of some of the dishes offered at this location.
The significant disparity between these two reviews makes it challenging to form a definitive overall assessment of Shanghai Dumpling King on 14th Street. While one customer found the staff friendly, the prices reasonable, and the food generally good (albeit with reservations about the XLB filling and the decor), another experienced severely subpar food quality with burnt chicken and stale pancakes.
Based on the available information, there are no specific details provided about the environment of Shanghai Dumpling King beyond the one reviewer's description of the decor as unremarkable and the interior as somewhat run down. This suggests that the focus is likely more on the food and service rather than the aesthetic appeal of the dining space.
In terms of services, the first reviewer mentioned friendly, attentive, and efficient staff, indicating a positive service experience for dine-in customers. The second reviewer's experience was with a pickup order through Uber Eats, highlighting their availability on food delivery platforms. However, the drastically different food quality received through this service raises questions about consistency between dine-in and takeout/delivery orders.
The features of Shanghai Dumpling King, as implied by its name, likely include Shanghai-style dumplings, particularly Xiao Long Bao. However, one reviewer's preference for the standard dishes over the XLB suggests that their broader menu might also be noteworthy, although the second reviewer's negative experience casts doubt on the overall reliability of the food quality. The reasonable prices mentioned by one reviewer could be a potential draw for budget-conscious diners, but this would need to be weighed against the risk of inconsistent food quality highlighted by the other.
No promotional information is mentioned in either of the provided reviews. There are no details about special offers, discounts, or signature dishes being promoted. Potential customers would need to inquire directly with the restaurant to learn about any current promotions.
In conclusion, Shanghai Dumpling King on 14th Street in San Francisco presents a mixed picture based on recent customer reviews. While one diner reported friendly staff, reasonable prices, and generally good food (with a caveat about the XLB filling) in a somewhat basic setting, another experienced a significantly negative pickup order with burnt chicken and stale onion pancakes. Parking in the area is noted as potentially difficult. Local users considering Shanghai Dumpling King should be aware of these contrasting experiences and might want to proceed with caution, perhaps trying a dine-in experience to assess the current food quality and service for themselves. The discrepancy between the reviews, especially regarding food quality for pickup versus potentially dine-in, is a significant factor to consider.

Friendly staff, attentive and efficient. Food was generally on point, prices reasonable. I actually liked the other standard dishes over the XLB although it was well steamed (with well done thin, chewy skin) and lots of meat filling (although the filling was somewhat of the mystery meat consistency). Not much to speak of for decor and overall somewhat run down inside but food quality is more important to me so I would go back if hankering for Chinese food! Parking is the usual hit or miss street parking, can be difficult to find around that area.
i will start by saying i really like the location on monterey and thought it was convenient there was a closer location and i am very disappointed the food is horrible i ordered for pick up on uber eats and am wondering if it the food is the same for costumers that come in and order food they gave me the wrong rice horribly burnt chicken, onion pancakes were so dry and taste stale save yourself some money and get better food even from chains like panda express and id even go as far aa to say the food at chain boba places like quicklys and boba guys is better
All dishes we ordered were too salty. The host/server/owner was nice and offered to remake the cucumber but we used water to remove the excess salt instead. Prices were reasonable. The atmosphere was casual.
Some of the freshest dumplings around. If I lived closer I would be there once a week. The lamb dumplings and dan dan noodles were phenomenal. Very welcoming. Quick and excellent service. One of my favorite places while visiting San Francisco.
Amazing food, fresh and delicious! Service was incredibly fast, even with a crowded group. Restaurant was nice and clean. Food came out within minutes of ordering. Affordable and quite cheap for the portion size, excellent bang for your buck. 1000/10! Would come again!
